Part 1 Understanding your work

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

Description of how our activities and strategies were implemented

Launching of the Yoruba oral tradition project

Our activities and strategies were subdivided into six broad categories and implemented through some critical actions, which included effective management of projects by competent and experienced members of our community, communication flow, collaboration with academic institutions, mission-aligned organization and other Wikimedia affiliates.

GLAM initiatives

We sustained our work on the Yoruba Oral Tradition Project, and this year, we worked on the "Audiovisuals of Yoruba Deities" to document the Yoruba deities. This is part of our continued efforts to promote and document the oral knowledge of the Yoruba culture and preserve it for both historical and educational purposes.

Contents generation

Our content generation activities were broadly divided into campaigns, contests, edit-a-thons, and drives. We organised a series of contests and campaigns to create content.

Capacity building

We organised various capacity-building trainings and sessions to help both new and existing members of our community build capacity. These were both online and offline events.

Outreach and advocacy

We sustained our outreach programs and advocacy work and collaborated with several academics to improve the quality of contributions to Wikimedia projects. The donation of our audiovisual works to academic institutions helped us bridge the gap between the Wikimedia community and academia.

Partnership

We partnered with numerous mission-aligned organization and donated our works to academic institutions. But our partnership with the International Centre for the Yoruba Arts and Culture stood out as it has now resulted in the review of the current Yoruba language orthography for improvement.

Conferences and other events

We organised the Celtic Knot Conference 2022, Wikimanian local event, and participated in the Wikimedia Summit in Berlin and the Wiki Indaba Conference in Rwanda.

Strategies or approaches that were effective in achieving our goals

Yes, we would like to highlight several strategies and approaches that have proven effective in achieving our goals. These include the following:

  1. We'd like to emphasize that the general support grant from the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) has continued to work well for our group. Members of our group did not apply for a rapid grant because we already had an approved general support grant, and they were happy to collaborate with the user group rather than applying for a rapid grant for individual projects
  2. Collaborations with other established user groups locally (Wikimedia Nigeria, Igbo Wikimedians User Group) and internationally (Deoband Wikimedia Community)
  3. Partnership with the International Center for Yoruba Arts and Culture worked well for our group and this partnership has resulted in the review of the current Yoruba orthography for improvement. It has further helped us to bridge the gap between academics and the Yoruba Wikimedia Community.
  4. The donation of our Yoruba Indigenous Vocation (Oral Knowledge) audiovisual recordings to academic institutions helped us to connect with academic institutions and helped to increase the number of contributors to the Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects
  5. Teamwork, effective participation of members of our community, and communication flows were all effective in achieving our goals.
  6. The design of training materials for our members is a strategy that has helped them learn how to better contribute to the Yoruba Wikipedia.

For detailed, please see : https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Yoruba_Wikimedians_User_Group_2022-2023_annual_activities

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

Innovations and things we did very differently

Yoruba Storytelling event in Ibadan

We organize a storytelling event in Nigeria as a strategic approach to collecting rich oral knowledge and to recruit expert historians for the Wikimedia movement. This is an innovative approach to diversify content on Wikipedia. Notable storytellers in attendance included Ààrẹ Òpìtàn Ìbàdàn (Chief historian of Ìbàdàn), Laji Abbas, and Bukola Adeleke R. Adégbolá, renowned for her work “Àlàáfin Ajaka.” Among the distinguished storytellers were Tolu Fagbure, veteran actor and comedian Pa. Ayo Ogunsina (fondly known as Papalolo), Faniyi Ifadare Eleripin, Baba Tunde Odunlade (renowned historian, print and textile artist), veteran radio presenter and historian Omisope Olaniyi, Akintola Omobolaji Florence, Bakare Saheed Olawale (jagunmolu èdè), and Adeyemo Ibrahim Ọjọ́, among others. This is the first storytelling event in Nigeria, and we hope to improve on it next year using our learning from this maiden edition as well as the feedback collected from the participants.

The storytelling event received significant attention in the media and has been widely covered by national dailies. Some of which are listed below.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

Review of Yoruba language orthography

We were pleasantly surprised by the enthusiastic response from academia and other stakeholders in collaborating with us to review and improve the current Yoruba language orthography. We were further honored by the attendance of Emeritus Professor Ayo Bangbose, the only surviving member of the previous orthography review committee, at the inauguration of the new committee. We had not anticipated such widespread acceptance of our efforts to review the current orthography. We are proud to lead this initiative in partnership with the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture.

Yoruba Wikipedia 25 million readership milestone

On February 17, 2024, we reported a significant milestone achieved by the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group. The Yoruba Wikipedia reached 25 million views, making it the most-read Nigerian language Wikipedia. This accomplishment was documented and published in the national newspaper, The Nation, and featured in the Wikimedia movement's online newspaper, The Signpost. Our efforts have significantly contributed to the increased traffic and readership of Yoruba Wikipedia.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

One thing we will be happy and proud to tell friend about our work during this fund is our work on the review of the current Yoruba language orthography. The last officially recognised Yoruba orthography was approved in June 1974, and this brought out the standard of writing in the language, which is still in use to this day. Whereas, as early as 1977, major users of the language, especially members of Ẹgbẹ́ Akọ́mọlédè, had started to complain about the errors noticed in the efforts of the compilers and the government.

That started the confusion that today continues to hamper the uniformity in the writing of Yorùbá, as there are some words in the language that have up to three or more forms of spelling. We are happy that we are leading the review after 47 years.

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work.
