Participant connections edit

We met members of the Irish Science Communications community. Our specific aim was promote the Wikipedian in Residence program in Ireland. To that end, we met with a presenter from the UK who spoke about his experience with a Wikimedian in Residence. During the Q&A segment of his talk we made ourselves known to the audience and that we would be available to discuss the program after the talk. We were approached by several people interested in the program and how it could be implemented in Ireland. We are currently following up with those initial contacts.

Mr. Scowcroft, the speaker from Cancer Research UK, was a treasure trove of information about how the Wikimedian in Residence program worked in his organisation. As he was not a member of the Wikimedia community before the Wikimedian in Residence came to his organisation he was able to provide insight to approaches that we might take with organisations here in Ireland. We have generally been focusing on cultural and government institutes. After speaking with Mr. Scowcroft we are now exploring approaching other non-profit organisations about the Wikimedian in Residence program.

Outcome edit

Option 2: Learning Pattern: What is one useful learning pattern you can share with the Wikimedia movement?
Add a link to a learning pattern - either a new pattern you created with insights from your participation, or an existing pattern to which you added your endorsement and some significant new "considerations" or “examples” from your experience.
I added an endorsement on the Grants:Learning patterns/Towards a Successful GLAM Partnership page. The presenter we spoke to worked closely with their Wikimedian in Residence. Due to that he was able to give us insight into how to approach institutes in Ireland that might be interested in the program.

Finances edit

  • Travel (Round trip train from Dublin to Athlone) for two participants: EUR 78.80
  • Accommodation: EUR 69.00 for one night
  • Conference Tickets for two participants: EUR 190
  • Total Spent: EUR 337.80

Amount left over edit

EUR 334 was allocated for this grant, we went over budget by EUR 3.80 due to the train tickets being slightly more expensive than budgeted.

Anything else edit

The conference was well worth attending as we made several contacts. We plan on applying to run a workshop at the 2016 conference.
