Abubakar Tafawa Balewa is one of the oldest public Universities in Nigeria and especially in Northern Nigeria. It has thousands of students across different region and hundreds of teaching and non teaching staff. With my two years in the University, I have been able to confirm that there are no neither group nor union promoting free knowledge or contributing to Wikimedia Foundation project.

Therefore, I started a mini project of inviting and training my mates. I have also sought the assistance of the students Union and the Students Affairs Department and I have been granted the go ahead to organise awareness and training.

Hence, with this grant, I planned to have an awareness and series of training that will not only propagate the contribution to Wikimedia foundation project but also teach the new participants on how to contribute to the projects.

Approaches

Recruiting and Training of Editors: Fifty participants will be selected across different groups on campus. We have already established a connection with the students Union and they will assist in the application and selection process. These participants will be trained on how to edit Wikipedia, Wikidata and uploading pictures on Wiki Common.

2. Adding and Improving Contents: The edit-a-thon would give the participants the chance to positively add contributions to Wikimedia Foundation projects. Especially, Wikipedia, commons wiki and Wikidata.

3. Create a sustainable group: The participants would be used to form the first ever wiki fan club in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The Wikimedia Awareness program at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University will include five key sessions:

1. Awareness Trips: These trips will involve visiting various parts of the university, including academic offices, faculties, lecture halls, and cafeterias, to inform students and staff about Wikipedia and its related projects. Information fliers and handbills will be distributed. The university has shown strong interest in the project, and fifty participants will be selected to join.

2. Online Onboarding Session: New Wikimedia editors will be introduced to the platform and its activities. This session, conducted via Zoom or Google Meet, will cover account creation and basic editing. The session link will be shared publicly.

4. First Physical Workshop: In this workshop, the fifty selected participants will receive hands-on training on how to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects.

3. Second Physical Workshop: Participants will have the opportunity to discuss any challenges they have encountered while editing, with the team providing solutions and guidance.

5. Second Online Session and Edit-a-thon: This session will further develop the editing skills of new and existing editors. Following the training, a three-week Edit-a-thon will be held, with certificates of excellence awarded to winners and participants. Additionally, efforts will be made to create and maintain the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Wikipedia page.

Partners: The university administration is motivated by the enthusiasm of its community to engage with Wikipedia and contribute to its global community of editors. They will grant permission to promote awareness in various campus locations, including lecture halls, cafeterias, and recreational areas. Moreover, the university will provide a conducive and top-tier venue for the training program, thereby enhancing the project's impact.

Students Union: As members of the Nigeria Association of Economics Students at our university, we plan to use our platform within the student body to recruit participants for the training. Furthermore, we will enlist two volunteers from our association to support the program. We also aim to capitalize on our strong online presence for digital campaigns, thereby enhancing the project's outreach and impact.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our project aims to engage the university community, leveraging their intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm. No prior Wikimedia experience is necessary, as we will provide comprehensive training and support. We will recruit participants through various channels, including student unions, writing clubs, faculty offices, and lecture halls.

Throughout the project, my team member and I will facilitate training sessions, ensuring participants grasp the logic and skills required to contribute to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. We will also closely monitor the three-week online edit-a-thon to prevent any unintentional vandalism.

By the project's end, we expect to have made significant contributions to Wikimedia projects, including article development, active editor recruitment, and high-quality photo uploads. To ensure the project's sustainability, we will maintain a WhatsApp group, "Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Wikimedia Community," where participants can discuss Wikimedia-related issues, share updates on upcoming events and workshops, and stay connected.
