The following conference was brought to our attention by Wikimedia UK as a speaker from Cancer Research UK will be presenting on the organisations experience with a Wikimedian in Residence.
SCI:COM 2015 is a new, all-island science communications conference. An exciting day of talks, panel discussions, and networking, SCI:COM 2015 will be an unmissable event for anyone interested in the communication of science to any audience, whether you are a researcher, event organiser, teacher, journalist, or work behind the scenes in STEM administration.
The Wikimedia Ireland Community have been in discussions with several institutions about a Wikimedian in Residence program. Attending this conference would give us the opportunity to capitalize on the success in the UK and continue our outreach efforts. We propose to have two community members attend the conference. Two members have volunteered: Shannon and Eugene, to attend the event and speak on the behalf of the group.
Goal and expected impact edit
As a result of our members attending the conference, the group will gain further insight into the Wikimedian in Residence program as it is run in the UK and the event is an opportunity to network with Irish organizations who may be inclined to consider a Wikimedian in Residence position in Ireland. A secondary objective is to promote the group within the local the science community.
Budget breakdown edit
- Travel (round trip train from Dublin to Athlone): EUR 30 per person x 2 = EUR 60
- Accommodation: EUR 84 for one night
- Conference Tickets: EUR 95 per person x 2 = 190
As the conference begins at 9am accommodation is required the night before to ensure we arrive on time.
