Wikimedia España is a Spanish non-profit organization, recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation as Wikimedia chapter in Spain. It was officially approved by the Wikimedia Foundation on February 7, 2011 and the same month was registered in the National Registry of Associations of the Ministry of Interior. In May 2011 an agreement was signed with the Valladolid City Council through which the association's headquarters would be located in a municipal agency.

2015 was a key year; in addition to attending the Princess of Asturias Awards Ceremony, where Wikipedia got the International Cooperation award, and which had an important impact on Spanish society, the activities and projects we carried out increased substantially. Due to this, we applied for the first time for a simple annual grant for 2016; it included the hiring of our first employee, a Programme Coordinator. Thanks to this, it was possible to manage the growing demand for activities and projects throughout the country, achieving good results in the number of activities, improved articles, obtained images or volunteers involved.

However, we detected a problem: our achievements and everything related to Wikipedia were not known, both in society and within the Wikimedia movement. This led us to request a second employee in the simple annual grant for 2017, a Communications Manager. The results obtained in the first months of her work confirm us the need to not only continue her work, but increase the number of working hours. Here we find why the budget for 2018 has been increased from 70,803.9 EUR to 96,957.36 EUR. The budget for programm expenses has been increased in 1650 EUR (25,200 EUR in 2017 vs. 26,850 EUR in 2018). The main rising is due only to staff and operation expenses. Last year the second employee was hired in July and only for 4 hours per day. For 2018, the same person will be working the whole year and 8 hours.

This growth, in order to continue in an organized and easily manageable way, requires prior planning. For that reason, we have started an internal process to define our strategy for the coming years, specifically for the period 2019-2021. This process will last several months and, under the direction of the board, will involve all members of the chapter. We have defined three parts in this process: state of the chapter, what we want to achieve, and how we want to do it.

The first step took place in the conference that wikimedia Spain held in Murcia in mid-September. There, the members attending worked on a SWOT analysis to define the current situation. This will be accompanied by an online survey, for all members, with the same objective: to collect information about the state of WMES. In addition, in January we will hold a meeting, during a weekend: the staff, members of the board and members, to process all the information obtained from the SWOT and the survey. The goal is that in Spring we will have clear what we want to achieve in the coming years and how, and to approve the strategy in Summer. Also, we are undergoing a financial / governance review process with Winifred Olliff and James in 2018.

Diversity and geographical reach

Description

On of our long-term objetives is to work so that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects are more diverse, both in terms of content and community participation. We all know the problems that Wikipedia currently faces, for example in terms of gender gap: less content about women and fewer women contributors. The same could be applied to other aspects related to cultural gap, with contents centered in Europe and North America, facing shortage of content about Africa, Asia or anything that it's not part of the Western World. In Spain, contents are available in Spanish but not always in the other 8 languages spoken within the country.

In these last years we have been working, increasingly, on these issues. An example of our work are the results for 2017; so far we have organized 24 editing activities, face-to-face or online, and 14 of them have been focused on gender or sexual identity, which is almost 60% of the total. More than tackling these events as single activities we think about them as parts of campaigns: March 8th Women's Day (different edit-a-thons in several places hosted by different institutions), celebrations of the Day for Women Writers in October or Women and Young Girls in Science Day in February. Our goals for 2018 focus on giving even more importance to this kind of activities, having seen the good results and outcomes they bring to the chapter and the free knowledge movement. We plan to organize at least 8 editing events focused on women, with the aim of increasing content about women in our projects and engaging with women to encourage them take an active role within our community. We usually work with specialized institutions or organizations, which in addition to advising us on what articles work, collaborate with the diffusion of the event and attend as participants. For 2018, and through our Communications and Engagement Manager, we also plan to start working with other organizations focusing on gender equity from the civil society and technical backgrounds.

Our geographical distribution is both a challenge and a strength in WMES. The distances within the country, and therefore the dispersion of the members, can sometimes limit their displacement and participation. However, the existence of members throughout most of the country, belonging to several Wikipedia communities, offers us the opportunity to work in different languages and with different local communities. In that way, in the last two years we have organized an edition event whose focus is the translation of local content between different Wikipedias called Intercultur. Our purpose is to organize a new edition of Intercultur with the participation, once again, of different local communities and other groups like Basque Wikimedians User Group and Amical Wikimedia. As a new approach we plan to expand this activity to the two communities of Wikipedia in Portugal: Mirandese and Portuguese. An example of the geographical distribution of the 2017 Wikimedia Spain activities could be seen on this map (updated in mid September.

During the last Wikimedia Conference, the idea of working together with several Wikimedia groups from Western Europe arose; as a first step we talked about holding a meeting in Porto in 2018, where we present and discuss ideas and projects to collaborate together. One of the central ideas that has been discussed, on which to work, is the linguistic diversity, how to manage it and how to help the smaller communities to promote the different Wikipedias.

Objectives
  • We want to achieve more gender-balanced Spanish community.
  • Achieving a more gender-balanced content on Wikipedia by increasing the content about women on Wikipedia.
  • Increase the content about Spanish cultures, geography, history and other fields of knowledge on Wikimedia projects.
Metrics
  • Through edit-a-thons, training sessions and other activities, we want to engage 250 women (from 97 in 2016 and 104, until now, in 2017, in edition events). At this moment, 35 women (23%) are part of the chapter: we aim to reach 50 women within our membership.
  • 400 articles about women improved and 50 created as a result of our Diversity Program.
  • 1,350 articles improved or created as a result of our Diversity Program (400 of them in local languages other than Spanish). We also plan to host events in at least 8 different provinces to encourage a wider geographical reach.
Assigned to

Communications & Engagement Manager role is fully linked to this program, with 25% of her time assigned to promote a spread the impact of our diversity activities within Spanish society and improving engagement and retention of new users joining the movement from new communities. Programme Manager is linked with 25% of his time dedicated to start contacts, hold meetings with institutions and organizations and planning of activities.

GLAM

Description

Working with GLAMs in Spain is not always easy due to, for example, the little use that cultural institutions make of free licenses or the lack of knowledge about the functioning of Wikimedia projects. However, for years we have been working to reverse this situation. After several attempts, in 2015 we managed to start a project of Wikipedian in Residence in three state museums (National Archaeological Museum, Museum of Romanticism and Costume Museum). The management was not easy since the museums required that there was an agreement with the Ministry to be able to carry it out. Therefore, this agreement was drafted and signed by us and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, which facilitated collaborating and organizing activities with the entire network of state museums. The agreement has been renewed in 2017 and it allows to continue the work with state museums.

The GLAMing Madrid project was a success, being held talks, workshops, editathon, online challenge and uploading pictures to Wikimedia Commons. Last year other museum was added (González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts of Valencia) and our objective for 2018 is to continue the existing collaborations and to start working with 2 more museums (Sorolla Museum and National Museum of Sculpture). These collaborations are usually translated into content creation, hosting workshops and editathons, but also in the uploading to Commons of images of their collections under free license.

In addition to state museums, Wikimedia Spain works with other local museums and libraries. These collaboration allows us to run edit-a-thons and engage experts and enthusiasts of different topics not well covered on Wikipedia.

In the previous years we have worked woth several GLAM institutions but in some cases we did not carry on the collaboration. One of the most important goals should be not to lost the contact and organizing at least one activity per year with them. For Wikimedia Spain, and also according to the Diversity programm, is more interesting to do different activities in different institutions in several cities and regions instead of doing a lot of activities always in the same institution / city to let people all around the country to participate.

Objectives
  • Carrying on collaboration with GLAMs partners we worked in the past, and starting new collaborations.
  • Achievement of free materials by involving cultural institutions in the development of quality content.
  • Increase the amount of articles related to the cultural heritage of Spain curated by GLAM institutions.
Metrics
  • Involving 6 institutions we worked with in different activities, and starting at least 2 new collaborations with new GLAM partners.
  • We want that other GLAM release at least 2,000 files.
  • At least 150 articles created thanks to GLAM activities.
Assigned to

Communications & Engagement Manager dedicates 20% of her time to design and promote GLAM campaigns. She also attends institutional events and conferences to represent WMES. Programme Manager dedicates 25% of his time to start contacts, hold meetings with institutions, planning of activities and projects and attending institutional and related events.

Media content

Description

The media acquisition is a strength of Wikimedia Spain since several years ago. Actually we can not understand Wikimedia Spain without this programm. The first big activity we had was Wiki Loves Monuments and it allowed us to learn a lot and create a model that was useful for other contest. In addition, the coverage of events (sport, concerts and other) is growing every year, involving WMES members and other volunteers.

The main goal of this program is to empower photographer and creative communities in Spain, in order to increase the quantity and quality of files, mainly images, about Spain in Wikimedia Commons and help spread this content in other Wikimedia projects. Activities under this program include holding national photographic contests (Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Folk), local photographic events such as Wiki Takes Your City, and funding for events coverage or meetups with creative communities.

The participants of these activities have taken 22,919 (Oct, 24th 2017) pictures, with 5,572 uses and 2,003 distinct images used until now. In 2018, we will move one step closer to our goal by obtaining 25,000 new uploaded files, 2,500 of them used in Wikimedia projects. Along with the photographic equipment purchased last year, for 2018 we plan to add a softbox that, for example, would improve the portraits of members of the Spanish Congress. One of the projects, None Spanish municipality without a picture, will be achieved sooner or later in 2018-2019, so we are already working on new goals that would motivate our community, for example the documentation of all abandoned villages in Spain.

Objectives
  • Increasing the quantity of photographic content from Spain on Wikimedia Commons
  • Involving new photographers into Wikimedia Commons
  • Improving the quality of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects articles / pages thanks to the use of media
Metrics
  • At least 25,000 files uploaded to Wikimedia Commons
  • Participation of at least 250 new users in activities of this programm
  • At least 2,500 distinct images used from this program on Wikimedia pages.
Assigned to

Communications & Engagement Manager dedicates 20% of her time to help give visibility to this program, both in social networks and media. She also gets in charge of engaging with new communities through specific events and prospections. Programme Manager dedicates 20% of his time to planify the different projects and events, contacts with organizations and coordinate volunteers involved.

Education and learning

Description

Wikimedia Spain has been working on education since the founding of the association, and also when it was not founded Educational institutions such as schools, universities and libraries at those institutions play an important role in our work, intensifying year by year. Wikipedia is key to Education, and education is key to expand the use and to improve the quality of Wikipedia. The use of Wikipedia is generalized but there are still many professors and students who are unaware of its functioning or who ignore the benefits of working with Wikipedia in the classroom. That is why we consider it important to continue and strengthen this work. Our collaboration with educational institutions date back to 2012 when we started a project with the University of Cádiz. Since then, each year the quantity of institutions we collaborate with has increased; 2 more in 2013, 2 in 2014, 4 in 2015, 3 in 2016 and 1 in 2017, to a total of 13.

This is actually a reactive approach. As a chapter, we focus on suporting professors and teachers who want to use Wikipedia at the classroom or who ask for outreach activities such as workshops and talks. In the second case, some of these professors want after that to develop a new project on Wikipedia. Without the support of wikipedians they end up having a lot of problems functioning on Wikipedia (mainly Spanish, English or Catalan Wikipedia) and the projects developed usually fail. Including this kind of program now will allow us to expand it in the future, after having get experience managing these projects.

The forms of collaboration are different in each case. The educational system in Spain allows professors to adapt the class to their objectives. Some examples are translation of content, creation of animations or writing Wikipedia articles or news for Wikinews. The results, for example for 2017, have been, so far, 166 students, 220 articles and more than two million bytes added.

The tasks are, generally, an introduction to Wikipedia (or other Wikimedia projects like Wikimedia Commons or Wikinews), a workshop, the creation of a coordination page on Wikipedia, and the supervision of the students' work. At the end of the projects, volunteers check the work done. The management of these projects is usually through a volunteer and a professor, with the support of the rest of the chapter when necessary. Along with these larger collaborations, other educational or training institutions ask us for a talk or a workshop, small sessions that in previous occasions have been the beginning of such projects. The role of the staff in that project is to support the volunters when necessary or to help directly when there is no volunteer available for that university/city/week.

So our goal for 2018 is continue this work. In addition to content and results, it is also essential that these projects be known so that more institutions and people in the educational field know the benefits of these collaborations. We know that the retention of users is very low in these kind of projects, but in 2017 one student who participated some years before has become a volunteer at his university and other is attending different events and contribute to the media program.

Objectives
  • Carrying the collaboration with the professors we worked in the previous years.
  • One of the objectives is that the educational programm provides articles to Wikimedia projects and do not provoque problems with the community.
  • One of the objectives is to get new contributors that continue editing.
Metrics
  • Collaboration in 15 different projects related to education.
  • At least 300 pages edited / created that keep on the Wikimedia projects after the completion of the educational project.
  • At least 2 participants who continue the following year (this is between 1–2% of retention)
Assigned to
  • This is a program supported mainly by volunteers, coordinated by the board and the Programme Manager.
  • Communications & Engagement Manger dedicates 15% of her time to this program, focusing on supporting Program Coordinator and volunteers communicate the education related activities they organize. Programme Manager dedicates 15% of his time to start contacts, hold meetings, planning the activities and attend sessions; these projects are regularly mentored by volunteers but in some cases they can´t manage them, so he is responsible for that.

Staff and contractors edit

Please describe any changes to your staffing plan for the upcoming funding period. These should include increases in staff or contractor hours, new staff positions, or staff positions you are removing. Include your rationale for any staffing changes here.

Following the incorporation of a part-time employee taking care of communications in July 2017, the staff team will be consisted of two roles in 2018: A Program Manager and a Communications & Engagement Manager. The major change within staffing plan for this funding period is that both of them should be full-time positions. Having reviewed and baring in mind:

1. Communications strategy and the amount of derivative tasks or actions,

2. The number of activities beign organised across the country by membership and how helpful is for them to get direct support on communications to help spread their impact and to comply with visual identity and key strategic messages,

3. Taking into consideration our objetive to engage with wider and newer audiences from now on and the relation this has to our main programs, a conversion to full-time and renaming the position to Communications and Engagement Manager is planned.

The performance of Communications Manager so far is good: In this first four months, amongst other achievements, she has been able to:

  • Design a new visual identity and communications materials for Wikimedia Spain,
  • Represent Wikimedia Spain in regional, national and international conferences such as “Gender and Cultural Management and Politics” (Diputación de Cádiz) or the “European Commons Assembly” (Medialab-Prado),
  • Launch a monthly Newsletter to keep informed membership, partners and other people interested in the free knowledge movement about our activities and impact,
  • Boost our social media accounts and work closely with partners to build corporate campaigns such as #DíaDeLasEscritoras, in collaboration with the National Library of Spain, to engage with women editors and improve the content about women writers in Wikipedia. With this campaign we have obtained impressions of +40,000 or interactions of +200 for a single tweet (this overcomes by far the metrics we used to have in the past),
  • Media coverage and interviews are also increasing. Specially with regards to giving visibility to activities we have been working on for long, but we were not able to communicate; such those related to address gender-gap in the Wikimedia projects. So far we have had 3 articles in national digital newspapers and 1 radio interview about this specific topic, which adds to the usual media relationship management we used to do for general information about the chapter or the Wikimedia Projects.

The staff team is now more focused and aligned with mid/long-term strategy development. Program Manager and Communications & Engagement Manager work closely and in cooperation with Board and membership, both for operational or day-to-day activities and for strategic planning. Given the changes over the past few years, we envisage a period of consolidation for these two positions within the organization. We hope to be able to grow the programs team in the coming years.

Wikimedia Spain is committed to staff development, encouraging staff to look for opportunities to develop their skills, experience and networks which include attendance at seminars, conferences, training courses and other events.

Detailed job descriptions for our staff can be found here.

For each new staff or contractor position, please use the template provided to add information about each new staff or contractor you are planning for the upcoming funding period (or to describe significant increases in hours or changes in job descriptions for existing staff). You are not required to provide this information for existing staff where no changes are required.

Diversity and geographical reach

The diversity and geographic reach program is structured around three main axes: gender gap, linguistic diversity and content diversity. All three are key pieces in our goals to promote diversity in Wikipedia and its sister projects. The reduction of the gender gap plays a leading role in this program. As an example, we organized 23 edition events in these first six months (both online and offline) and 12 were focused on content about women, that is, 52%. These events have been organized mainly around two campaigns: the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 22) and the International Women's Day (March 8).

Thus, to celebrate the Day of Women and Girls in Science, four events were organized: two online and two face-to-face. In the first two were edited articles on women scientists, one in Spanish and the other in Galician. The two face-to-face events were, on the one hand, at the University of Granada, where for example the article about the activist who promoted the celebration of that day, Nisreen El-Hashemite, was created for the first time, and on the other hand at the Official School of Doctors and Graduates in Philosophy and Letters, in collaboration with its archeology section, where articles about women archaeologists were edited.

Around the International Women's Day, 6 events were organized, one of them online and the rest in person. In previous years, the Art+Feminism editathon was organized in Valencia but this year, due to problems finding a space to celebrate it, it was decided to promote it online, with great success as well, and in which articles were edited in both Spanish and Catalan. For the second consecutive year, we carried out the Women and Archeology initiative, with two different events: on the one hand, at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, and on the other hand at the Prehistory Museum of Valencia, in collaboration with Amical Wikimedia and the University of Valencia.

More women on Wikipedia exhibition

An event to highlight was the the editathon about Canarian scientists that took place at the Elder Museum, a new collaboration, in which a large number of high school students participated. In addition, it coincided with the Hack for Good event, where we offered a talk and in which we proposed that they work on a tool to find out the gender gap in the Wikipedia editors. Another important collaboration was with the Swedish embassy in Madrid. They were interested in participating in the global campaign WikiGap and proposed us to hold an editathon. The event was a success and in addition to editing scientific women, two talks on Women, Science and Technology and Open Science were offered. Finally, another event focused on women, science and technology was held at the University of Granada.

Apart from those two celebrations, other events also emphasized the visibility of women through Wikipedia. Thus, between January and February, a phrase contest took place in Wikiquote, in which phrases from activists, mainly women, who have developed their work in the fight for human and civil rights were incorporated. Besides the Filolowiki editathon, at the faculty of philology of the Complutense University of Madrid focused its attention, on the one hand, on philological aspects, and on the other hand on biographies of French writers.

This work to reduce the gender gap and give visibility to women has not only focused on editing events or contests, but also it included other types of activities. Thus, in January, the exhibition More women on Wikipedia was held at the University of Valencia, where articles about women edited in the educational activities of the university were exposed. On the other hand, on May 26 was organized in Vitoria the Knowledge to be more Free conference, which focused its attention, through various talks and workshops, on topics such as philosophy of knowledge and free culture, the digital environment and the achievements of women in the construction of knowledge and knowledge.

Content diversity is also important to achieve a more diverse Wikimedia ecosystem. In January we celebrated the Antarctica Month, which focused on expanding content on this topic and improving its visibility. We have also worked on other Wikimedia projects; thus, in February we collaborated in the organization of a contest in Wikivoyage, to celebrate its anniversary, and in May we organized the III Wikimedia Pentathlon, in which we worked content related to the rural area of the province of Cuenca on Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikiquote, Wikibooks and Commons, and a workshop of Wiktionary, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla y León (MUSAC), a new collaboration, where definitions of words that the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy has eliminated in its latest edition were included and rescued.

In the context of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games we organized for the second time the Wiki Loves the Olympics contest, with great success of participation and a large amount of content generated in more than 20 languages, focused on venues of the games, sports and athletes, with special attention to Paralympics. Other topics worked in different editathons have been the free cinema, in the context of the creative commons film festival of Valladolid, which was held in the Calderón Theater of Valladolid, and multiculturalism, which was held at the embassy of Canada in Madrid on the occasion of the Multiculturalism Day in Canada.

Also, and taking as an example the same initiative in Catalan Wikipedia, throughout the year we organize the PESCAR contest, whose purpose is to generate content on various topics, such as politics, economy, society, culture, art and religion, both from Spain and from other parts of the world.

Finally, as part of this program, efforts to work in different regions of the country and with local communities in their own Wikipedia stand out. Apart from several activities in which content was also translated into other local languages such as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science editathon, Wiki Loves the Olympics or Art+Feminism editathon, the main milestone, in terms of linguistic diversity, is the Intercultur contest, which we organized for the third consecutive year.

This initiative is focused on translating articles on different cultural aspects between the different Wikipedias of the Iberian Peninsula. This year, for the first time, we also included two languages from Portugal, Portuguese and Mirandese, whose editors received with great enthusiasm editing a large number of articles. Therefore, 10 different languages participated, with the collaboration of Amical Wikimedia, Basque Wikimedians User Group and Wikimedia Portugal.

In our effort to work with more local Wikipedia communities, in March we had a meeting and talk with OSCEC, an association that works for the visibility of Extremaduran; We explained the possibilities of working with the Wikimedia projects and we encouraged them to collaborate with Wikipedia in Extremaduran.

In terms of our geographical scope, in these first six months we have host events in 21 different provinces; a distribution of them can be seen on this map.

GLAM

The activities within the scope of the GLAM initiative have involved working with different institutions and with different purposes. At the level of face-to-face activities, during the academic year 2017-2018, one day a month, we have organized the Wikipedia Club at the Reina Sofía library of the University of Valladolid, which served as a meeting, learning and collaboration point between Wikipedia users and interested public. Likewise, a new collaboration with the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library, the #DatatonCervantes was held at Medialab-Prado in Madrid, where data from its virtual catalog was added to Wikidata items. The number of items edited was more than a thousand thanks in part to semi-automated processes, which is a way of working very different from a typical editathon.

Talk at the GLAm forum in Yerevan

Other sessions have involved the training of the staff of a institution, such as the workshop given on Wikipedia and Commons at the Military Museum of Elvas, or the workshops at the Cervantes Institute, thanks to which they are working to improve contents about the institution in Wikipedia and contributing multimedia material to Commons.

Access to the collections of the institutions is one of the objectives of this program. Apart from that material from the Cervantes Institute, in March we met with the responsible for the Digital Library of Castilla y León with the aim of achieving a change in the legal conditions of its web catalog. The proposal was accepted and the digital library changed its license to CC0, allowing its free use in Wikimedia projects.

Another important step is taking place with the National Geographic Institute. After months of waiting, they finally modified the license of its web contents, which are now compatible with Wikimedia licenses. For this reason, we are managing the massive uploading of geographic content of great value for Wikipedia, such as the topographic map of Spain, aerial photography or old plans, which will involve several thousand files for Commons. The project has aroused some interest and we received the offer that it was one of the projects used to test the new Structured Data in Commons.

Globally, one more year, Wikimedia Spain participated in the #1lib1ref campaign between January and February, and we attended the GLAM forum held in May in Armenia, where we presented our work with several state museums within the context of the GLAMing Madrid project. Finally, throughout these months we have met with several institutions which we have never collaborated with the aim of presenting the possibilities of working with Wikimedia projects, so we hope that in the coming months several of them will begin to organize different types of activities. Among the institutions are the Prado Museum, the Sorolla Museum, the Naval Museum and the National Museum of Roman Art. Several of them are state museums and the collaboration is possible thanks to the MoU with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport that we have renewed.

Media content

In these first six months there have been 4 initiatives that are part of this program, achieving almost 8500 multimedia files on Wikimedia Commons. Event coverage continues with good results; In total there have been more than 20 different events and more than 1,300 photographs obtained, mainly minority sports, but also prominent events such as the Goya Awards (the main cinematographic awards in Spain) or the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, which rejected our accreditation request but we were able to obtain some material thanks to the attendance of a member.

Group photo of wikitakers

We have also organized two scavenger hunts. On the one hand, we photographed an old hospital in Aranjuez, which is going to undergo renovation works, so it was an opportunity to document it in its original state, and on the other hand another of our rural Wiki Takes. In this case the focus was part of the province of Cuenca and 8 people traveled for two days achieving more than 3,000 photographs that fully document this unknown rural area.

Wiki Takes Cuenca enters the context of our project No Spanish municipality without a picture, which after three years continues with good results. So far this year we have obtained almost 800 photographs and there are only about 600 municipalities to be documented. New documentation activities are planned for the fall of 2018, so the number will continue decreasing throughout the year.

Finally, one more year we organize Wiki Loves Earth in order to continue documenting our natural heritage. In this year's edition the number of participants and the number of photos obtained (2,702) has increased compared to previous years, obtaining photographs of 20% of the protected areas in Spain.

In addition to these activities, we organized our awards ceremony for the 2017 photo contests. Education and learning

Our work in the educational field has continued successfully in different ways. The projects that have finished in these months are 17 and they have been developed in the university context, where the students create or edit one or several articles in Wikipedia as part of their academic activity. Among the new projects started this year are topics related to Medicine, Art History or E-Learning. The projects that work on translation in wikipedia are remarkable; The pioneering project was Wikitrad at Jaume I University in Castellón, that received the Banco Santander award in 2018, and it was followed by the University of Murcia, and this year it was held for the first time at the Soria campus of the University of Valladolid.

Another form of approach in the educational field is through training courses for students and university staff. We have carried out, again, two courses at the University of Valladolid, one at the Reina Sofía Library and another at La Yutera campus, in Palencia. Finally, the work in education not only contemplates the edition of articles or the training of future editors, but the diffusion through talks is also important. In these months there have been a total of 20 sessions, including talks and workshops, both in the university and secondary education, and even in an adult training center.

Diversity and geographical reach

Our program of diversity and geographical scope, which seeks to make Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects more diverse, both in terms of content and community participation, has been, yet another year, one of the key pieces of our activity. The program is structured around three main axes: gender gap, linguistic diversity and diversity of contents, and has involved the organization of 30 activities throughout the year, both face-to-face and online. Of all of them, 15 focused on content on women (50%), 13 promoted diversity of content (43%) and two worked on linguistic diversity (6%), although this was also promoted in other activities.

We have worked to reduce the gender gap with different types of activities. In terms of content, we have participated in the organization of 12 face-to-face and three online events, mainly around three times of the year: the International Day for Women and Girls in Science (11 February), International Women's Day (8 March) and Women Writers' Day (Monday 15 October).

The celebration of the International Day for Women and Girls in Science involved the organization of four events: two online and two face-to-face. In the first two were edited articles on women scientists, one was in Spanish and another in Galician. The two face-to-face events were, on the one hand, at the University of Granada, where the article on the activist who promoted the celebration of that day, Nisreen El-Hashemite, was created for the first time, and, on the other hand, at the Official College of Doctors and Graduates in Philosophy and Letters (Madrid), in collaboration with its archaeology section, where articles on women archaeologists or feminist archaeology were published.

The celebration of International Women's Day was the one that brought together the greatest number of events; a total of six, one of them online and the rest face-to-face. In recent years we had organised the local edition of the Art+Feminism initiative in Valencia, but in 2018 we found it difficult to find a space to celebrate it, so it was decided to promote it online. The experience was a success and articles were published both in Spanish and Catalan. Another of the initiatives, Women and Archaeology, was held again, this time with two different events; on the one hand, in the National Archaeological Museum of Madrid, and on the other, in the Prehistory Museum of Valencia, in collaboration with Amical Wikimedia and the University of Valencia. In both cases, the institutions contributed bibliographic material for the creation or improvement of the contents.

Another of the events around the 8th of March was the edition on Canarian scientists which was held at the Elder Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with significant support from public institutions, and which was attended by a large number of secondary school students. It coincided with the Hack for Good event, in which, on the one hand, there was a talk about Wikimedia, and on the other, the different participating groups were encouraged to work on a tool that would facilitate obtaining data on the gender gap in the Wikipedia community of contributors.

More women on Wikipedia exhibition

At the suggestion of the Swedish Embassy in Madrid, in 2018 we joined the global WikiGap initiative for the first time. The event, which took place in the embassy itself, was a successful participation, with the attendance of students from two universities, and throughout the day, in addition to editing content on scientists, there were various talks on Women, Science and Technology and Open Science. Also, we promoted the attendance of women scientists that we could photograph in our photocall, in order to later illustrate their articles in Wikipedia. Finally, another event focused on women, science and technology was held at the University of Granada.

Finally, another of the commemorations we celebrated was the Women Writers' Day. For the third consecutive year we collaborated with the National Library of Spain in its organization; this year we decided to move the event to the day of celebration itself, which was on Monday, instead of Saturday as on previous occasions to make it coincide with the different activities that took place in the library on the occasion of that commemoration. As it was a working day, participation was lower than on other occasions but the volume of content was significant. In addition, press coverage was wider than in previous years, with on-site presence of television and radio.

In addition to these three main campaigns, four other events were organized to increase the content and visibility of women on Wikipedia. One of them was an online Wikiquote contest, between January and February, which promoted the inclusion of phrases from activists, mainly women, who have developed their work in the fight for human and civil rights. The prizes consisted of books on activism. In May, the Filolowiki editathon was held at the Faculty of Philology of the Complutense University of Madrid; students from different courses participated and so, while some focused on philological aspects, others worked on biographies of French women writers.

The last two events of the year, focused on this theme, were EducadorasWiki and Wikithon Inspiring Girls. The first took place on the university campus of Ceuta, where it was the first activity we celebrated in this city. A large number of education students participated, focusing on biographies of female professors, and had a wide media presence. The second was part of a broader initiative, promoted by the Inspiring Girls Foundation, which sought to make scientists, researchers and technologists visible on Wikipedia in Spanish. The event was attended by high school students and in Spain was organized in Madrid, Huesca and Barcelona, the latter with the support of other organizations.

Apart from the Wikipedia editing sessions, other activities related to the gender gap and women's visibility were the following: in January, the exhibition More women on Wikipedia was organised at the University of Valencia, in which the articles on women published in the educational project Sociological Analysis from a Gender Perspective (2017-18), which took place at that university last academic year, were exhibited. On 26 May, the conference Knowledge to be Freer was organised in Vitoria, which focused its attention, through various talks and workshops, on topics such as the philosophy of knowledge and free culture, the digital environment and the achievements of women in the construction of knowledge and knowledge.

A moment during the Knowledge to be Freer conference

On 13 November, as part of the Sharing Cities Summit Barcelona 2018, we participated in a round table focused on the exhibition of examples and projects with a gender perspective within Wikipedia. Other organisations and groups such as Dimmons UOC, LiquenDataLab, Viquidones - Wikimujeres, Geochicas and GenTic UOC also took part in the session. Finally, on 30 November we participated in the event Talent Woman España, in Malaga, with a talk on the gender gap in Wikipedia and the projects we carry out in this field, followed by an editing workshop to add editors to the project.

In terms of diversity in our own community, at the beginning of 2019 Wikimedia España had 171 members, 50 of which were women, 29.23%.

The diversity of content in Wikimedia projects is another of the key pieces for achieving a more diverse and equalitarian knowledge ecosystem and thus reducing the existing gap both in terms of content and Wikimedia projects. Twelve activities were promoted in this area, seven of them online and six face-to-face. In January we celebrated, for the first time, Antarctica Month, the aim of which was to expand content on this continent and improve its visibility. The person who edited the most took a book about Antarctica as a gift.

In February we collaborated in the celebration of the fifth anniversary of Wikivoyage as a Wikimedia project supporting the organization of a contest, an initiative that was born in Wikivoyage in Russian to celebrate the 5,000 articles in their language. Between February and March, in the context of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, we organised for the second time the Wiki Loves the Olympics contest, with great success in terms of participation and a large amount of content generated in more than 20 languages, centred on the venues of the games, sports and athletes, with special attention to the Paralympic Games.

Wiktionary editathon group photo

In May, and for the third consecutive year, we organized the III Wikimedia Pentathlon, although this time it was online due to some logistical difficulties in organizing it. The theme of this edition was content related to the province of Cuenca, to complete the work done during the Wiki Takes Cuenca, and we edited Wikipedia, Commons, Wikivoyage, Wikiquote and Wikibooks. Also in May we organized, for the first time, an event related to Wiktionary. It was at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), in León, and throughout the day definitions of words were added that the dictionary of the Real Academia Española eliminated in its last edition. In addition to the definitions, it included the etymology of the words as well as an audio with their pronunciation that the participants themselves recorded in situ.

Free cinema editathon

In June we worked on two very different topics. On the one hand, free cinema, in an editathon held at the Calderón Theatre in Valladolid, within the framework of the ccVAD Valladolid Creative Commons Film Festival, with the aim of generating content on free software and hardware to produce cinema, the CC World festival network, films under a Creative Commons licence and directors or producers of free cinema. On the other hand, we collaborated again with the Canadian Embassy in Spain through the organization of an editathon in the embassy itself. This year focused on Multiculturalism Day, to celebrate diversity and commitment to democracy, equality and mutual respect and to appreciate the contributions of diverse multicultural groups and communities to Canadian society.

In September, together with Wikimedia Armenia, we organized an online writing challenge with the aim of contributing to the dissemination of the culture, history, heritage and any other aspect of both countries. The activity is part of the initiative that Wikimedia Armenia has been doing for several years, collaborating with other Wikimedia groups and promoting cultural exchange. As a reward, the two editors who contributed the most will soon travel to Armenia, where they will share a few days with the Armenian Wikipedia community, while the two Armenian winners will come to Spain for the same purpose.

In October we participated in the organization of a hackaton at the University of Alicante, in collaboration with the Virtual Library Miguel de Cervantes. A good number of students participated in the event, divided into groups and working on eight tools or applications to visualize Wikidata information. In addition, during the event, we celebrated the anniversary of Wikidata.

In November we collaborated again in the organization of the online Wikipedia Asian Month, with the intention of improving the quantity and quality of articles on topics related to Asia. Already in December we collaborated in the organization of two other face-to-face activities; on the one hand the datathon every politician, in Madrid, in order to identify sources of political data and processes for updating the information in Wikidata, within the framework of the WikiProject every politician and in collaboration with MySociety. On the other hand, the editathon Medialab, in Gijón, whose focus of interest was the lines of work that are developed in the Medialab of the University of Oviedo: Intelligent Tourist Destinations, Ecodesign, Nanomaterials and sensors applied to biomedicine and Engineering.

Finally, throughout the year, we organized the online contest PESCAR. Its origin is in Wikipedia in Catalan, where it was organized in 2017, and we found it interesting to apply in Wikipedia in Spanish. Throughout the year it was proposed to create content on various topics such as politics, economics, society, culture, art and religion, both in Spain and other parts of the world, in different historical moments, from prehistory to the present day. The experience was a success, with more than 500 articles created and around twenty participants.

Presentation during Celtic Knot Conference

The third piece of the diversity program is the work with local communities on their own Wikipedia as well as the effort to work in different regions of the country. In different activities of those mentioned above, such as the editathons of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Art+Feminism editathon , Wiki Loves the Olympics, the III Wikimedia Pentathlon or the Armenia Challenge, content was edited in other local languages, such as Catalan, Galician and Asturian.

However, the main event, in terms of linguistic diversity, was the Intercultur contest, which we organised in February for the third consecutive year. This initiative focuses on the translation of articles on different cultural aspects between the different Wikipedias of the Iberian Peninsula. This year, for the first time, we have also included two languages of Portugal, Portuguese and Mirandese, whose editors received with great enthusiasm and edited a large number of articles. Therefore, 10 different languages participated, with the collaboration of Amical Wikimedia, the Basque Wikimedians User Group and Wikimedia Portugal.

In addition to Intercultur, in October we collaborated with an editathon of Wikidata, at the University of Oviedo, which proposed to its students and the interested public to add information to Wikidata in Asturian. The session was preceded by several talks on the semantic web and Wikimedia projects. On the other hand, as a way of attracting more local communities to Wikipedia, in March we had a meeting and talk with OSCEC, an association that works for the visibility of Extremaduran; we explained the possibilities of working with Wikimedia projects and encouraged them to collaborate with Wikipedia in Extremaduran.

In this context, we also participated in the Celtic Knot Conference 2018, in Wales, where a session on Galician Literature in Wikipedias: from Middle-Age lyric to contemporaneous crime fiction took place. Finally, in terms of geographical scope, in 2018 we held different types of activities in 30 different provinces of Spain. The distribution of these can be seen in this map.

GLAM

A moment during the #DatatonCervantes

Collaboration with GLAM institutions has involved a wide variety of activities. On a regular basis, throughout the year (except in Summer) Wikipedia Club sessions were held, one day each month, in the Reina Sofia Library of the University of Valladolid. Each session served as a meeting point, learning and collaboration between wikipedians and interested public.

Between January and February, two proposals for editing content took place. On the one hand, we participated again in the global campaign #1Lib1Ref, encouraging librarians and, in general, the Wikipedia community to provide references to Wikipedia articles, and on the other hand, we started a collaboration with the Virtual Library Miguel de Cervantes with the organization of #DatatonCervantes, in Medialab-Prado, Madrid. During the event, data from its virtual catalogue was added to Wikidata, resulting in a large number of edited elements thanks in part to semi-automatic processes carried out by the participants.

Other sessions consisted of training the staff of an institution, such as a Wikipedia and Commons workshop at the Military Museum of Elvas, with which we had no previous relationship, and a series of workshops at the Cervantes Institute in Madrid, in order for the institution itself to be able to improve Wikipedia content and provide multimedia material to Commons. In March we met with the Digital Library of Castille and Leon with the aim of achieving a change in the legal conditions of its web catalogue; the proposal was accepted and the digital library changed its licence to CC0, allowing the free use of its contents in Wikimedia projects.

Talk at the GLAM forum in Yerevan

In May we attended the GLAM forum held in Yerevan, Armenia, which brought together experts and representatives of the Wikimedia movement and Armenia. At the event we presented our work with several state museums in the context of the GLAMing Madrid project at the end of 2015. Years after that project, the relationship with the network of state museums continues thanks to the annual renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. In 2018, for example, we met with the Prado Museum, the Naval Museum and the National Museum of Roman Art, with whom we hope to collaborate in the future.

With another museum that form part of this state network, the Sorolla Museum, we began a collaboration through several actions. On the one hand, a series of workshops were carried out in which the museum staff and interested public participated, with the aim of teaching the Wikipedia editing rules, policies, etc. Thanks to them, from the museum they began to contribute content to articles related to the institution and to Joaquín Sorolla and his family. Another achievement was the upload to Commons, under free licence, of more than fifty images from their collections, which made it possible to illustrate contents about Sorolla's work. Related to this, during the month of November the Sorolla Challenge was held, an online publishing competition that proposed the creation of articles on paintings by Joaquín Sorolla. The winners received several books donated by the museum itself.

Our representatives at GLAMWIKI Conference in Tel Aviv

At the beginning of November we participated in the GLAMWiki Conference 2018, which took place in Tel Aviv, Israel. There we participated in two sessions; on the one hand we presented our collaboration with the National Geographic Institute as a pilot project for the future development of Structured Data in Commons, and on the other hand there was a talk about the Wiki Takes that we carried out in the Roman museums of Zaragoza in 2016. Also in November we collaborated in the second edition of Canary Islands fortifications editathon, held at the Castillo de Mata Museum, with whom we had already collaborated previously. The aim of the event was to create and improve articles related to the fortifications built in the Canary Islands.

Among all the initiatives carried out throughout 2018, the collaboration with the National Geographic Institute stands out. After months of waiting, the modification of the license of its web contents was published, which since then is CC-BY 4.0 and, therefore, compatible with Commons. From that moment on, we started the process of uploading them to Wikimedia Commons. First, we identified a series of materials that would be interesting to upload at first: topographical maps, aerial photographs and old plans.

Storage space was requested on Wikimedia Labs and, after several weeks of management, we had access to a virtual hard drive. From there we downloaded the first package, the MTN25 topographic map, with more than 9,000 files. Once the information was processed, the upload took place. From the first moment, WMF was interested in the project and we received the suggestion to propose it as a Structured Data pilot project. We accepted the proposal and throughout 2019 the following packages of materials from the Institute will be uploaded to Commons in this new form.

Finally, it should be noted that some activities from other programmes, such as Diversity, have been carried out in GLAM spaces: the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, the Prehistory Museum of Valencia, the Elder Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the National Library of Spain in Madrid or the Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla y León collaborated in the organization of different editions.

Media content

Group photo of some of the attendants to the Wiki Loves awards ceremony

Our multimedia content program is organized around several working lines. On the one hand, there were three photography contests in 2018. Firstly, Wiki Loves Earth in May, with the aim of documenting protected natural spaces; in our 2018 edition the number of participants increased by 21% and slightly the number of images obtained, 8%. Secondly, Wiki Loves Monuments, in September, is focused on documenting monuments; in our 2018 edition, unlike other years, we discarded the objective of rewarding monuments or municipalities without a previous picture for the technical difficulties presented by differentiating their evaluation, having to be a manual task, so we accept any type of monument. This decision led to an increase in the number of participants (33%) and in the number of photos (54%).

Thirdly, Wiki Loves Folk, in November, with the aim of photographing popular festivals and traditions. It was the third year that we organized it and again Amical Wikimedia joined the campaign. The number of participants and images was lower but we are glad that a small initiative like this continues to encourage people's participation. Related to these three contests, on June 16 we held the award ceremony for the 2017 contests; it was at Medialab-Prado in Madrid, and in addition to the awards, there were several talks on the importance of sharing material on Wikimedia Commons, the photographic activities of the Wikimedia movement and the application for uploading images from mobile devices.

Another axis was the coverage of events, through press accreditations, with the aim of obtaining images that otherwise would not be easy. In 2018 we covered 39 different events, most of them minority sports, in addition to the Mediterranean Games 2018, but also cinematographic events such as the Goya Awards (the most important in Spain) or musical events such as the Eurovision Song Contest 2018.

The project No Spanish municipality without a photograph continues its development and we are getting closer and closer to its completion. At the end of 2018 there are only about 400 municipalities left to document, out of a total of more than 8000. In this context, in 2018 we organised two new Wiki Takes in rural areas to continue the documentation work. In May we organized Wiki Takes Cuenca, during which 8 people toured the province of Cuenca and obtained more than 3,000 photographs, and in October we organized Wiki Takes Zamora, in which 12 people obtained more than 2,000 photographs. Other Wiki Takes, apart from the mentioned project, were Wiki Takes Estadilla, in a small town of Huesca where a librarians conferences were held and where they were encouraged to carry out initiatives with the Wikimedia projects, and Wiki Takes Catedral de Santa María, in Vitoria, in the context of our annual conferences that took place there in October.

A moment during our presentation in Wikimania

In relation to these Wiki Takes, in Wikimania 2018 in Cape Town, we offered a session on these initiatives, our motivation, how we organise them, results, etc. with the aim of making it known and encouraging other groups to carry out these types of initiatives. Another activity to obtain material for Wikimedia Commons was the documentation of an old hospital in Aranjuez, which was going to undergo rehabilitation works, so it was an opportunity to document it in its original state. Finally, as part of all the material obtained in 2018, it is worth mentioning the collaborations with the Sorolla Museum, the National Geographic Institute and the Cervantes Institute.

Objective Goal Results Status

Education and learning

Group photo of the attendants to the talk at an adult education centre in Soria

In 2018 we collaborated in the development of a total of 18 educational projects, eight of which were being carried out for the first time. Most have been developed in the university setting, where students generally had to create or edit one or more Wikipedia articles as part of their academic training, but some have focused on secondary education. Among the new projects started this year are topics related to Medicine, Art History, E-Learning or Quantum Information. It is particularly significant the case of the Wikitrad project of the Jaume I University of Castellón, which received a Banco Santander award in 2018; its model was followed by the University of Murcia and this year it was held for the first time in the Soria campus of the University of Valladolid.

In addition to introducing Wikipedia in the classroom, we have continued with training initiatives in the university environment, both for students and staff. Thus, we once again organised two courses at the University of Valladolid, one at the Reina Sofia Library and the other at the La Yutera campus in Palencia. Finally, the education program not only includes the direct edition of Wikipedia, but also its dissemination and knowledge in the field of education. Thus, in 2018, we have carried out a total of 48 sessions including talks and workshops, both at university and secondary school, and even in an adult education centre. All of them had an audience of more than 1,200 people.

In relation to the objective of achieving 1-2% retention, we have realized that the idea, while important to know how many students continue to edit after classroom activity, is difficult to quantify, mainly for technical reasons because there are no, or we do not know of, tools that provide that information. This technical difficulty is compounded by the fact that it would be information to be provided at the end of 2019.
