Project Goal edit

What will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative

Navigating the Wikimedia platform especially the Igbo Wikitionary platforms and it's many features can be difficult for new and old contributors without explicit guidance. Newcomers and older editors often struggle with understanding the Wiktionary and Wikidata lexeme interface, how it works, how to Navigate and easier ways to describe words on the interface. Also there are challenges on limited Resources like video tutorial and slides with proper guidance on how to leverage the Wiktionary and wikidata lexemes project in increasing Language and knowledge visibility. These significant barrier towards attracting new users and and language contributors on the Igbo Wiktionary have lessen the documentation of contents on the Igbo Wiktionary and Igbo lexemes, these significant barriers prevent growth and participation. Providing guidelines and resources support the movement commitment to multilingualism, as It will help advance knowledge Equity and bridge barriers preventing community members from contributing to free knowledge. The aim of this project is to get more community members and language researchers attracted to contribute through training Linguist, community members and language researchers on navigating the Wikimedia interface with much focus on Wikitionary and Lexeme, creating easy to understand Resources and guidelines on easier ways of forming words in Igbo language. These would help in increasing the reach and discoverability of Igbo Contents by documenting easy to find documentation resources, training on how to Navigate the interface as navigation is a technical barrier that needs more attention to. To get more community members and language scholars attracted to contribute, there is need to have a nice user experience and guiding resources, it is one of the key thing if we talk about diversity and sustainability. Improving users experience through training on interface navigation and providing Resources can help grow content, diversity and participation.

What specific Movement Strategy Initiative does your project focus on and why? Please select one of the initiatives described here
Recommendation #2, initiative 13

Resources for Newcomers

We choose this initiative due to the fact that the platforms for describing all words in every language has low contributors especially the Igbo Lexeme project and the Igbo Wiktionary interface since it left the incubator and we did some research on Wikimedia commons and through physical trainings,we found out that it has just a slide on Wikimedia commons which was documented in 2018 before it left the incubator, and improving or enhancing the Wikimedia platform involves making it more friendly for newcomers by providing them with better resources. Newcomers often struggle with understanding the Igbo Wiktionary interface and there are less learning Resources on how to contribute to the Wiktionary and lexemes including training on Igbo word formation. We plan to leverage the Strategic directions: Knowledge Equity and Knowledge as a Service to Train Community members, creating motivating Resources that are easy to find and navigable for both newcomers and old ones. These Resources would be made available in Igbo language and Simple English that are easy to understand and translate. These will involve Slides, video tutorials, pictorial guidelines. These resources would have pictorial guiding interfaces to be documented on Wikimediacommons that would help them independently learn and navigate. providing these resources and giving them training will encourage them to always contribute.

Project Background edit

When do you intend to begin this project and when will it be completed?

we propose to start the project on 30th November 2023 -30th May 2024

Where will your project activities be happening?

Online on Zoom and In person in Nigeria involving linguistics department in tertiary institutions in Igbo community like Anambra State University Igbariam, Anambra State Politechnics, Mgbakwu, Imo State University,IMSU and Alvan Ikokwu College of Education.

Are you collaborating with other communities or affiliates on this project? Please provide details of how partners intend to work together to achieve the project goal.

This project will be done in the Igbo Community. we will involve Linguistics Departments in four tertiary institutions within the Igbo Community so as to achieve the project goal. This linguist will assist in increasing contributors on the Igbo Wiktionary and Igbo lexemes as they are experienced in language research and Documentation.

What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?

Imagine a world where every community members can contribute or document the sum of all human knowledge, imagine a world where all community members has access to the sum of all knowledge readily available for them to use, search and reference in their language studies. As we grow as a platform that would serve knowledge to all in Many formats,it becomes a vital approach to advance the infrastructure and abilities needed to contribute and access information and guide our Community members through technologies. We want to leverage the strategic direction for goals set for 2030 (Knowledge Equity and knowledge as a Service)that state that the Wikimedia movement will focus on knowledge and communities that structures of powers and privilege have left and that the Wikimedia platform will be a platform that serves knowledge in many ways (Research, documenting, Reference etc) to train our community on:

Navigating and documenting on the Wikimedia platform: We will train community members, linguist and language researchers from tertiary institutions within the Igbo Community on how to navigate the Wikimedia interface with much focus on Igbo Wiktionary and lexemes. We are going to explore how to search, how to link words in Igbo Wiktionary to English Wiktionary, how to create and describe words including word formation processes, how to add audio pronouciation using the lingue libre tool and how to add images to concrete words on the Wiktionary interface.

Bridging knowledge inequity: For us to gather the sum of human knowledge,we must include everyone especially new voices in the movement. This will help bridge knowledge gap in contents by involving our community in creating contents and resources for easy documentation. To encourage knowledge equity, there is need to train community Members on how to create new words using language specific guidelines.

The Inclusion of local knowledge: Improving users experience on documentation and how to leverage the Wiktionary and Lexeme interface in knowledge acquisition is vital as these platforms constitute collection of knowledge vital in language preservation, also including local knowledge and capacity will diversify the Wikimedia movement which supports the movement commitment to multilingualism.

Creating Resources/Manuals on how to edit the Igbo Wiktionary and lexemes: We will produce Editing video tutorials that are easy to understand and accessible in Igbo language as well as slides with easy steps of the projects interfaces.

Does this project aim to apply one of the examples shared in the call for grants and if so which one?

Yes, Community Engagement

Outcomes edit

After your activities are complete, we would like to understand the draft implementation plan for your community. You will be required to prepare a document detailing this plan around a movement strategy initiative. This report can be prepared through Meta-wiki using the Share your results button on this page. The report can be prepared in your language, and is not required to be written in English.

In this report, you will be asked to:

  • Provide a link to the draft implementation plan document or Wikimedia page
  • Describe what activities supported the development of the plan
  • Describe how and where you have communicated your plan to relevant communities.
