1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Most teachers around within my community are not acquainted with learning style adapted in this 21st century and this has in so many ways affected learning and learning output. I intend to enlighten teachers on how to inculcate Wikipedia into lesson plans via seminars and workshops. Trainings on how to use Wikipedia as learning resources backing their educational data presented within their learning environment will be inclusive, alongside apt and class based instructional aids.

After the training of Reading Wikipedia in Classroom Abuja, I carefully observed that a lot of students though socially active, are not familiar with the use of Wikipedia;some are not even aware of the presence of Wikipedia and its wonderful and exciting opportunities within their learning fields. Seeing this as a great disadvantage, I intend to educate students on how to be actively involved in Wikipedia;creating, editing and translating data relevant to their course content, encourage learning amongst students which could be in form of individual or group learning in line with their course objectives.

Having covered teachers and students, I believe it will be highly beneficial that collaborations be made and sustained via other learning communities such as educational groups, libraries, non profitable education groups concerned with digital literacy. All these will be achievable via joint projects, edit-a-thons, and outreach to schools and other learning organisations thereby creating and sustaining Wikipedia presence and relevance within the education sector most especially at the community level.

I strongly believe that there is a need to engage communities on Wikipedia activities as it will positively influence the community, teachers and students too.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I intend to mobilize teachers and students from various learning centers with the community and hold a meeting on bettering learning processes within schools and other learning centres and contributing to the growth of Wikipedia. They will also be trained in the different projects of Wikipedia and be guided to do their first editing in each of the projects.

In inviting them, I will work with the secondary section of Denalice International Schools, Dutse-Abuja. I will circulate the flyer among the students of the Youth Wing of Lord of Mercy Prayer and Power Ministry, Dutse-Abuja. I have discussed this with these organisations and they are happy to encourage students to participate. I am confident that these learning fields will be great platforms to invite the target audience because they are grounds used to instill the right values and core education to students and they have recorded good success doing so. The meeting/training/competition will focus on the importance of using Wikipedia in Classroom, benefits of contributing to Wikipedia and bettering the education system within their community. Students and teachers will be trained on basics of Wikipedia which will cover projects on Wikidata, Wiki Commons, The English Wikipedia. The trainings will be well tailored to suit learners age and learning styles so as to enable proper assimilation and to awaken and sustain their interest in contributing to the wiki projects. After each training, there will be edit-a-thon and competition that will concentrate on edits to improve contents on the project trained on, create, translate and improve course contents . During this exercise, participants will be guided by experienced editors. After the series of edit-a-thon and competition, we will encourage participants to continue editing and participating in other programmes like contexts, organise seminars, meet ups and forums in line with the focus of this project in other communities.
3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

I will design and print flyers. The flyer will announce the meetings and the programme that will be held in the school. It will also have a short share information on the importance if the meeting, state the age limit and classes expected alongside teachers and invite interested person to register. The registration will be through text message, whatsapp message and email. 5 – 13 February 2024. It will be distributed to members of the Youth Wing of Lord of Mercy Prayer and Power Ministryand students of Denalice International Schools, all in Dutse-Abuja. It will also be distributed at neighbouring schools within Dutse-Abuja and online. 14 -28 February 2024, all registered participants will be invited to participate. This invitation will provide them the date, time and venue of meet ups. 14 March to 1st September 2024. the 1st meet up of all invited participants will be a 2 days progamme. Other experienced editors will also participate. The trainer will speak on Wikipedia generally and then concentrate on English Wikipedia.. After the training, there will be an edit-a-thon on English Wikipedia which will concentrate on editing existing contents, creating and translating new ones. This edit-a-thon will also be a competition for participants which will last throughout the programme- 2nd and 3rd September 2024. Between the meet-ups, participants will be encouraged to edit in Wikipedia project that they were trained and continue the competition. We will continue to encourage each other in the whatsapp group. We will provide data for participants in the competition. The 2nd two days meet up of training and editing will be on Wikidata.- 16th and 17th September 2024. The 3rd two days meet up of training and editing will be on wiki commons- 30th September and 1st October 2024. At the end, a short questionnaire will be administered to get participants opinions. They will also be urged to continue contributing in all the projects. The competition will end on 15th of October and result announced on the 30th of October and prices given to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th and 5th best participants.

Consequently, the programme will be organized in such a way that there will be intermittent breaks, jokes and group presentation to enable proper assimilation. The programme is also a competition amongst the participants which will give them that urge to push on. In between the different trainings, participants will be encouraged to edit the project that they were last trained on. There will be a WhatsApp group of all participants, the trainers and some other experienced editors. This platform will be used to answer any question and resolve any challenge that any participant may have. In addition to this, a questionnaire will be distributed to participants at the end of the programme which will serve as feedbacks on how the programme was received and how we can better encourage participants to continue contributing. 15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

I look forward to increasing the participation and contribution of senior citizens like me in the movement. We obviously have different perspective from the younger person. We also have more time to spent in volunteer work. Both formal and informal discussions during the project will help all of us appreciate how we can best contribute and how senior citizen will be encouraged to join and participate in Wikipedia. We also need to learn how Wikipedia could continue encouraging more senior citizens to join the movement. It is also important to know the best way to retain their participation.
