Activities

1. What is the purpose of the meeting and why is it important to your community?

We would like to meet up at Madrid and organize this event as a side event of the World Pride that will take place in Madrid 23rd of June to 3rd of July 2017. The World Pride is an event that takes place to celebrate the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in 1969. Here the beginning of the liberation of the lgbt movement is celebrated and demands are made to protect the human rights of members of the lgbt community. We want to be part of this event. We also want to write articles on lgbt activists and take picture of the event to upload them to commons. This might likely also include taking photos of activists that will be present at the human rights summit on lgbt rights.

1. In this event lgbt activists from over the world (freshly graduating lawyers, people that are active in organizing pride events in their home countries, etc.) will come together with members of the Wikicommunity in order to learn how to use the Wikiprojects and create content on the pages themselves. This will grant the opportunity for both groups to learn from each other.

2. If applicable, what benefits have you seen from doing this kind of meeting in the past?

   The event is part of the overall "Wikipedia for Peace" umbrella project. We already hosted two three of those events in Austria. The first one was on languages that are in danger of extinction. The second was on environmental activists. The third one was a get together of youth exchange organizers, Wikipedia community members and activists from Europe, Russia and Armenia in order to introduce the idea of Wikipedia for Peace to the participants and come up with new projects and strategies.

It is already certain that another event on the topic of Persecution and refuge will take place in Berlin this summer. Additionally there will be an event in Austria. There will certainly also be an event in Switzerland in 2018.

1. How will you let participants know about the meeting?

   I have already let participants know about the meeting and there are nine people that are interested in coming to the event from Europe, Russia and Kyrgystan. Additionally members from the different parts of Spain will come to the event in order to write in their own languages.

2. How will you keep participants engaged after the meeting is over?

   A lot of the participants are already regularly in contact and active in lgbt movements or other international networks. But this event will make it possible to extend and connect these networks with the Wikipedia community and extend the Wikipedia community with the input from their networks.

It is really important also to have this event in Spain. Spain is one of the most lgbt friendly countries on earth and at the same time a deeply religious country. How it was possible to have this acceptance be developed in Spain will be of crucial importance to other participants from all over the world. Religion is often used as a reason as to why the lgbt community should not be accepted. But Spain shows that religion is no reason for that at all.

1. Number of people who will help organize the event:

I am familiar with organizing these sorts of events as I have already co- organized two other Wikipedia for Peace events and also organized exchanges for Service Civil International. Ruben Ojeda will also support me with organizing the event. He has access to the budget from Wikimedia Spain that they could reserve for this project and he is living in Madrid and has contact within the city of Madrid. Further more I will get support from the initiator of Wikipedia for Peace who is also and administrator on Wikipedia. Overall 3 organizers.

Goals

Considering the fact that up to half of the participants will be new editors and that we don't have access the the venue during Sunday, I would estimate a total number of 2 biographies per person being ameliorated/ translated or newly written. This would amount to 30 biographies in total (quality over quantity). With regard to the impact on Wikimedia commons it depends on whether we will get the OK of the activists to take a photo of them and upload them to commons under a cc-by-sa license. I would estimate at least 20 portraits and then in addition to that photos taken of the actual event. I think that there is not enough material on this subject on Wikimedia commons. When I searched for pictures to advertise the event I did have quiet a hard time and I think additional material showing lgbt activism would add value to commons.

• 188,21 Euros remaining- is it possible to spend this on reimbursement of Visa costs for international participants?

Endorsements

• Support because of prior collaboration with Earlyspatz. This is a complicated proposal and Earlyspatz is still fairly new as a Wikimedia contributor as compared to many others who request grant funding. Still, this user has a history of making in-person events better. In the past Earlyspatz has supported Wikiproject Women Wikipedia Design, which has become an event series that has recurred over several years. This user participated in the Art+Feminism events. It is great to have more help for the Wiki Loves Pride event series. Even if not every detail here is by the Wikipedia bureaucracy I appreciate this person's off-wiki event coordination and their talent for bringing in new audiences for solid event participation. • I support this grant. I think it is an initiative in line with the diversity values of the Wikimedia movement, not only for the participation of volunteers from several countries, but also for editing content and obtaining photographs of the LGBT movement and activists, with the social value that this implies.
