Activities

edit
  1. What movement strategy initiative will your implementation work focus on? Please select one of the initiatives described here.
Increased awareness about the Wikimedia Movement.
  2. What community or communities will be involved in this movement strategy implementation work?
    Bengali Wiki communities
  3. Do you have any specific implementation ideas to support this initiative? Are you aware of any specific ideas in your community? If so, please briefly describe 1-2 of these ideas here.
Yes. The project aims at delivering information about the Wikimedia world in the Bengali language to the general people in a combined manner. The Bengali Wiki communities, especially the Bengali Wikipedia community, are growing rapidly. To continue its acceleration, we need to include more and more people from various backgrounds to join us, to maintain sustainability. For this purpose, the most important factor here is to disseminate knowledge about the Wikimedia movement. Wikibarta (Loosely translated as 'News of Wiki'), an online magazine for the Bengali Community, shares news about Wikipedia, its sister projects, and all sorts news regarding the Wiki-movement happening around the world in the Bengali language. It published its first issue on April 14, 2018 (the first day of Bengali New Year). It has published a total of 9 online issues till now. Since the beginning, Wikibarta has been conducting interviews of national and international Wikimedians (link to the interviews), Wikimedians from both the Bengali community and outside of the Bengali communities have written articles on this magazine. They shared their experience of the journey. News on national and international events has always been published here. We have also got university teacher's articles about the importance of Wikipedia in the education sector. Tutorials on how to edit have also been published in Wikibarta.
For organizing events or doing any collaborative work, often the lack of updated knowledge about Wikimedia movement becomes the prime obstacle to go ahead. Many people don't have any idea about the movement, and it's not easy to disseminate updated and quality information within a few minutes without delivering them some good resources to start with. In order to reach a wider audience, having a printed version of the magazine can contribute to eradicating this problem. It will be an imperative step to make sure that more and more people know about the movement, which is not limited to only the people who are already engaged with the movement, but also opens door to make awareness to the potential contributors as well as friendly organizations and partners of ours in various projects. In order to accelerate the progress on Bengali Wiki projects and for increasing sustainability, this initiative shall also help us for future collaborations as Wikibarta can be a wonderful place to have a glimpse of the worldwide movement. It holds the potential to act as a key to include more and more people with adequate knowledge about the movement and find potential collaborators to thrive our activities.
  1. Please describe your specific activities below to develop a draft implementation plan. What will you do to support your goals to implement this initiative from movement strategy? If possible, please provide a general timeline for these activities. When will they begin and how long will your activities take?
The publication will be a digest of the previous 9 issues of Wikibarta, along with some new articles on the Wikimedia Movement. It will consist of the most important and timely articles, interviews, news published in Wikibarta. Following the acceptance of the grant, the editorial board of the magazine shall select those articles and start preparing them in a digest. Then the magazine's printing works shall be started. We hope everything will be completed within 4 months.
  2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal?
The Bengali community has been informed here.
  3. How will you keep your community updated about progress and outcomes for these activities? Who will be responsible for communicating these updates? Please add the names or usernames of these individuals below.
Wikibarta will continue its publication on the online platform as it is doing right now and the printed digest copies shall be delivered gradually. User:Tarunno and User:ANKAN shall be responsible for this.
  4. If you are organizing community discussions, what is your facilitation plan to support productive discussions around movement strategy implementation? Please also provide a link to a Friendly Space Policy that will be implemented to support these discussions. If you are not doing these activities, please write N/A.
    N/A
  5. If you are requesting funding for online tools or services to support participation, please describe these services and how they will be used. If not, please write N/A.
    N/A
  6. If you are translating any materials, in what languages will you be supporting translation? Who will be responsible for doing the translations? If not, please write N/A.
Translations shall be done when necessary, but that will be performed voluntarily.
  7. What other roles are important for these activities? Please describe these roles and provide the usernames or names of who will perform these roles.
The preparation of the selected articles is necessary, User:ANKAN shall be responsible for that.
  8. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined in the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:
    No.
  9. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
From the experience of publishing 'Wikibarta' for more than 3 years, after the publishing of every issue one consistent question we always get, "Is there any printed copy available for this?" So, it is more than fair to say that there is a good demand for printed copies.

Outcomes

edit

After your activities are complete, we would like to understand the draft implementation plan for your community. You will be required to prepare a document detailing this plan around a movement strategy initiative. This report can be prepared through Meta-wiki using the Share your results button on this page. The report can be prepared in your language, and is not required to be written in English.

In this report, you will be asked to:

  • Provide a link to the draft implementation plan document or Wikimedia page
  • Describe what activities supported the development of the plan
  • Describe how and where you have communicated your plan to relevant communities.
  • Report on how your funding was spent

Your draft implementation plan document should address the following questions clearly:

  • What movement strategy initiative or goal are you addressing?
  • What activities will you be doing to address that initiative?
  • What do you expect will happen as a result of your activities? How do those outcomes address the movement strategy initiative?
  • How will you measure or evaluate your activities? What tools or methods will you use to evaluate your activities?

To create a draft implementation plan, we recommend the use of a logic model, which will help you and your team think about goals, activities, outcomes, and other factors in an organized way. Please refer the following resources to develop a logic model:

Please confirm below that you will be able to prepare a draft implementation plan document by the end of your grant:

  •   Support I hope it will increase the activities of Wikipedia and Wikimedia movements among Bengali speakers. — RiazACU (talk) 18:14, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
  •   Support I recognize and understand the need to have printed paper materials, and I like that this project has as its goal publishing Wikimedia stories that the Bangla community has already written. Publishing projects like this are safe to do and likely to have the intended result of communicating to audiences which otherwise either would not have access to this information, or who would take it more seriously if they have it in paper media. This publication was established I think in 2018 and I had noted that the community was planning the publication at the time. Now that 3 years have passed this publication is a record of chapter history and great to show anyone to establish the reputation and legitimacy of Wikipedia and this chapter in the region. In addition to the paper publishing another product will be PDF copies of the magazines which in many relevant circumstances are easier to share than the URL to the online HTML copy. Overall, this is a good project and precedent and having access to these publications will make outreach in the region easier for everyone at a time when the community is mature enough to take advantage of this.
