This series of translate-a-thons, photowalks, and talks will be part of the #WikiForHumanRights22. An iteration of last year's Wiki para sa Karapatan Pantawo 2021, this project aims to translate to Tagalog and Central Bikol high-quality English Wikipedia articles that tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. This is to increase articles that allow access to neutral, fact-based, and current information around our Right to Healthy Environment. Community visits and photowalks will also be conducted to document environmental issues that are faced by the local community. Lastly, this project aims to improve the accuracy of Bikol Translation Tool by polishing all Bikol translations produced during Wiki para sa Karapatan Pantawo 2021 – 2022 campaign period.

Capacity Building for Editors
- Involve experienced and semi-experienced editors from last year's Wiki para sa Karapatan Pantawo and other related campaigns to play major roles in organizing this year's translate-a-thons, talks, and tutorials to ensure #WikiForHumanRights' sustainability here in the Philippines.
- Provide improved video resources for new editors (on account creation; article creation, editing & translation; citation; image uploading and placing; content translation & modern orthography, etc.)
Project Development
- Increase and improve neutral, fact-based, and current information on climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution (both local and international) in the Central Bikol Wikipedia and Tagalog Wikipedia.
- Document (either via articles, interviews, photos, or video recordings) current local environmental issues in the Philippines as well as efforts made by the community to address and resolve these issues.
- Improve the accuracy of the content translation tool by polishing all translated and improved Bikol articles made during this project.
Local Community Involvement
- Invite new editors from local sectors, allied advocacy groups, and partners especially those that advocate for the protection and rehabilitation of the environment.
- Invite Filipino environmental experts, advocates, and/or activists to impart their local, on-the-ground experiences and efforts in advocating for a healthy and sustainable environment.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one edit-a-thon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- There will be a series of in-person meetups during the Saturdays of April 1 – May 31 in solidarity with #WikiForHumanRights22. This will be comprised of translate-a-thons, tutorials, talks, community visits, photowalks, and documentation. The target dates are April 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 and May 7, 14, 21, 28.
2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.
- A copy of this proposal have already been posted on the community FB group chat of wiki translators and editors based in the Philippines. Most (if not all) of them were part of various edit-a-thons and translate-a-thons in the past. We have more or less 15 – 20 active members so far. Their comments and suggestions were incorporated into this proposal and they are as follow:
- talks on the environmental situations and movements in the Philippines; invite speaker(s)
- basic language translation, proofreading, and modern orthography
- creation of video resources for new editors (and trainers) via OBS software/screencast to be posted on YouTube
- development of the content translation tool using all translated articles in collaboration with University of Helsinki's Language Technology Department
3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.
- All possible online media channels will be maximized:
- on-wiki spaces (community portal, talk pages, banners)
- social media (Facebook pages & groups; Twitter)
- email (Gmail, Yahoo Mail)
- Printed invites and brochures will be sent to experienced editors for mass distribution. We will also display ad posters, brochures, and other publication materials on our partner establishments and venues.
4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.

At least one of the following will be present in each meetup to ensure that the needs of the participants are being taken care of:
- Simcha4 is a volunteer from last year's Wiki para sa Karapatan Pantawo. She contributes to Lingua Libre, Commons, Central Bikol Wiktionary, and Central Bikol Wikipedia. She is a language professor at a local university in the Philippines.
- Sherlock808 was the organizer of Climate Change Translate-a-thon and Wikipedia in the Classroom Module Translation and Campaign. He is also one of the proponents of Open Access Learning Portals in the Philippines which is presently under development. He just finished running a campaign for the utilization of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Toolkit within the Philippines.
- Daramlagon is the organizer of last year's Wiki para sa Karapatan Pantawo. A cultural worker and an environmental advocate, he has helped last year's campaign reach out to partners from different groups and collectives by organizing events that tackle human rights, food security, environmental issues, and the arts. He currently spearheads Language Preservation through Wiktionary and Wikiboses Project and Community Capacity Building which is nearing to achieve its goals. He contributes to Lingua Libre, Commons, Central Bikol Wiktionary, translatewiki.net, Central Bikol Wikipedia, Wikidata and English Wiktionary. He is a translator, lexicographer, and a book editor by profession.
- Users Kunokuno, Brazal.dang, and MaroBos may once in a while help in the facilitation of activities, but due to their location and on-going projects, their participation may be limited.
5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Most of the participants are active contributors in Central Bikol Wikipedia, Central Bikol Wiktionary, Tagalog Wikipedia, and Lingua Libre. It means that they have a native proficiency in using the two target languages. They also have medium to advanced technical skills in using Wikimedia platforms via computer and smartphones.
- For new participants, they are expected at least to know how to operate a computer or a smartphone. Video tutorials (on account creation, mediawiki interface & content translation tool) will be sent to them prior to meetups to ensure focus and smooth on-site activities. One-on-one Zoom/GMeet tutorials may be also requested by appointment via Calendly.
- Not all participants own personal computers or laptops, so we plan to rent at least 5 laptops to be used in the whole duration of the project.
- Regular camera phones will be used for community visits and documentation as we are still finding ways to procure a decent one. All photos will be first temporarily saved in a public Google Drive for collection and curation.
6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- As experienced last year, survey feedback forms are a must in order to gauge the commitment, interests, and motivations of volunteers. Feedback act as an objective basis in informing organizers what events and programs to develop and improve in order to address the needs of the volunteers.
- Also, previous partnerships with allied local advocacy groups in organizing wiki and non-wiki events proved to be fruitful in sustaining the drive and passion of new volunteers. By meeting and conversing with people of different cultures, disciplines, advocacies, and social classes, they in turn broaden their perspectives in relation to the fundamental goals of the Wikimedia movement as a whole. Actually, right after these partnerships, an increasing number of initiatives (comments, suggestions, proposals) have been received from new editors. They now see wikiprojects, such as Wikipedia, not merely as a tedious writing/editing work, but as something truly relevant and important to their immediate real-life community.
- While this project is technically a two-month local campaign, we would like to see it continue and prosper even after the event, year-long if possible. We would like to see new volunteers explore and participate in community dialogues and efforts that advocates for environmental protection and rehabilitation, either on-wiki or off-wiki. To do this, we plan to invite them in our monthly in-person meetups so as provide a tangible community to them, and lessen the anxiety brought about by over-exposure to gadgets and the Internet. We can also do more visits, immersions, and trips to communities. As an output of their off-wiki experience, we will encourage them to make a habit of either translating, editing, or creating at least 3 – 5 articles per month. We will also encourage them to regularly upload photos that document current environmental situations in their respective local communities. Lastly, equipped with a solid understanding and hands-on experiences, we plan to invite them to formulate or organize future wiki campaigns.
7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:
- This project will be a combination of weekly in-person and online activities with 3 – 5 participants per meetup. The number of participants was intentionally lowered down to achieve a more quality output and focused learning (also to mitigate COVID risks.) The target venue is Barakas Cafe, a local coffee shop with a fast internet connection and a conducive ambiance, but we may opt for a larger venue if necessary. A local wiki partner herself, the owner has agreed to the exclusive use of venue during meetups, with minimal rent.
- There will also be a series of community visits, documentation, and photowalks. Target communities to be visited are Pasacao and Naga City.
- Zoom and other online meetings may be set via Calendly, if requested by participants from distant locations or by participants with conflicting schedules.
- Talks and lectures from invited environmental experts and activists will be conducted via Zoom.
8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- This is the second iteration of Wiki para sa Karapatan Pantawo in solidarity with the global #WikiForHumanRights22 campaign. Some setbacks have been faced last year due to insufficient planning, time constraints, and lack of sytematic evaluation, and these are the things that we would like to improve on this year.
- In this light, this project will employ the best practices in conducting translate-a-thon events as discussed in this Meta-Wiki article: Best practices for Content Translation events. As well as the points discussed in the following guides (which we plan to translate to local languages):

- The Five pillars of Wikipedia – important summary of Wikipedia's editing philosophy
- Wikipedia:Verifiability – what to keep in mind regarding the verifiability of information being added to Wikipedia
- Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not – what Wikipedia is NOT, always important to keep in mind.
- Also, Wikimedia tools such as Event Metrics, Hashtags tool, and Stalk toy will also be used to accurately track the progress of the campaign. We will also use a modified version (Google Forms) of this translate-a-thon feedback survey to assess each translate-a-thon. Participants will be required to answer this form before each meetup ends. May 16 – 31 will be reserved for the polishing of articles, over-all evaluation, photo and video recording curation, and reporting.

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 7 translate-a-thons, tutorials, community visits & photowalks (plus one-on-one Zoom calls if requested)
- Number of participants: 20 – 25 participants; 3 – 5 participants per session
- Number of new editors: 5 – 10 new editors
- Number of articles created or improved: 50 – 100 improved and translated articles (Tagalog & Bikol); 20 – 30 photos and video recordings
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 10 – 15 repeat participants

- Here is a link to our resource inventory. These resources were procured and assembled in the past through community efforts by partners and volunteers, which are to be used solely for wiki campaigns, activities, and partnerships.
- Simcha4, Sherlock808, Daramlagon are the main organizers for this project, with Virusnecross and Tinagoblumentritt as its co-organizers.
- User:Daramlagon will be the one to handle the initial preparations, call for participants (off- and on-wiki platforms), video resources, and short talk on basic translation and orthography.
- Simcha4 and Sherlock808 will be in charge of the PR & invitation materials and meetups facilitation. They will also be the one to coordinate the community visits.
- Lastly, Virusnecross and Tinagoblumentritt will handle the logistics, evaluation, and financial reporting.
- The number of core members was increased to five to distribute the workload.
