Proposed participation

edit

My proposed talk at the SeaGL conference is entirely based on the Works I did with Jeff Green, Legoktm and various others staff and volunteers of Wikimedia Foundation for the Google Summer of Code 2014. The project was to efficiently handle email bounces with VERP and my talk at Seattle is a demo and explanation of the same on a generic and Wikimedia basis. I hope this would fetch us more feedback and assessment from various System Operations and Security engineers ( if present there ), and the users response on the same. I will try to get my mentors too to the same, if they are free and that would be great chance to meet and work with them. I hope many other Wikimedians too will be there for the same, and hope to have a great experience after missing Wikimania.

Goal and expected impact

edit

My talk can help various web-project owners ( not necessarily wiki projects ) understand the need to check on the bounce emails they receive and implement the VERP technology to handle them effectively. For those who already have used VERP, I will be able to introduce our own secure version of VERP we use, with no extra storage requirement which came out through various security and integrity review from various Wikimedia staff and volunteers. In effect, they might have some needed recommendations for us, help us in our system or in a wider motive, help make the email system clutter-free. To add, my article on "How to handle email bounces with VERP" got published by Open Source For You, this September issue - which gives me the energy to give the talk on the same.

Budget breakdown

edit
  • Travel (round trip airfare from Cochin( COK ) to Seattle (SEA) ): USD 1290
  • Accommodation ( SeaGL will provide ? ): USD 80 per night x 3 nights = USD 240 - I am not aware about the economic rates there.

As a Google Summer of Code Intern, I think I will be able to get Google sponsor my travel partially ( $ 500 ), which saves a lot. I am expecting SeaGL to take some expenses for Accommodation considering my travel as a speaker. I can confirm that in a few days.

Other instructions

edit

If you are able to find out cheaper air travel less than USD 1300, I would be happy to have you book the ticket, but otherwise, I can book on my own on reception of the Scholarship amount.

Endorsements

  • I just got confirmation of Google, they will sponsor up to $500 USD from 01tonythomas trip to this conference. For what is worth, I think Tony deserves to speak at this conference. He has performed very well as a GSoC student, and his participation with a Wikimedia topic in a non-Wikimedia technical event just fits in our outreach strategy. It is very good to see a GSoC participant so enthusiastic about his project, willing to keep promoting it after the internship period (you would assume this to be normal, but in reality it is not).--Qgil-WMF (talk) 09:13, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
