c:Commons:Wiki Loves Africa is a photo contest organized since 2014 in Africa. It aims to solve the following problems
- low amount of visual, contemporary coverage of Africa on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects
- low visibility and understanding of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects in Africa
- low figures of participation to Wikimedia projects from Africa
This grant request intends to focus precisely on the prize management of the contest.
What is the problem you're trying to solve? edit
What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project.

A photo contest means... winners. And we would like winners to receive gifts as it
- provide visibility before and during the contest and help sustain good participation figures
- support photographers in Africa and invite them to provide free images to the world
- do outreach as we celebrate the winners (social media buzz, certificates they can put on walls, stickers they can stick on their equipment...)
Problem is that actually providing the gifts to winners require
- some administrative support such as bank account and a stable postal address
- reliable centralized management for accuracy (to avoid overlapping of action and payements for example)
- traceability, financial and legal backup
In short, it would not be appropriate that the prizes be collected on an individual bank account and send around the world from this individual bank account.

We propose that the activities related to WLA 2019 international prizes be handled through Yorg (this is the pet name of Ynternet.org).
Ynternet.org is a Swiss Foundation with over 10 years of international activity at an international level. It has successfully been the fiscal host of Wiki Loves Africa for the past two years. It is aligned with our values and several of its staff/members are wikimedians. It has already been a grantee of the Wikimedia Foundation. Thanasis is its Executive Director.

What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually.

- Increase visibility of Wiki Loves Africa 2019 before, during and after the contest by providing good prizes
- Increase quality of participation with a good rewarding system for the winners
- Bring trust in the drive as prize management will be coordinated
Note 1 : many countries are also providing local gifts to winners, supported by rapid grants or local donations. We propose to track which countries are giving what and will formalize a summary page where this will be recorded.
Note 2 : we are still looking for some external funding or prizes donations for the winners gifts. If anything succeed, the Wikimedia Foundation will be informed

Do you have any goals around participation or content? edit
Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable.
Yes, we do hope that providing good prizes and actually delivering them will actually impact participation to Wikimedia Commons and will bring good content. This said... we can not easily give figures of this exclusively related to prizes themselves.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project? Identification of prizes and communication during contest (January-February)
* Finalize prizes and goodies to be offered and share the information. This will be probably done before the Project Grant is reviewed... (we are being optimistic that you will not let us hang dry...)
We aim to provide the following prize structure (those are estimates, might fluctuate a bit depending on what is finally offered)
- 1st prize: US$1000
- 2nd prize: US$800
- 3rd prize: US$500
Additional categories
- Women in sport : US$500
- Culturally specific or traditional formal forms of play, recreation or events : US$500
Each winner will also receive a pack of goodies (proposed: a hat "I edit Wikipedia from Africa", a branded battery, stickers
All top-15 winners of the international contest + the additional categories will receive goodies + a certificate
Delivering the prizes (May-August 2019) edit
The activities will include
- After jury provides the list of winners, identify each person, contact, and inform them
- Gathering administrative information about each of them, necessary to track and send them gifts.
- Invite winners to share stories
- Prepare the certificates, buy the goodies, collect any additional gift (resulting from a potential donation by another organization in the next couple of month, if any)
- Send certificates, goodies and additional gifts
- Wire the amount of the prize
- Collect and curate information about all gifts provided by all partners (national gifts + international gifts) to get a better sense of how much is actually spend in prizes globally and use this information for next year WLA.
Budget edit
How you will use the funds you are requesting? List bullet points for each expense. (You can create a table later if needed.) Don’t forget to include a total amount, and update this amount in the Probox at the top of your page too!
- Prizes : $3300
- Goodies and certificates: $1000
- Administrative costs : $2000
- Shipping/Financial costs : $700
Note: shipping prizes estimated fairly high in case physical gifts are offered (requires courrier). Financial costs estimated fairly high as well as sending money to African countries often turns out to be... time consuming. If money saved on this, can be send back or used for communication material later in the year.
Goodies might also include some leaflets and stickers printing for use in 2019 to promote the photo contest in or from Europe (currently... zero budget available to do so)

The prize management structure itself will be discussed, explained, and promoted through the Facebook group of Wiki Loves Africa, as well as on the working page dedicated to the contest on meta in December 2018 and January 2019 so as to establish precisely which goodies should be selected so as to mention them during the contest. All national lead organizers will be contacted to discuss prizes.

- It has been challenging every single year. It is not possible to simply distribute amazon vouchers in Africa :) The first few years, we bought objects and shipped them. But this requires courrier shipping (which is expensive) to have a certain degree of certainty people would actually get the gift. Last year, we picked up subscriptions to Adobe tools, which was a decent solution (but requires flexibility as a winner already had the subscription planned). Anthere (talk)

- Support Wiki Loves Africa is one of the jewels of our movement, and its results get more impressive each year. The participants deserve to be celebrated, and it is a worthy cause to make sure that winners get recognised. I was not aware of Yorg, but since they have already been involved and presumably due diligence has already been done, I trust the proposed solution.
