Maryam Abacha American University, Kano, is a private institution in Nigeria, named after the former First Lady w:en;Maryam Abacha. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields. Established in 2013.

The change I'm trying to bring

Our project aims to increase awareness and participation of students at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in contributing to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

Main Changes

1. Lack of Awareness: Many students at MAAUN do not realize how important Wikipedia and its sister projects are as sources of information.

2. Limited Contributions: Few students currently contribute to Wikimedia projects, leading to a lack of local knowledge and perspectives on these platforms.

Challenges and approach'

To tackle these challenges, we plan to:

1. Wikipedia Workshops: Organize workshops and training sessions to teach MAAUN students about the importance of Wikimedia projects and how they can contribute.

2. Awareness Campaigns: Run online and offline campaigns on campus to highlight the value of Wikipedia and encourage students to participate.

3. Hands-On Editing: Guide students through editing Wikipedia articles, adding images, and improving content quality.

4. Mentorship: Provide ongoing mentorship to help students navigate Wikimedia platforms and keep contributing after the project ends . 5. Measuring Impact: Track the increase in the number of MAAUN students contributing to Wikimedia as a key measure of success.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. We will host a one day awareness trip within school premises sharing flyers with important information about wikimedia and it's projects. 2. We will be hosting a two-days training program for both staff and students that will help them create Wikimedia accounts, search for articles that need citations using tools like Citation Hunt, and learn various editing techniques to improve Wikipedia articles.

3. Alongside the training, we will also be holding a one-day awareness session within the school to inform both staff and students about the project and its goals.

4. After the in-person training, there will be a two-day online training program to provide participants with ongoing access to resources and help them further develop their editing skills on Wikimedia.

5. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in an edit-a-thon event where they can practice their new skills. Outstanding contributors will be recognized and rewarded with certificates for their active involvement in the project.

6. Those who actively participate will receive continued support to track their progress and enhance the skills they've learned. This ongoing support aims to provide guidance and assistance to ensure participants can effectively apply their knowledge in their academic endeavors and beyond.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

We want to involve both students and staff from Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in our project. Specifically, we hope to engage people from different departments and academic groups at MAAUN.

To get people involved, we will:

Before the Activities:

Spread the word on campus with posters, flyers, and announcements to get everyone interested. Work closely with professors and department heads to reach out to different academic communities and get them on board. Use social media to create a group for the project where we can share updates and connect with potential participants. Have meetings and events in person to answer questions and help people feel like part of the project. During the Activities:

Make the training sessions and edit-a-thon interactive so everyone can join in and be involved. Have trainers and mentors around to give personal help and encourage people to take part. Reward and celebrate those who make a big impact in the edit-a-thon to keep everyone motivated. After the Activities:

Stay in touch with participants to see how they're doing and offer ongoing help. Set up a WhatsApp group for everyone to keep in touch, share their work, and ask for advice. Ask for feedback from participants so we can improve and keep supporting them in areas they need help.
