Review your report

Using the first rapid grant, we successfully integrated VideoWiki with Wikimedia Commons, made "Log in via Wikipedia" as the default sign-up process, built the ability to "Export" an VideoWiki article into a WebM Video, and last but not the least, moved to Wikimedia Cloud, thereby transforming VideoWiki from an external project to an a tool that is highly integrated with the Wikimedia environment. This is VideoWiki's second (follow-up) rapid grant proposal to continue the development of VideoWiki. The first grant details can be found at:

VideoWiki (also known as Wiki Video) (https://videowiki.wmflabs.org/) is a tool that allows users to drag and drop images/videos from Wikimedia Commons onto Wikipedia text, thereby visualizing Wikipedia. The goal of VideoWiki is to build a free collaborative multi-media encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It is a proposed sister site which aims to visualize the sum of all human knowledge. The official discussion for proposing VideoWiki as a sister project can be found at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Video.

Project Goal edit

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

VideoWiki's interaction with Wikimedia OAuth and Wikimedia Commons

The goal for the next software development phase of VideoWiki includes:

  1. Improve the editing experience on VideoWiki.
  2. Conduct a community call and integrate feedback received from the wiki community.
  3. Increase app stability and code quality

Project Plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. What are the features that VideoWiki intends to develop using this grant?

VideoWiki cracks all the technical challenges of building a collaborative multi-media encyclopedia by providing features such as "collaborative editing", "auto-updation of articles", "interactive videos", etc. To further develop VideoWiki and make it comply with Wikimedia movement standards, the following key features will be built:
  1. Ability to add animations to images in VideoWiki Editor itself.
  2. Direct Drag and Drop Media Content from Wikimedia Commons Tab instead of searching for Commons content in the search bar.
  3. Fix screen resolution to fit on different desktop screens.
  4. Ability to add multiple Images/videos on 1 VideoWiki slide.
  5. Reduce complexity and dependencies in our codebase to make VideoWiki scalable in the future.

2. Where is VideoWiki currently hosted at and what is the current hosting and compute cost?

VideoWiki is currently hosted in Wikimedia Cloud. Therefore, the (major) compute cost is taken care off. However, minor expenses (approx. $30) such as TTS engine, backups, etc. will be conducted on AWS.

3. Who will be developing the VideoWiki software?

Hassan Amin is the lead software developer of VideoWiki and has been associated with Videowiki for one year. He will be developing the above-mentioned features. All payments to the developer will be contracted via UpWork (a software freelance site) and all payment invoices will be maintained.

Impact edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  1. Number of major features in pipeline completed: 4 Major features
  2. Number of of VideoWiki articles created or improved: 10
  3. Whether revamped the code-base: Yes/No

Resources edit

What resources do you have? Include in-kind donations or additional funding.

  • 1/4th ($500) of the first rapid grant.
  • In kind donation (approx. $150 per month) - WMF Cloud services to take care of the compute (hosting) costs.
  • We already have a software developer who has been working on VideoWiki since the past 1 year. Therefore, there is no need to hire another developer.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  • Software Development Costs - $20 per hour x 90 hours = $1800
  • AWS Costs (TTS Engine) - $30 per month x 6 months = $180
  • Contingency Cost = $20
  • Total Expenditure = $2000
