May Hachem/HerStory Initiative
We launched HerStory in 2016, since then we have been working on different aspects: Women Empowerment, Gender Equality, Activism against gender based violence, and other SDGs like Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well Being, Quality Education, Clean Water and Sanitation, and others. Our aim is to defy gender stereotypes and raise awareness about Gender related topics: Child Marriage, Gender based violence, Cyber bullying, female genital mutilation and Sexual Harassment across the Middle East. We chose Wikipedia as our platform, because it the world’s biggest encyclopedia, where all history is documented and one of the main sources of information for the region. I would call it a modern Historian who keeps an eye on everything and document it for our and the coming generations with a very objective, non-biased, neutral language associated with references and documentation to all the information listed. This is how we work in HerStory. We collaborate with some of UN agencies and embassies, our partners in spreading knowledge. We have a core team of 20 members who manage almost 1000 volunteers. We successfully contributed to 2500 articles under open access license to be assessable to everyone in Arabic on the free encyclopedia. We do not have much content about gender in Arabic, if not at all. This is what we are working on, and more topics to be included in our coming phase of HerStory. It is time to create a contest for HerStory to motivate our 4 years old committed volunteers.
