Project idea
editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editWhat problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Wikipedia in Spanish has very little content related to sustainable fashion and to the fashion industry. For example, there is no Category:Sustainable Fashion (in Spanish), and the Category:Clothing and the Environment (in Spanish) merely has two articles, out of which Sustainable Fashion (in Spanish) is very brief. We have also noticed that the foremost female leaders in sustainable fashion do not have Wikipedia articles. This is actually part of a bigger problem in Wikipedia, namely the overall lack of biographies of prominent women.
As to the English Wikipedia, there is no Category:Sustainable Fashion nor Category:Clothing and the Environment either. Other language editions are in a similar situation.
Furthermore, there are not many female editors in Wikipedia. This is a well-known issue.
These two problems —the lack of articles related to sustainable fashion and the lack of female editors— may have a common solution, namely to coordinate and train hundreds of students, educators, and Fashion Revolution volunteers so that they may create the missing articles and, by doing so, join the Wikimedia community.
Broader context
editAccording to the UN, the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. And it's not only the environment that is paying the price: workers' lives are in jeopardy too. As we all know, this is a vast industry, with thousands working in each step of the supply chain: 80% of the people working in this industry are women, and more than 350 million of people work in the cotton industry alone.
But how many Latin Americans work in this industry? What is its true impact on our flora, on our fauna, —and most importantly— on our people? The truth is that information regarding 'clean' fashion across Wikipedia is not always up-to-date. It is also quite scarce and not detailed enough to really shed light on this issue and raise awareness of the current problems that are taking place. Addressing this is of paramount importance if we want people to take action and create a positive change.
What is your solution to this problem?
editFor the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We'd like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
In the fashion industry and in the sustainable fashion movement, most of the people that are involved and interested in it are women. According to the NGO Fashion Revolution (which we volunteer for), 94% of its community identify as a women, and 32% work or study in the field of fashion.
We understand that the many articles related to sustainable fashion that Wikipedia lacks and needs will only be created and developed if a great number of people get involved in the project. We also understand that Wikipedia does not currently have editors —especially female editors— interested in fashion that are able to do this. That is why our solution is to train fashion students and educators to use tools to edit Wikipedia.
With this grant, we will seek to create articles which will serve as a wealth of information that is readily available for anyone interested in consulting it. We will contact several universities to recruit fashion students and educators to create and edit articles related to sustainable fashion. We will also contact translation universities and members of the broader Fashion Revolution community so that they may translate the articles created by the fashion academics into other languages. The volunteers would be mostly fashion and translation students and educators, so —together with the organisers— it would mostly be an all-female team.
Our project will make use of the great amount of information made available by Fashion Revolution. Our goal is not to just upload that content into Wikipedia, but to compile the information and the sources they offer in order to translate them into Spanish and create Volunteer Study Materials.
For example, in the Volunteer Study Materials, volunteers will find explanations of what Mola and Huipil are, figures related to the environmental impact of some processes in use by the fashion industry, the psychology behind shopping addiction, just to name a few examples. These texts might have been written by members of Fashion Revolution (with verifiable and reputable experience and expertise in the field, of course), as well as by other academics and renowned organizations such as the United Nations.
With those Study Materials, which our team will carefully organise in sections so that information is easy to find, we will invite volunteers to join a series of Edit-a-thons. 2 Edit-a-thons will focus on uploading and expanding the content of the Volunteer Study Materials, and 3 Edit-a-thons will be destined to translating the new articles into various languages.
At the time of this presentation, Fashion Revolution Global Network has already approved a project to create 100+ non-encyclopedic articles (such as tutorials) on the wiki appropedia.org (aka “the sustainability wiki”), so 11 the team members of this grant project are already gaining training and experience on wiki software and editing practices, experience which will then help us complete this grant project successfully.
Project goals
editWhat are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
- Create the resources needed to gather people that are interested in contributing to the development of this area (categories, WikiProjects, templates, etc).
- Train approx 180 students and educators from fashion universities in Argentina so that they can create and improve the Wikipedia articles related to sustainable fashion.
- Identify and train Student Ambassadors so that they can get empowered and become leaders, to impart the knowledge they have acquired during the project amongst their universities and communities.
- Translate the main resources into other languages. Train approx 20 students and educators from translation universities and institutes in Argentina so that they may translate the articles into other languages. Get in touch with other countries that make up the Fashion Revolution Global Network so that they too are able to translate the articles into their own languages.
Project impact
editHow will you know if you have met your goals?
editFor each of your goals, we'd like you to answer the following questions:
- During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
- Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)
For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (i.e. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Question #1
- Create the resources needed
- Number, quality and activity in the WikiProjects created or revitalized
- Train students and educators from fashion universities in Argentina
- Number of people trained and taking part in the WikiProject
- Number of people that created articles
- Number of articles created
- Number of articles edited
- Number of universities contacted and partaking in the project
- Identify and train Student Ambassadors
- Number of Student Ambassadors trained and active
- Translate the main resources into other languages
- Number of articles translated
- Number of translators contacted and active
Question #2
When we finish, this project will continue benefiting the Wikimedia community mainly in these ways:
- Student Ambassadors
- Active and well-developed WikiProjects that will serve as a useful resource for future editors interested in the topic.
- Hundreds of volunteers from the 92 countries of the Fashion Revolution Network continuously editing the articles created in English and in Spanish and translating them into their own languages. We would also broadcast this project from the various social media Fashion Revolution platforms so as to invite people to join the Wiki Meets Sustainable Fashion project.
Do you have any goals around participation or content?
editAre any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable.
- 7 Edit-a-thons
- 200 total participants
- 200 newly registered (mostly female) editors
- 500 pages created or improved

Risk assessment
editWhat factors might affect this project?
- COVID: Given that this project is to be done fully online, COVID would not be getting in the way of our executing the project.
- Inflation: Our country has on average a 50% inflation rate. This means that volunteers migt not be able to commit in the long-term if they find themselves in a situation in which they need to work harder to make ends meet. However, we have taken measures to prevent Inflation from getting in the way of us reaching our goals:
- We have allotted part of the funds for Management and Organising Edit-a-thons. This ensures that there will always be people taking care of the project.
- We have organised a series of short Edit-a-thons (less than a day long), so volunteers do not have to commit in the long-term
- Volunteer participation: In case our contact with the Universities listed above does not produce the amount of volunteers we have estimated, we have a back-up list of Universities we can contact. We are not thinking of contacting all at the same time in case the opposite happens —in case too many volunteers show up and our project risks getting bigger than we have anticipated. In any case, if contacting more Universities still does not produce a great amount of volunteers, it would not be a problem. We are asking other Fashion Revolution teams to spread the word about our Edit-a-thons in their social media platforms.
Thank you for your suggestions! Here’s what’s new
editWe have modified our proposal according to the kind suggestions we have received during this review period.
- We have reduced the scope of the project.
- We have reduced the amount of money required to carry out this project from USD 20,000 to USD 19,764.5. Out of this final amount, USD 477 are aimed at covering any foreseen expenditures.
- We have modified the way we displayed the expenses, so that they better reflect what amount would be allotted to each purpose.
- We have categorised our project as a series of short Edit-a-thons; as opposed as a continuous tutoring of a certain amount of volunteers that would be expected to partake in the project for a number of months.
- We have divided the Edit-a-thons into categories: Content Creation, Content Review, and Translation.
- We have added Translation Universities to our list of Universities to contact, so as to ensure that we would be able to translate the articles created.
- We have reduced the amount of languages into which we will try to translate the contents, from 68 to 5.
- We have reduced the amount of Fashion Revolution teams we will contact to ask for assistance in the translation process, from 94 to 26.
Endorsements
editDo you think this project should be selected for a Project Grant? Please add your name and rationale for endorsing this project below! (Other constructive feedback is welcome on the discussion page).
- Support. This is a very cool project, well organized, has a clear impact and the organization seems to have a broad global network to collaborate with. Back in the day I translated the whole course of Wikidata for GLAM institutions that WikiEdu did to Spanish, but I never used it (or reviewed for what it matters...) so if you find that any of that could be useful, I'm happy to share it with you to design your own training materials around how to use Wikidata. I'd also suggest you get in touch with the Wikifeministas group, they'll probably want to support this, and to check out the es:Wikiproyecto:Mujeres, we have at least a couple of tabs at Artículos faltantes that are about female fashion designers.
