Project Plan

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

The contest will focus on taking photographs of modern buildings, artworks, memorials, monuments and other objects in the public space that are useful for in Wikipedia (and sister projects) and can illustrate articles about these subjects.

2. How will you let people know about the contest?

People are informed by an announcement/press release, announcements on Wikipedias and banner above Wikipedia.

3. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?

Like with Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Art we have an independent jury that selects the best photos. After that we have a awards ceremony where we reach out prizes to the photographers of the winning photos.

4. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

To ask the local community on Wikipedia for help and possible also organise an edit-a-thon like photo-add-to-articles-session.

5. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

In July 2016 Freedom of Panorama went into force in Belgium. Before that time it was difficult to consider which photos could be uploaded and which not, often resulting in people back holding their photos as there was a risk that the photos would have been deleted afterwards. Now Freedom of Panorama is implemented in Belgium, we now have this full summer the possibility to ask the public to take photos of modern objects and to illustrate Wikipedia. Also we like to organise a photo contest as we have two groups in our local community: writers and photographers. Most photographers are less interested in photographing and wait for a new photo contest to be organised.
During the contest period July-August local volunteers and organisations can organise local photo tours to capture the local buildings, artworks, memorials and monuments.

  2. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons: 2000+
  3. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects: 10%+

  • Because this project is very important for the visibility of Wikimedia Belgium. And because, as an organisation, we appreciate that the new Freedom of Panorame law was voted in 2016; also thanks to the effort and active support of WMBE. Geert Van Pamel (WMBE) (talk) 20:40, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Because it is a project with a low entry barrier, which should allow to attract new contributors SvenDK (talk) 04:28, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
  • This project will help local communities disclose their heritage towards a larger audience and help brigde the knowdlege gap between different generations. The local library of Ternat will as a pilot use this project to engage new users in creating new content on wikimedia. (Hilke Arijs (talk) 16:04, 14 June 2017 (UTC))
