Project Goal
editWhat will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative
The primary outputs of this project aim to foster awareness and active engagement with Movement Strategy initiatives within the Wikimedia Community Kilimanjaro. The project is designed to propel our community towards positive transformation, capitalizing on the involvement of new editors and groups eager to participate in the Movement Strategy. The following outputs are expected to contribute to these goals:
Heightened Awareness and Engagement: The project will successfully raise awareness among community members about the key tenets and objectives of the 2030 Movement Strategy. By ensuring that our members are well-informed and engaged, we will be actively advancing the Movement Strategy within our community.
Facilitated Change and Growth: Through the cultivation of a support group within the community, we will create a driving force for both social and digital transformation. This will result in improved outcomes for our community members, aligning with the Movement Strategy's focus on growth and development.
Enhanced Volunteer Retention and Engagement: By offering enriching experiences and tailored programs, the project will contribute to higher levels of volunteer retention and engagement. This directly aligns with the Movement Strategy's aim to empower and mobilize volunteers for sustained impact.
Empowered New Editors: The project's emphasis on motivation and support will assist in retaining new editors, helping them overcome challenges they might face. This support will be extended through one-on-one mentorship opportunities, both in person and online, promoting a nurturing environment for growth and learning.
Inclusive and Welcoming Community: An important aspect of the Movement Strategy is fostering inclusivity and creating welcoming spaces. By promoting an inclusive culture, the project will significantly improve the experience of community members, thus furthering the Strategy's objectives.
Network Strengthening: The cumulative impact of these outputs will result in the development of a stronger Wikimedia Community Kilimanjaro. A well-informed, engaged, and motivated community will undoubtedly contribute to the overall advancement of the Movement Strategy
- What specific Movement Strategy Initiative does your project focus on and why? Please select one of the initiatives described here
- Emphasis on Skills and Leadership Development Investment
While this project encompasses various initiatives, its central focus lies on a pivotal undertaking: the strategic investment in Skills and Leadership Development.
Adopting a Global Approach for Local Skill Development: Data Gathering, Peer Matching, and Mentorship
The primary strategic endeavor of this project centers around a comprehensive initiative: the investment in Skills and Leadership Development through a global approach, encompassing data collection, peer collaboration, and mentorship.
This initiative has been chosen with careful consideration, as it aligns with our overarching goals of fostering a collaborative environment conducive to mutual learning, enhancing on-wiki engagement, expanding community outreach, evaluating Volunteer Motivations and Management strategies, encouraging Advocacy efforts, and fortifying Communication channels. Our aspiration is to cultivate a community of proficient individuals, equipped with advanced competencies and effective leadership skills. By elevating the level of expertise and leadership within our community, we are setting the foundation for sustained growth and development.
This focused investment serves multiple purposes. It establishes robust communication channels, facilitating interaction, collaboration, and mentorship among community members. The availability of comprehensible resources in our native language further enhances accessibility and ensures knowledge dissemination. Furthermore, aligning with other initiatives, educating our community members on codes of conduct contributes to maintaining a healthy and productive working atmosphere.
A significant outcome of this endeavor is the cultivation of capable leaders. By training a broader pool of individuals for leadership roles, we can mitigate burnout, ensuring our leaders are better equipped to support and guide our community. Moreover, this effort introduces community members to valuable Learning platforms such as Wikilearn and Let's Connect, promoting continuous growth and knowledge-sharing.
Project Background
edit- When do you intend to begin this project and when will it be completed?
- We planned starting by 1st November and complete it by Frebruary 2024
- Where will your project activities be happening?
- Kilimanjaro Tanzania
- Are you collaborating with other communities or affiliates on this project? Please provide details of how partners intend to work together to achieve the project goal.
- Building Leadership through Mentorship and Knowledge Transfer
Our strategy involves inviting experienced Wikimedians, Let's Connect Sharers, Coordinators from the Wikimedia communities around Tanzania, and members of the Wikimedia community Kilimanjaro for a comprehensive mentorship and knowledge-sharing endeavor. This initiative constitutes a substantial investment in leadership development.
To foster an environment of shared learning and growth, we will establish dedicated peer spaces for our community members. Additionally, Let's Connect Sharers will play a pivotal role in encouraging community members to actively participate in peer learning opportunities. This collaborative approach aims to nurture valuable skills within our community, propelling us towards enhanced proficiency and engagement.
- What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?
- Addressing Challenges and Seizing Opportunities
The specific challenge our project aims to address is the need for a greater number of well-trained individuals who possess the skills required for sustainability. We also aim to empower community members with the essential abilities to collaborate effectively, communicate proficiently, and participate in decision-making and governance processes.
Within our community, a significant portion of members remains disengaged from vital discussions. This lack of involvement indicates that many are unaware of the opportunities that the Movement Strategy offers. Even if they possess awareness, they often lack the know-how to participate effectively. Discussions related to skills development and increasing awareness about the movement are paramount, yet these conversations have not sparked active engagement among a considerable segment of our community.
- Educational and Engagement Approach
To address this challenge, our project's primary goal is to educate community members about Movement Strategy initiatives and to inspire them to seek their own Movement Strategy implementation grants. It's important to note that approximately 80% of our community members currently lack awareness about the MSIG grant and its application process.
- Translation for Accessibility
To improve accessibility and understanding, we intend to translate the untranslated Movement Strategy pages into Swahili, our local language. This translation will make the content more approachable and comprehensible for all community members.
- Anticipating Positive Outcomes
As a result of our efforts, we anticipate increased participation in Movement Strategy initiatives. This active involvement will not only extend to community members participating in Movement Strategy Processes but also contribute to digital and social transformation within our community.
- Concrete Deliverables
By the project's conclusion, we anticipate that at least 4 individuals from our community will have submitted proposals for Movement Strategy implementation grants. This outcome will serve as a tangible testament to the success of our educational efforts and our commitment to fostering engaged, skilled, and proactive community members within the Wikimedia Community Kilimanjaro
- Does this project aim to apply one of the examples shared in the call for grants and if so which one?
- yes, Community engagement
