My name is Shani Evenstein and I am an active Wikipedian & Wikimedian. The majority of my volunteer work revolves around GLAM-Wiki & EDU-Wiki outreach. In the past 2 years, I have focused mostly on EDU-Wiki, leading various educational initiative & projects in Israel. I have been giving lectures, as well as workshops and training to students of all ages (both k-12 & higher education), as well as teachers and faculty members, helping them implementing Wikipedia as a teaching tool. Besides being an active member of the Wikipedia Education Program, I'm also a member of the EDU-Wiki Collab, which focuses on mentoring other wikipedians in running education programs, curating edu-wiki related info and working on global edu-wiki initiatives together.
One of the most important (and impactful) projects I have been working on in the past few years has been designing & leading the first academic elective course focused on contributing to Wikipedia, called Wiki-Med, at Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University. The course opened in 2013 and this year completed its 3rd iteration. So far my students have written about 170 articles on medical-related issues, which have gained over million views. Some of these articles are translations, as part of an ongoing collaboration with WikiProject Medicine. It is important to note that though I work at Sackler (curriculum development & E-learning strategies at the American Med program), this course is outside the scope of my official role. The course is offered to students of the Israeli Med program at Sackler and I run it in my capacity as a volunteer (i.e. not paid for it).
Drawing from the academic research around Wiki-Med and the practical experience of using a semester-long elective course that focuses on Wikipedia as an effective teaching model, I submitted a proposal for an oral presentation at the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE). My proposal has been accepted. I will be speaking about "Wikipedia as a Teaching and Learning Tool in Medical Education", and will be presenting Wiki-Med from an academic & educational point of view to an audience of medical educators, curriculum developers and researchers.
Goal and expected impact edit
My goal in this presentation is to expose an important target audience of medical educators & curriculum developers from various medical schools around the world to the idea of using Wikipedia as a teaching tool specifically in scientific disciplines. As a result of my presentation, the audience will become aware of various teaching models, focusing on an elective, semester-long course model, as well as relevant Wiki Projects, such as Wikiproject Med. Ideally, some participants will be interested in implementing similar models in their institutions, in which case I will be able to support them online, as well as connect them with wiki-educators from around the world that can support their efforts locally.

I will book the flight and hotel myself. The expenses for attending this conference are high and it will be helpful to get the flight & registration fees in advance (as I have to pay for it now). The rest could be reimbursed after attending and completing the report.

Support I'm glad to see this opportunity for Shani to be able to share her experience with a relevant global audience. The work that she did with her WikiMed course at Tel Aviv University is a shining example in the education part of the Wikimedia Movement. It would be great for her to be able to reach new a new audience of stakeholders who would not only learn about her work but hopefully be inspired to try something similar in their own classrooms and universities. As an active member of the Wikipedia Education Collaborative, Shani is also a great resource for interested people at the conference to get involved with peer mentors who serve as a community of practice and resource for new education programs and activities.
