Grants:Project/Wiki In Africa/Wiki Loves Women 2017
Project idea
editOver the last 15 months, Wiki Loves Women has been initiated and conducted through the support and partnership of the Goethe-Institut. Although the institutional support of the local Goethe-Instituts will continue beyond this initial phase, the financial support from the organization will come to an end in March 2017.
It has taken 10 months for the four project teams and individuals to get traction and gain momentum. After months of preparation, training and planning, they are now holding a steady course, working fruitfully, actively and consistently with their partners, teams and community. We want this to continue while the project team finds funding for the next phase of the project.
An additional element we would like to add at this phase: the integration of text from open licensed UNESCO gender equality reports and publications which UNESCO has recently employed a contractor for 10 weeks to identify suitable text from. The information about gender equality across Africa would be integrated into existing articles, or have new articles, the work is being coordinated on this page.
Note: This project is still active until the end of March 2017. Although we can supply interim figures and links with regards to impact of the project so far, the full report on the project and and its metrics are not yet final. In the meanwhile, the specific actions of the project and those in the countries are described below.
What is the problem you're trying to solve?
editThe particular problem
- The current phase of the project is coming to an end and funding is required to
- Maintain the current momentum by existing countries,
- Provide the space for the team to raise funding for and to prepare the next countries and partners for the next 12-36 months of the project
:* Integrate recent open licensed UNESCO reports and publications into relevant existing Wikipedia articles and, where necessary, create new articles to ensure contextual understanding of gender equality across Africa.
Goal of the Wiki Loves Women project:
- Encouraging the contribution of quality information on and about African women to be published on, and made widely available via, Wikipedia
How it is done:
- Gender inequality is rife across Africa. The Wiki Loves Women project focuses on bridging two significant gaps on Wikimedia projects – women and Africa – both in terms of content about these subjects and in terms of participation by people from these groups. In collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, the project works to encourage the contribution of existing information from Civil Society Organisations and Gender-equality groups to Wikipedia. The donated content will specifically focus on women’s contribution to the political, economic, scientific, cultural and heritage landscape, as well as the current socio-political status of women, in each country. In addition, the project will encourage the activation and support of new and existing editors (both female and gender-sensitised male Wikipedians) in the focus countries.
What is your solution to this problem?
editThe country teams have been working hard to achieve their current momentum. We would like them to continue, while we provide support for the country teams, prime the next group of potential countries, and secure funding for the next 12-36 month phase of the project.
The current achievements of the project are yet to be compiled into a report. From an entirely content point of view, by mid-February 2017 the project stood as follows:
- 713 articles on the English Wikipedia – some of these are stubs (but are being worked on by the teams, others have been shifted due to the present action by Fram’s SvG Clean-up.)
- Two articles became GA entirely through the project:
- Malouma (was created during the Wikipedia 15 writing contest and is now Good Article status.
- Samir Yusuf Omar (existed prior, but was massively improved during the destubathon)
- Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge has been made BA (the equivalent to GA in English). That was one of the articles started during the writing challenge.
- 1148 all together image contributions to Commons (this does not include the event photographs which amounts to 715)
In the meanwhile, the specific actions of the project and those in the countries can be viewed via these links:

- Côte d’Ivoire

- Work in Nigeria can be viewed by this documentary from Germany's 3Sat
On-wiki events have included:
- an initial Wiki Loves Women launch contest to coincide with the #Wikipedia15 celebrations in English and French
- partnership in the Africa Destubathon (results specific to Wiki Loves Women here)
- the upcoming #16WikiWomen translation drive

Project goals
editWhat are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
a) The goals of this grant request are to:
- Provide project and financial security for 6 months for the four existing countries
- Maintain the global, on-wiki and social media communication
- Provide time to apply to grantmakers for funding for the next 24-36 months of the project.
- Research, support and encourage the preparation of a new batch of countries to participate within the project.
- Add specific open licenced reports (provisional list here)to ensure larger contextual understanding of the issues and specific problems that women and girls face across the continent.
b) The Wiki Loves Women project goals If this project is successful then we have:
- Visibility and understanding of the Wikimedia projects: the project activations, events and work with the partners will have significantly raised the level of interest in, and usage of, the Wikimedia projects in these four countries;
- Increased content: a substantial increase in the amount and type of content on the Wikimedia projects about women in four countries in Africa;
This is done by:
- Encouraging donation: Promoting and facilitating the sustainable donation of information, data and media from focus-related suitable organisations (content partners) within the four countries and globally;
- Community development: Providing support and activities to activate, galvanise, and increase the editors within the focus countries by involving content partners, network partners and working with existing editor groups; and
- Facilitating the process: Training, supporting and mentoring between four to eight skilled Wikipedians in Residence (one for each country) as facilitators to achieve the above goals.
Project impact
editHow will you know if you have met your goals?
editSuccess is achieved if local teams have:
- added significantly to the various subject categories in Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata (see expectations below)
- hold around 50 events all together
- obtained and demonstrated significant media visibility of the project at the local and also at the national level
- involved significant new partners
- increased the active membership of their UserGroup, in particular the representation of women, including involvement and responsibilities with regards to the WLW project
- finalized Wikimedia UserGroup status (where relevant), and
- successfully and consistently reported to the project team and the wikimedia community about their activities and results
The project team will be successful if it has:
- secured long-term funding for the project to involve new countries
- provide a final list of countries for the next phase of the project, and whenever possible identified the Wikipedians in Residence(*) (in the form of Usergroups, volunteer groups or individuals) who will work from within that country (all contractual hurdles and other elements cleared and ready to proceed)
- secured 2 main partners per country for the next phase of the project
(*) Each country is different. Each country has a different set of volunteers at differing stages of readiness, capability and capacity. In some countries there are no known volunteers at all, in others, there are self organised groups. Part of the work of this phase is to reach out and establish enthusiasm, capacity and local capability to do the project. This means by the end of this phase, there will either:
- 1. already be Wikipedians or a user group locally. In this case, our agreement with them will be finalized, and they will be able to look for and secure the partners before the project starts;
OR
- 2. there is no known wikipedian or usergroup willing to get involved but a strong case of organisations who are willing to be involved, in which case there will have to be a call to hire the correct people. In which case, all initial approach with the partners in that country will be done with the organising team.
Do you have any goals around participation or content?
editWork done by the existing countries will be run through Metrics. In addition, each team’s bi-weekly and bi-monthly reports will continue.
For this phase, as per the output of the last 6 months we expect a minimum of the following:
- 600 articles on the English Wikipedia
- 8 articles elevated to GA status
- 600 articles on the French Wikipedia
- 2000 contributions to Commons (not including event photographs which is expected to amount to 600)
- At least 500 Wiki Data new or improved entries
- At least 48 events/activities
- At least 20 new active participants
- Attendance and presentation of the Wiki Loves Women project to at least one global wikimedia event (per team)
