Project Plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

The contest will focus on multiple Internet Governance topics, especially related to youth participation. Internet Governance is a field of study that has not been developed enough in the Wikipedia pages, and there’s a visible lack of content about this subject in some of the languages of our contest. Wikimedia institutions are usually the first sources consulted by young people who are getting to know the Internet Governance ecosystem, which has some particular concepts that can generate some confusion for beginners.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

Most importantly, we are going to post our proposal on https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Forum. Besides that, we are also going to reach national social media pages/groups (such as Telegram and Whatsapp) related to Wikimedia, mainly through the members of Youth SIG that are also part of this community or wikimedians who have already worked with us in other Open Internet projects. We also plan to open a Wiki internal website at www.youthsig.org related to this proposal, initially for consultation and then to coordinate with the participants, and we will be regularly publishing news about the Contest in our social media in Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

3. How will you let participants know about the contest? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

The Youth SIG (also known as Youth Observatory) will share the call for participants among its network of members (more than 2000 young people from over 65 countries), through email, messaging applications (Telegram), and social media (Facebook, Instagram), and inviting other Internet Governance Youth organizations to share the contest among their members. We are also requesting help to spread the news with the support of social media channels from our partners like Internet Society and YCIG. To communicate with participants on more complex issues, such as explaining how to use Wikimedia tools, we are going to organize a webinar for newcomers into the Wikimedia world who also happen to be our members or young people familiarised with our work.

4. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Note: Grantees, judges, and other contest leaders are ineligible to receive prizes. Grantees who are serving as judges may not receive gifts through grant funding.

We will request support from well-known members of the youth community who are familiar with Internet Governance matters and experienced Wikipedian experts. Of this last group, we have already invited and received affirmative answers from French, Portuguese, Spanish, and English native speakers. Both of these groups will be part of the judges’ team, together with Youth SIG board members, creating a 3-people judging board for each language. Judges will analyze the writing inputs taking into account eliminatory and classificatory criteria.

Eliminatory criteria are i) participation in all expected Wikimedia Projects (Wikipedia and Wikidata); ii) compliance to Wikimedia standards, especially concerning human right and non-discriminatory texts; (iii) novelty and creativity on at least one of the produced content; (iv) complete translation of at least one medium-to-long article available in other languages; (v) correction or updates made on at least one existing text; (vi) the integrity of the information provided on the website, regarding the contributions made; (vii) relevance to youth participation in Internet Governance; Classificatory criteria are (i) number of contents added or improved in each Wikimedia Project, prioritizing Wikipedia; (ii) selection of trustable sources to elaborate the creative input; (iii) grammar and readability. To avoid overburdening the judges, we tried to focus on more objective criteria for the classificatory analysis, and those that do not fulfill them enough won’t be deeply reviewed to be able to compete for the prizes (for example, adding just the bare minimum of content to fulfill the eliminatory criteria, using dubious sources, or making serious grammar mistakes)

5. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

N/A

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

No, all activities will be conducted online.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

We plan that this is the first proposal of a project of continuous collaboration between ISOC Youth SIG board members and Wikimedia Foundation. If this contest works out as expected, we plan to make new rounds of the contest and eventually expand it to other projects focused on more experienced Wikimedians. The objective would be to draw on youth activists’ energy and engage them in other Openness-oriented communities, besides those they usually work with within the Internet Governance ecosystem. The following projects would require a smaller budget since the digital resources requested on this project would endure for at least one year.

Impact edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:

For photo contests:

  1. Number of participants
  2. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons
  3. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects

For writing contests:

  1. Number of participants At least 50-70 participants expected
  2. Number of articles created or improved - At least 300, considering the criteria.

Resources edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

Our project will be an online experience, so the only resources needed are an online video conference tool for instructions webinars and judges meetings, besides the awards to be given to best-qualified participants. We already have a website and established social media to spread the idea and publish contributions as they are happening,

We also need human resources as reviewers and evaluators, which we have as volunteers from the Youth Observatory and Wikimedia, particularly Wikimedia Brasil. We are a team of around ten people active in the Youth Observatory Board, and three will be selected to be judges. We have also invited three experienced Wikimedians editors who have already worked on related projects. Finally, we invited three youth experts on internet governance to complete the 3-people team of judges in each language.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

Total: U$ 630,00 (or £UR 523,70). All resources will be used to provide awards for winners, transferred through Apple, Amazon, or Google Gift Cards, with a small amount (U$10) reserved for taxes and other values lost on currency conversion from dollars to Euro, which will be returned if not used.

1 - U$100,00 first-place general, one language, selected by all the judges among the winners of each language (x1);

2 - U$70,00 - second place in the winner’s language and first place for the three other languages (x4);

3 - U$40,00 - third place in the winner’s language and second place for the three other languages (x4);

4 - U$20,00 - fourth place in the winner’s language and third place for the other three languages (x4).

Subsequent Change: Not all languages had awardable participation. Part of the remaining resources will be used to pay "consolation prizes" for those that had meaningful participation without fulfilling the eliminatory criteria.
