editWiki Loves Monuments in Canada
editCanada participated for the second time in the international photography contest Wiki Loves Monuments. During this contest 2,500 pictures of Canadian historical heritage sites has been uploaded to Commons. The pictures have been judged by a national jury who have submitted the ten best pictures to an international jury. However the three photographers in Canada who obtained the highest score won Canadian prizes: $500, $250 and $100 at the online store Camtec photo, official sponsor of Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in Canada. For the first time a Canadian picture is selected to be among the ten best pictures submitted under this competition.

Free culture and education
editOn February 13th, 2013, Olier Raby gave a talk on Culture libre et éducation (Free culture and education). In front of 30 people, he spoke of Wikipedia, Canada's copyright laws and a new collection, Sciences de la nature, from Les Classiques des sciences sociales, a free library of French-speaking authors, mainly in humanities (if you speak French, see [1], with pictures of Olier and Simon Villeneuve). To help start the new collection, he translated from English to French On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies (1920 edition) (see De l'électrodynamique des corps en mouvement (On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies)).
The same day, Olier Raby was in classroom. Since Simon Villeneuve is a physics teacher, Olier spoke of Albert Einstein and why he is so important in today's physics. This was done while looking at Albert Einstein in the French Wikipedia. The next day, in front of another classroom, Olier wrote a draft in the French Wikipedia, explaining how to proceed in order to prevent deletion (see NGC 49 as saved on February 14). He took an hour to explain all this, since Simon Villeneuve's students had not edit before. The students worked in pairs, and both Olier and Simon helped them carry out the writing of new articles.

Presentation at the CBC tour (Canadian Science Writers' Association)
editAs part of the conference of the Association of Quebec science communicators on Saturday, June 8, 2013, Wikimedia Canada was invited to make a one-hour presentation on Wikimedia science journalists.
- Alan Walker, president of Wikimedia Canada, opened the presentation and explains what the Wikimedia Foundation and the Canadian chapter.
- Benoit Rochon, Project Wikimedia Canada, covers all 12 Wikimedia projects online.
- Nathalie Casemajor, professor at the Université du Québec en Outaouais, has some field projects such as Project Phoebus.
- Cantons-de-l'Est ends the presentation with a short training science journalists so that they too can contribute to Wikipedia.
Then we went to a cocktail party where participants could continue discussions on free licenses, multi-input, etc. They could also mean that they had enjoyed the presentation and we have kept in touch with many of them. Some were registered there.
Other activities not funded by WMF
editSeveral other activities were conducted by Wikimedia Canada in 2013, and they have not been funded by the Wikimedia Foundation.
- National Contribution month where 14 workshops were organised by wikipedians all around Canada.
- International Contribution Month in the Francophonie coordiated by Wikimedia Canada, 29 workshops organised by wikipedians in Belgium, Burkina Faso, Canada, France, Switzerland and Tunisia.
- Mile End contribution day writing articles about Mile End, Montreal.
- Inter Universities Contribution Day with students of the Faculty of Physics of the Universities of Montreal, Sherbrooke and Quebec City.
- Wikipetia Atikamekw Project with High School students in Manawan, Quebec to learn and write Wikipedia in Atikamekw language.
Lessons learned
edit- What worked well?
- WLM 2013 in Canada was easy to organise because it's our second year, so there was only few things to prepare, and there we go: largest photo competition in the world! Copyleft day went well even if not a lot of people showed up ; we had the chance to meet people in order to organise more open projects. Presentation at the CBC tour (Canadian Science Writers' Association) was a really great project since this association is for scientific journalists; this conference is a big thing! A lot of attendees were very interested to learn how to write Wikipedia, especially with the GLAM projects like Commons:Projet Phoebus.
- What didn't work?
- WLM 2013 in Canada; this is probably the last time we give prizes. First, winners didn't know there was prizes even if it was announce everywhere. Second, it's complicated to send things over the regular mail from a province to another, and very expensive. Copyleft day: for future years we should take care of doing more publicity to bring people together.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- To not skimp on the announcements and advertising. I think since Wikipedia Takes Montreal where 300 people subscribe (and there was only 90 places max in the room!!), I'm affraid of announcements! Now, I'm not sure what is worst: refusing some people because we are full, or organise something where there is only 5 or 6 persons.

- Get more people to contribute in Wikimedia projects: students, teachers, scientists, librarians, archivists and more widely citizens. Also, our goal was to develop links between Wikimedia Canada and Canadian associations / institutions.
- Attract new contributors and increase the quality of content on Wikimedia projects.

- Improve scientific articles in French.
- Bring more scientists to work on Wikipedia.
- Support Wikipedia Education Program.
- Increase the number of pictures about Canada on Commons to be used on all Wikimedia projects.

- Promote awareness of the Wikimedia Canada chapter and its commitment in support of French language and culture.
- Increase visibility of Wikimedia projects and Wikimedia Canada through the use of medias and social networks.

- Continue progress towards Charity status in Canada by maintaining excellent records and compliance with all government regulations.
- Attract new contributors and increase the quality of content on Wikimedia projects.

- Our projects have sensitized students through School and university projects, but also with photographers Wiki Loves Monuments and several science journalists, often at retirement. In some cases, people have created accounts in Wikipedia and have continued to contribute, not only in highly specialized scientific articles, but also to illustrate articles.
- Many projects are directly derived from our 2013 activities, for example, Wikimedia Canada has established several links like Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ (National Library and Archives of Quebec)), Association des communicateurs scientifiques du Québec (ACS (Association of Science Communicators of Quebec)), Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS (Francophone Association for knowledge)), Lionel-Groulx Foundation, etc.
