Proposed participation edit

We (Dr. Patricia Brooks and Ms. Christina Shane-Simpson) have been invited to lead a workshop titled "Implementing the APS Wikipedia Initiative in General Education Coursework" at the Teaching Institute of the Association for Psychological Science. The Teaching Institute, co-sponsored by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (American Psychological Association, Division 2), is one of the largest teaching conferences in the field of psychology and is attended by hundreds of psychology instructors. As Wikipedia educators who teach with Wikipedia in our own classes, we will provide training, support, and Wiki Education Foundation resources to encourage instructors to introduce students to Wikipedia editing in introductory-level undergraduate classes. In conjunction with Wikipedia's Year of Science, we will also be promoting the PSYCH+Feminism initiative to improve the number and quality of psychology articles about prominent women in psychology.

The 2016 APS conference will be held May 26-29 in Chicago, IL. The proposed travel grant would cover travel expenses for the two workshop organizers/presenters to travel roundtrip from New York City to Chicago.

Goal and expected impact edit

As teacher-scholars who are active on Wikipedia, our goals for the workshop are to:

  • Identify opportunities for collaboration with other instructors who are teaching with Wikipedia;
  • Inform psychologists about the Year of Science initiative and promote PSYCH+Feminism;
  • Develop ideas for measuring/quantifying the impact of Wikipedia editing assignments for undergraduate students;
  • Inform graduate students and faculty in psychology about the APS Wikipedia Initiative[1];
  • Encourage people with expertise in the field to contribute to Wikipedia and to involve their students in collaborative editing.

As part of the APS-STP Teaching Institute, we anticipate that 50-75 people will attend the workshop. We hope to enlist 10 new instructors who will involve their students in the PSYCH+Feminism initiative in their Fall 2016 psychology courses and foster their involvement with the Wiki Education Foundation. Dr. Brooks has been named a Digital Fellow in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the College of Staten Island and a Fellow of the Futures Initiative at The Graduate Center to develop and promote PSYCH+Feminism at City University of New York. She has been working with Michael Mandiberg, co-founder of Art+Feminism, and the Wiki Education Foundation to develop and disseminate instructor materials.

Budget breakdown edit

  • Travel (round trip airfare from New York City to Chicago, IL): USD 150 x 2 people
  • Accommodation: USD 200 per night x 4 nights = USD 800
  • Per diem food: USD 50 x 4 days x 2 people = USD 400

The conference hotel rate is $200 per night/double occupancy. It is important for us to be at the conference hotel to facilitate meetings.

Total cost = $1500

Note that the Association for Psychological Science is covering the costs of our conference registration fees as we are participating in the conference as part of the invited program.
