Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

As the competition is a Slovakian version of the Wiki Science Competition, the focus is on multimedias with topic of science.
In previous years, there were several editions of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo competition in Slovakia, which collected many great pictures and participants enjoyed it. But the monuments themed competition has a disadvantage of focusing only on the past, usually several generations ago. To balance this, we are organising a competition to focus much more on the present, even partly on the future. To be clear, it is great to focus for some time on the past, but it is bad to focus exclusively on the past.
Additionally, science themed competition provides great way to support the image of and interest in science for public. More interest in science helps to create a knowledge society, which is much more likely to join Wikimedia projects as contributors.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

3. How will you let participants know about the contest? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

  • CentralBanner (or alternatively we will ask for local SiteNotices and AnnonNotices)
  • contest infopages in Slovak Wikipedia and Commons
  • contest website
  • Village Pump in Slovak Wikipedia and Commons
  • Facebook page of PreWiki.sk
  • paid ad campaign
  • partners will be asked to inform in their channels
  • we work to receive an auspices from Slovak science organisations and will ask them to inform in their channels

4. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Note: Grantees, judges, and other contest leaders are ineligible to receive prizes. Grantees who are serving as judges may not receive gifts through grant funding.

The current proposal is (there are 2 simultaneous way, marked by intend):
  1. Preselection by a prejury - quick selection of images of good and higher quality
  2. Jury selection:
    1. Preselection by jury - jury members will select small number of their preferes contributions
    2. Jury discussion - Jury will meet virtually and by discussion will select the final photos
  3. Public selection
    1. Publishing - preselected contributions will be published, probably on our Facebook page, and public will be asked to vote for it (probably by liking)
    2. Votes count - probably by simple count of likes
If there will be special categories for prizes from partners, the judging process will be agreed with the partner.
The process could be adjusted a bit, mostly depending on whether we will use the subtopic categories as the international competition.
Prizes are planned to be gift cards, sent to winners electronically.

5. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

After the uploading period, all participants will be asked to add their contributions to articles in Wikimedia projects.
In the article for public after the competition we will call public to add the competition contributions to articles.
Depending on the success of getting partners and creating a network of contacts, we may (co-)organise edit-a-thons to use the contributions in articles.
We are considering running the competition Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos, same as last 2 times.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

No in-person events.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

We have been active with the Slovakian public for only about a 1 year, so we are currently not very well known. We hope to stay in contact with people interested in this competition for a longer time and invite them to other activities, events and also for our local fundraising. Asprationaly we want to do a local fundraising in the level when it provides resources for most of our operational and the usual project work.
For that we want to collect emails of interested people. As our current email gathering system, CiviCRM, is experiencing difficulties to work in the competition website, we need to fix it. For now we haven't succeeded. If we will not fix it in a reasonable time, we will turn ourself to a professional help.
