The main goal of this project is to promote the ideas of Wikimedia-related research and Wikidata-based initiatives on open citations in the academic circles. For that purpose, the findings from a research project will be presented at a research conference in front of the leading researchers in the field of behavioural science, and research outreach activities intended for academics and students will be conducted at a higher education institutions. The project underlies a research on "Modelling Behaviour in a Peer Production Economy upon Evidence from Wikipedia", which aims to apply economic techniques to examine the risk preferences and utilities of Wikipedia editors while making decisions about the allocation of time and the nature of their future involvement on Wikipedia. After the project's conceptualisation in January 2020, an abstract was submitted for the Foundations of Utility and Risk Conference 2020 that got accepted in February 2020 and led to the development of this far-reaching research outreach project.
The Foundations of Utility and Risk Conference is a biennial interdisciplinary conference that brings together decision theorists, behavioural scientists, economists, psychologists, mathematicians, management scientists, medical and health scientists, philosophers, statisticians, and other researchers. After the first edition of the conference was organised in Oslo held in Oslo in 1982, the conference was held in different parts of the world and it has eventually grown into one of the most prestigious conferences in behavioural science. Started on the initiative of behavioural scientist Ole Hagen and future Nobel Prize laureate Maurice Allais in 1982, the conference takes place in different parts of the world every two year and it has eventually become one of the most prestigious conferences in behavioural science. This year's conference along with its pre-conference workshop will have prominent academics as keynote speakers, including Graham Loomes, Paul Glimcher, John Quiggin and Larry Samuelson.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

The project will be carried out in Australia during the period from 28 June to 7 July 2020. It will consist of activities that can be divided into two groups. Firstly, lectures will be given about the research on "Modelling Behaviour in a Peer Production Economy upon Evidence from Wikipedia" at research events. Secondly, outreach events will be conducted for academics and students about the advantages of Wikidata as a platform for storing open citations and bibliographic units. A detailed break-down of activities is given in turn:
Outreach activities will include lectures about Wikidata as a useful platform for storage of open data and initiatives aimed at importing open citations and bibliographic units (e.g. WikiCite).

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

The underlying research project is documented on a specific page and it has already been advertised on the research mailing list. The outreach project will be announced more broadly, including other mailing lists and communication with the local community of Wikimedians, because of the larger scope of the planned activities. Academic researchers and students are the main target group of the project. The former were identified as an underrepresented group in the movement and, given the interdisciplinary nature of the conference with primary focus on behavioural sciences, the project aims to surface the idea of Wikimedia-related research in front of top-class academics. The latter constitute an important internal stakeholder with high potential for contributing to future growth of the Wikimedia projects.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

The project will be summarised in a blog post and the concept will be used as a basis for running similar outreach activities in the future. Communication with the people involved in the project will be maintained after its end in the context of research relevant for the Wikimedia movement and initiatives related to open access and open citations.

The research project is being conducted voluntarily with assistance provided from other volunteer researchers and the Wikimedia Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation. The outreach activities will be technically supported by students from the hosting institution.
