Our staffing plan has expanded to handle expansion of partnerships and programming as well as more international and inter-regional programming and contractor 1’s expanded responsibilities.

AfroCROWD's aim for 2020-2021 has been altered to adapt to the vastly changing times which we are currently experiencing. We have begun work documenting the Black experience during the COVID 19 Pandemic, and ensure the sharing of information among the many languages of the African Diaspora, linking with global partners to do this. We are also continuing the expanded work we began in the Caribbean.

Additionally, we are also looking to expand use of Youtube and involve tech like 360 virtual reality and other innovations to expand. We also want to take a look at disaster response in the area of open access to the tech that makes editing Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wiki Commons possible.

We also want to expand our participation in One Librarian one Reference and Internet in a Box tech.

Finally, we want to expand our participation in Wikidata projects.

As we adapt to our programming being moved at least for the short term solely online, we want to expand our creativity around how to reach out, locate and work together with the our community and partners online and in the created spaces of the Wikimedia Movement.

It is a great time to work together, even as our worlds are operating a minimum 6 feet apart. We are dedicated to discovering what is possible.

Despite the advent of the Corona Virus and an international pandemic that has derailed plans throughout the Wikimedia movement and the World, AfroCROWD remains optimistic about the future of its initiative. In fact, the crisis has built our resolve and perspective on the utility of knowledge through platforms like Wikipedia to empower us during uncertain times. Despite the changes, we have adapted to continue to develop during the pandemic, using our programming to encourage and teach and even entertain those we partner and work to engage in the WIkipedia community and new areas like the Caribbean diaspora.

Engaging both the languages of the African Diaspora and oral knowledge, we will also be holding:

  • One or more events in collaboration with Wikitongues and other partners, generating oral testimonials in several African Diaspora languages to be uploaded to Commons.
  • A Haitian Creole Translatathon
  • A Francophone editathon engaging French and francophone communities in partnership with WMNYC, Wikifranca and Wikimedia Canada
  • We would like to continue to have more translation events focused on languages in the African Diaspora (for example Haitian Kreyòl and Garifuna)
  • We drafted affiliates agreements to be signed by AfroCROWD branch organizers going forward
  • We’re going to continue including wikidata in our editathon trainings
  • We plan again to have a women focused virtual editathon campaign. It would focus on Wiki Project African Diaspora during African Union Day May 25th.
  • We will be collaborating with partners and organizations from the African Diaspora for a Black film editathon focused on films within the African diaspora.
  • We are looking at a cos-play / comics editathon in partnership with BLERD and other partners. This can be done online.
  • We will continue using our training videos to encourage editathons that do not require our physical presence in locations where we cannot necessarily travel and will be implementing voice overs for the tutorials.

AfroCROWD will continue to seek to increase awareness of the Wikimedia and free knowledge, culture and software movements among potential editors of African descent. AfroCROWD events and activities will engage existing contributors and new contributors in building community and in content creation with the aim of bridging the multicultural gap in editorship and content coming from and regarding Africa and the African Diaspora through online meetups, editathons, public speaking, social media outreach, community engagement, and partnerships with cultural grassroots groups in our target groups and GLAM and educational institutions.

Goal By June 30, 2021: Continue to maintain existing community in the United States and support factors of growth

  • Continue to work on integration and cross-fertilization of existing AfroCROWD community to the broader movement
  • 2 AfroCROWDers attend Wikimania
  • 4-5 Articles in blogs, local or national press
  • Hold an editathon, translatathon or recordathon per trimester (online while restrictions remain)
  • Generate a monthly newsletter of AfroCROWD news and activities in the Wikipedia Movement

Overall on-wiki measures:

  • About 100 articles edited or created or photos uploaded for the year (including some in other languages spoken in the African diaspora)
  • Over 100 people attend editathons online or in person once we can hold offline events in 2021
  • Over 100 people hear presentations at conferences or when we are invited to present and restrictions are dropped
  • Over 100 people edit Wikipedia with us
  • Other measures:
  • 20 new contributors make 2+ edits within 4 months after participating in an event, and 5+ existing contributors report increased engagement as a result of their attendance at online meetups and editathons or their participation in other AfroCROWD activities.
  • AfroCROWD will continue to hold 9-12 events for the year with at least 4 editathons online or in person once restrictions are dropped being held in the United States and one overseas, each of which will have at least 8-15 participants with at least 5 participants for overseas or events within the United States or online.
  • All meetups will be facilitated by an experienced AfroCROWDer with the aim to increase participation among diverse, underrepresented populations in the African Diaspora.

Goal By June 30, 2021: Grow the AfroCROWD User Group

AfroCROWD is now a Wikimedia User Group and we would like to continue growth under this distinction Educate event participants, newsletter readers and social media followers about the activities of the user group Research user group governance and network and continue learning from mentors among similarly situated user groups We intend to study organizational growth and development


Goal by June 30, 2021: Continue to create a bridge between African and African Diaspora Wikipedians

We aim to do this through:

  • Attendance of one or two AfroCROWD representatives at the next Wiki Indaba should it happen in the coming fiscal year once restrictions are lifted
  • An international joint campaign for Black History Month with an Africa based and /or Caribbean based group
  • Continued involvement and showcasing of Wikimedians of the African Diaspora in US, Europe, the Caribbean and South America through remote events
  • Hold events deepening awareness of Wikipedias in languages of Africa and the African Diaspora in collaboration with African Wikimedian groups and Latin-American Wikimedian groups (another Wiki Project Africn Diaspora virtual campaign, the Whoseknowledge annual Visible Women virtual campaign)

Goal By June 30, 2021: AfroCROWD will hold 10 online events and editathons including a Wiki Commons and Wikidata edit-a-thon.

AfroCROWD will continue to hold events and editathons throughout the coming grant cycle aimed at awareness and editor recruitment in our target audiences, centered on diversity gaps, engaging the many languages of Africa and the African Diaspora Wiki Languages. Including an edit-a-thon focused on Wiki Commons and Wiki Data.

Wiki Languages of Africa and the African Diaspora

Objective: By June 30, 2021, AfroCROWD will: Hold a Haitian Creole Translatathon or other Francophone online event engage Spanish-speaking Afrolatinx communities in Latin-America with Wikimedia Uruguay and Afrolatino Project via an online program/ event begin translating and voice over of the video in at least 1 of 3 languages of the African Diaspora, likely French and Spanish. bring attention and awareness to the various African and African diaspora languages through outreach and 2 programs

Engaging both the languages of the African Diaspora and oral knowledge, generating oral testimonials in several African Diaspora languages to be uploaded to Commons. Goal By June 30, 2021: AfroCROWD will be featured in 2 press articles. Wikimedia Movement Awareness, Involvement and Visibility Campaign

Continued Wikimedia Movement Awareness, Involvement and Visibility Campaign Visibility is a key part of the AfroCROWD initiative, and a powerful tool in spreading the word about the Wikimedia movement. With the advent of COVID-19 we have had to make adjustments, but visibility online has remained an important part of what we do to remain connected to the community, and is also a key pre-requisite to meeting the movement's strategic goal of knowledge equity.

Media

Media-wise, we have previously been featured in the New York Times, and the Guardian among other news outlets, and this grant cycle, our mentions include leading German news source, "Deutsche Welle" and news in Nigeria and Oregon as well as the Wiki Edu Blog.

Monthly Newsletter

Objective: By June 30, 2021 AfroCROWD will expand it’s newsletter outreach by 250 recipients made up of
  • partners within the movement,
  • potential participants, partners and influencers outside the Wikimedia movement who we think would make good Wikipedians, and
  • past editathon and event attendees who we want to remain aware of AfroCROWD and movement activities
  • AfroCROWD will continue summarizing all known happenings concerning Wikimedia and people of African descent in Africa and the African Diaspora in its monthly newsletter which currently reaches out to over 3,000 recipients, depending on the campaign, all over the world.

AfroCROWD will support international programs related to the scope of closing the diversity and gender gaps as either a main node or via satellite events for at least 4 programs.

We will support international programs related to the scope of closing the diversity and gender gaps as either a main node or via satellite events. Support entails creating event pages that can serve as the main event page for global nodes, outreach, networking or resource sharing or social media support. Part of partnership development is communications. We would also like to look into improving our ability to connect internationally and investigate better ways that may be available to do so. For example, we would like to look into improved conferencing options for international meetings among partners and Wikimedia groups.

Midterm report edit

Between July 2020 and January 2021, we have undergone immense change as a planet, as a Movement, and most certainly in AfroCROWD's case, as a Wikimedia initiative and user group. We began this period under the pall of a destructive and ravenous pandemic that even now continues to consume the earth. Along with it, communities in the United States are reeling from racial and political unrest, which has led to interminable political upheaval.

Add to this tumultuous mixture a troubled environment and climate change, and you will have a better understanding of the themes that molded AfroCROWD's trajectory over the last 6 months. The final seasons of 2020 would not allow business as usual. It has been a time of internal growth, adaptation and expansion outside of norms, even as it has been a time of deeper focus.

AfroCROWD has been part of the Movement Strategy process through our director, Sherry Antoine, who was also elected in 2020 to represent North America and the Caribbean on the Movement Strategy Design team.

The advent of the COVID19 Pandemic wiped clean any prospect of travel or in-person meetings for most of the globe. We couldn't move forward with conferences and other regularly scheduled in-person meeting plans allocated. As a result, we had the potential to try something new with those funds. Once we received permission, we decided to use this unexpected resource to invest in partnership through a skills and leadership development and skills share.

An important part of sustainability is skills development for those who help organize the programs that are helping to develop the future of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Movement. AfroCROWD is committed to growing knowledge in our community among women especially. We also value strong synergistic partnerships. Last December we connected with Wikipedians at partners Open Foundation West Africa who were indispensable when we asked one of our organizers to connect with them at their facility in Accra for an international edit-a-thon event to document the historic 2019 Year of Return for the African Diaspora marking 400 years of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in the United States.

The experience deepened our partnership with them. When the skillshare idea came up, it was natural to approach them to see if any of the courses we found through the game-changing organization EdX, which we planned to use for AfroCROWD, could also be useful for them. We were thrilled when OFWA leader Joy Ageypong took us up on the offer. We are excited to hear that this was useful for her in her role in the Wiki community as an organizer.

In December 2020, her coursework complete, we received a testimonial on her achievement and experience. We look forward to more opportunities like this moving forward. We are looking at ways to use Wikipedia education modules for more localized skillshare with materials freely available in the movement. In our remote learning project, for example, a Wiki skillshare can be a useful tool as well.

This year we celebrated 20 years of Wikipedia, joining Wikipedia editors all over the world in remembering 20 years of the quest for knowledge. It has been a year to remember, not only for the Movement as Wikipedia made the twenty year mark, but for the world as we all continue to experience the continued scourge of the COVID 19 pandemic. While, thankfully, the discovery of vaccines in record time has meant that we are collectively seeing a light at the end of this long tunnel and may soon be able to meet in person once again, there is a lot that we have learned during this season. We have deepened in our knowledge of what is possible as well as in our understanding of the dimensions of the general service of what we do.

This report aims to track AfroCROWD's growth, progress and lessons learned during these developments even as we celebrate making it to the other side of 20 years of Wikipedia!

Program story edit

A new and deeper dimension for AfroCROWD during this continued time of unrest and uncertainty, a time when the value of information and the dynamics and trust in information sources are down, is that representation in information coverage in traditional sources like newspapers are ever more important. In many cases, local, black-owned newspapers can be overlooked when Wikipedia editors consider credible information sources.

Among our projects to highlight this year, AfroCROWD partnered with the News On Wiki Campaign to improve coverage of Black-owned, local and Caribbean newspapers on Wikipedia, co-led by AfroCROWD’s ED Sherry Antoine.

As the COVID 19 Pandemic continues on, we are learning more about how to make the most of video conferencing to improve and enhance the online workshop experience for participants in the face of distractions, Zoom fatigue and other terms that have become so common in this era. We have since developed ways to counter these challenges as seen in our editathons this year, including our week long Black History the Women's History month series which engaged several notable speakers including:

  • Nigerian author and award-winning National Geographics photographer Lola Akinmade Åkerström, who joined us from Sweden as we discussed Black imagery on Wikimedia Commons with editors from partner African Women on Board and our friends at Wikimedia Nigeria.
  • Alexandria Lockett, PHD, an experienced Wikipedian and assistant English professor at renown HBCU Spelman College in Atlanta, as we joined Stanford and Oregon State University Librarians to focus on on Black Women in American History.
  • ImageNation Cinema founder, Moikgantsi Kgama, who joined us in New York to discuss her journey as a pioneer in the Black entertainment industry during our 6th annual Black History Month Wikipedia Editathon in partnership with the world renowned Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture with students and professors from New York University in Los Angeles, a branch of New York University focusing on arts and entertainment.
  • In addition to these efforts, long-time AfroCROWDers like Wiki coach and AfroCROWDer community organizer, Linda Fletcher, were regularly getting together with friends and members of her community to hold Wikipedia gatherings and study hours online to stay connected during the isolation.

In all of these cases, we were able to continue meeting and editing through video conferencing on Zoom and other applications.
