Project Goal edit

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

To engage with students, faculty, and staff of the w:University of California, San Diego, and w:Salk Institute, by working with its Library faculty and staff, and Catering staff, in order to engage with existing editors, and recruit new editors among students, faculty, and staff, during the latter half of its Winter 2020 quarter. To begin this endeavor, we will cooperate with faculty, and staff, to plan/organize, and hold a w:Wikipedia Day event during January 2020 edit-a-thon during w:Women's History Month.

Project Plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

Working with Library faculty and staff, we will select a location within The Library facilities aboard University of California, San Diego to hold an event which will welcome the larger University of California, San Diego, and Salk Institute, community. The event will be comprised of three parts, a class for educators, staff, and faculty, which will assist them to teach students and other members of their communities to become active contributors of various Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, etc.); an edit-a-thon where event attendees will be encouraged and provided the time to create/improve content on various Wikimedia projects; and an ending reception to celebrate Wikipedia Day. Once we have reached a consensus on a location, we will then work with the University of California, San Diego Catering staff to be create a menu of beverages, snacks, and sweets, to entice the community to attend the edit-a-thon. During the event, we will celebrate the 19th anniversary, and teach attendees how to create user accounts, and conduct their first edit(s). Existing Wikimedians will be encouraged to share their past content contributions.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

We will advertise our edit-a-thon on Meetup.com, on Facebook, and on Wikipedia; San Diego Wikimedians User Group, has a pre-established Meetup.com group which it is affiliated with, wikiSoCal, a Facebook page and group, and utilizes Meetup/San Diego. We will work with The Library faculty and staff, we will reach out to residential communities aboard the University of California, San Diego to inform residents of the event. Lastly, we will invite local media outlets of the event through press releases to increase local media coverage of the event.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

We are working to bring in at least 50 new Wikipedia contributors. We will invite these new users to future edit-a-thon meetups held by San Diego Wikimedians User Group, in order to continue to support their growth as users.

Impact edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  1. Number of total participants: 50
  2. Number of articles created or improved (if applicable): 50
  3. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable): 25
  4. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects (if applicable): 5
It is the goal of the event to sign up 50 new users, who at minimum will have each made at least one edit by the end of the event. During the event we hope to be able to document it through photographs, which will be later uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

Resources edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We have resources which were acquired thanks to the grant issued in Mid 2019. As previously stated we are receiving support from Faculty and Staff of the University of California, San Diego, to hold the event. As progress is being made with the librarians, collaboration with "instructors" is being developed through a coordinated initiative led by one of our members. The group hopes this two-pronged approach will result in creating a favorable environment at UCSD for Wikimedia-related activities.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense:

  • Catered food by the University of California, San Diego: $750
  • Facebook advertising: $100
  • Printed materials: $100
  • Miscellaneous costs (funds to cover unforeseen and miscellaneous costs): $50

Endorsements edit

  • This project will help (re) add UCSD as an active campus re. Wikipedia editing. Vahidmasrour (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
  •  Y Excellent concept and looking fwd very much to either a day celebration or full month Jan 1-31 2020 celebration. (Formerly my comment was: "*userID Vid2Vid here and I endorse this. HTML of this site is very broken on smartphone, when using a URL with a .m. for mobile in it and trying Simple vs Desktop mode even in Chrome Android browser.... Very frustrating, fyi, constructive feedback 2600:1700:E680:20F0:ACCF:7B44:9CAC:C16 20:40, 9 December 2019 (UTC)..") -Peter a.k.a. Vid2vid (talk) 20:42, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
  • The opportunities to begin and grow new inclusive user groups in UCSD and other San Diego area schools are phenomenal. With the team here, we have the capacity and commitment to do the legwork for making edit-a-thon events like this possible. Key to the success is some form of support from Wikimedia Foundation. Support for this rapid grant proposal would make it possible for us to take a big step forward. DrMel (talk) 07:39, 10 December 2019 (UTC)
  • As one who helped germinate this idea, I endorse this proposal. It is our hope that we can grow the content contributors within the University of California, San Diego, and within the San Diego region at large.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 18:49, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
  • This looks very good. My one concern is the cost of food, which looks a bit high. Are you providing a complete meal to each participant? LadyofShalott (talk) 21:06, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
  • good follow-up to maintain momentum. Slowking4 (talk) 21:33, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
  •  Y The San Diego user group is inspiring. James and Co have created a vibrant, active user group. Wikipedia Day is important to the community and motivates editors and non-editors alike. Heartily endorse (with a tip of the hat to RightCowLeftCoast, who always goes above and beyond).JSFarman (talk) 01:21, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
