Kambai Akau/A Hatch-Tyap-Wikipedia In-person Training Event 2 (Kaduna Special Edition)
After a successful maiden event carried out to recruit new editors to edit on the Tyap Incubator, which has been running for about eleven months now, following its application to get an own domain on December 3, 2020, we the event organizers have decided to host a run-up training event series, as the first one, this time around in the city of Kaduna, to get the momentum increased by encouraging more Tyap speakers to translate into their own mother tongue, Tyap, and enable it gain a domain on Wikipedia while they continue to edit even on the new domain. Tyap is a Nigerian language spoken in the central part of the country, with over 250,000 native speakers and unaccounted number of L2 and L3 speakers and when considered one and sam with Jju (a close mutually intelligible language with a separate ISO Code), would have close to a million L1 speakers.

Project Goal

edit

In this run-up event tagged, A Hatch-Tyap-Wikipedia In-person Training Event 2 (Kaduna Special Edition), we aim to:

  1. Recruit new editors around the Kaduna township area where many Tyap-speaking IT persons are located and hopefully overcome a major challenge encountered in the maiden edition, browsing network challenge
  2. Teach existing editors more editing skills
  3. Add or improve content in the Tyap Wikipedia Incubator
  4. Create more awareness about Wikimedia

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We intend to hold a two-series two-day event sets, just like in the maiden event edition.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

The Nigerian Wikimedia User Community, as well as the Wikimedia Incubator Community would be duly informed via community talk pages. The event would also be published on social media, on our Tyap Wikipedia community groups on Facebook, Telegram and WhatsApp.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

There are Tyap language social media groups, especially on WhatsApp and Facebook where the target population would be reached. Already, there is a Tyap Wikipedia group on Telegram with about 40 members. The target is to reach at least 34 new active editors at this stage, and continue the process of creating an active Tyap Wikimedia Community. These outlets would serve us well, as in the first edition. In addition, our Project Page on Meta-Wiki would be another main meeting point for all participants.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

We have at least three known editors, not all experienced equally, but experienced enough to edit and write articles and capable enough to lead the events. Viz:

  1. Kambai Akau
  2. Zwandien Bobai
  3. Stephen Kalat Jonathan

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We would support participants with a Wifi connection to connect their browsing devices which they would be advised to come with, to. There would also be a brochure containing basic editing commands and an English-Tyap Lexicon to be printed on hard copy, which shall be handed to them to aid their translation work.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

The social media groups, especially, the Telegram group has been of immerse use in helping us maintain correspondence among editors and shall continue to be of great aid in achieving this. Their phone lines would be reached on voice calls to encourage them and the proposed Tyap Wikimedians User Group on MetaWiki when approved would equally be of great help to link us altogether.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Yes. We are running an in-person event. The link to the Risk Assessment Tool spreadsheet is here below:

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project would further encourage both older and new editors to contribute their bests in making the Tyap Incubator active, seeing how serious we to have hosted the maiden event and now, this! All aimed largely at saving a minority endangered language like Tyap, as well as challenge other minority languages of Nigeria and the world to protect their dying heritage.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 2
  2. Number of participants: 20
  3. Number of new editors: 34
  4. Number of articles created or improved: 40-50
