1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Wiki Luanda 101 is a workshop that intends to share knowledge on Wikimedia projects and their relevance, and introduce the Wiki Luanda project. Wiki Luanda is an Angolan initiative that seeks to create visibility and representation of marginalized figures from African countries on Wikipedia, with a special focus on Portuguese-speaking African countries in order to create a historical redress that permits the creation of a cultural archive.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

- Bring together people who identify with the Wiki Luanda mission, are interested in redressing the representation and knowledge gap and perhaps already do similar work, such people are more likely to engage, collaborate with Wiki Luanda.

Promote knowledge-sharing about Wikimedia and its relevance. Knowledge is power and if people get a better understanding of what the Wikimedia projects are and know how they can contribute and make a difference, they’re more likely to engage.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Wiki Luanda 101- A workshop that intends to share knowledge on Wikimedia projects and their relevance, and introduce the Wiki Luanda project, featuring 25 participants.

The workshop will have 2 days.

Day 1 will have 3 sessions and will count on the support of two partners who will join the activity online.

1st Session- Wiki Luanda Team: The Wiki Luanda team will introduce the project, stating their case for starting it and how people can contribute to it and stay engaged.
2nd Session- Wiki Editoras Lx: Wiki Editoras Lx will share information on their initiatives and experiences with Wikimedia projects, particularly Wikipedia.
3rd Session- The Black Lunch Table: The Black Lunch Table (BLT) will share information on their initiatives and experiences with Wikimedia projects, particularly Wiki Commons.

Day 1 will touch on global knowledge, representation, how to start a Wikimedia community (organizational tools), best practices, principles for community organization.

There will be time for a short Q&A segment in between sessions and after the 3rd session, participants will get more time to discuss things and engage with each other.

Day 2 will be an online edit-a-thon with the help of our more experienced partners, Wiki Editoras Lx. Participants will get the chance to do something practical, and apply the knowledge, understanding, and interest they´ve nurtured from Day 1. They will be divided in pairs and create or improve pages.

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

To implement this proposal Wiki Luanda is joining forces with Wiki Editoras Lx and the Black Lunch Table.

Wiki Luanda Team User: Jaliya B (coordinator): She is an Angolan writer, poet and performer. Her work explores the experience of being a Woman, Black and African, creating a space where history, politics and anthropology intersect. The poet considers it revolutionary to tell stories to disrupt, destroy, construct narratives, and archive existence. Jaliya is a co-founder of The Archive Room, a digital memory bank and archive that seeks to showcase the stories of the angolan people. She is also a poetry interviewer at Africa In Dialogue, an online interview magazine that archives creative and critical insights with Africa's leading storytellers.

User: Paula Sebastião (coordinator): Pamina Sebastião is from Angola, lives in Luanda. Lawyer and Master in International Law and International Relations, they have been dedicated to activism for several years. Within their activism, they have been part of several collectives and organizations related to issues of gender and sexuality, among them: Ondjango Feminista of which they were part of the coordination team; the Angolan Identity Archive of which they were co-creator and program manager and the LINKAGES Angola project of which they were part of the team of prevention services for key populations (transgender women, men who have sex with men and sex workers) in which they worked around stigma and discrimination. Today they are also on the board of The Other Foundation, a regional LGBTIQ+ organization that also does stigma and discrimination consulting on a national level. Overall, they have worked in an activism focused on discussions of gender and sexuality.

Wiki Editoras Lx (workshop facilitators): Wiki Editoras Lx is an open and informal group of Portuguese Wikipedia editors that has been meeting since May 2019 to edit (create, improve and extend entries/pages) about cis and trans women, people of non-binary gender, and issues of their interest. The group prioritises editing content linked to Lusophone communities, in particular black, migrant, indigenous, rural, Roma, LBTQI+, among others. Another priority of the group is to increase the number of editors and publishers within Wikipedia by opening their meetings twice a month to those who have never edited and want to learn.

The Black Lunch Table (workshop facilitators): BLT is a project focused on the lives and work of black artists. BLT project is aimed at addressing the racial and gender bias on Wikipedia by encouraging Wikipedia articles about African American artists. The BLT brings people together through dialogues about the writing, recording, and promoting inclusive art history.

people who work with representation, inclusivity, online presence, digital archiving

-people who are interested in Wikimedia projects and could be future participants, contributors, and collaborators for Wiki Luanda projects (edit-a-thons, photobooth sessions, roundtables)
- people who are from marginalized and underrepresented communities e.g. women, people who are queer, people with a disability, people who are from a low economic class.

We are looking for people with digital skills, who enjoy writing and are interested in the topics Wiki Luanda wishes to cover.

We hope participants of the workshop will go on to become editors, organizers, volunteers, supporters of Wiki Luanda, and new readers (users) of Wikimedia projects. After the Wiki Luanda 101 workshop, we hope to have planted the seeds to generate interest and motivation to participate in our projects.

We plan on hosting online and offline events where participants will get the chance to network and have conversations that are relevant to the Wiki Luanda project, edit-a-thons.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

Informing participants of the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy to let participants know that there is a code of conduct they have to adhere to. Having a survey where people can voice out their concerns and their experience during the activities, and promoting open dialogue by encouraging people to speak on their experience and suggest things that could be improved.
