Wiki Loves Monuments

Beside the primary goal of the contest to add more illustrations of cultural heritage monuments of Greece, it will also help achieve secondary goals, such as:
- new contributors to Wikimedia projects and a more diverse group of Wikimedians – e.g. the participants are expected to have a background in photography, heritage, and overall erudition, all of which are welcomed traits in Wikimedia contributors
- richer content of Wikimedia projects related to cultural heritage items of Greece – e.g. by having an abundance of images Wikipedians may be motivated to write articles and illustrate them right away
- greater cohesion within the existent community – e.g. there is active interest among people already invested in Greece subjects, to contribute in organizing the project and in using its results on wiki
- Wikipedia outreach – e.g. Wikimedia becomes more visible in Greece thanks to a project that is simple to understand and does not require people to even know what Wikimedia is prior to participation; it also becomes more interesting for heritage protection NGOs of Greece, which may find it useful for their cause to involve
- We did not organize WM last year and we would like to bring it back to Greece, and re-create excitement and visibility for Wikimedia activities.

This contest runs under the umbrella of the international WLM. Some actions include:
- Social media marketing: We plan to use social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to promote the competition and encourage people to participate.
- Press releases to news outlets through known channels
- Technicals:
- We already have a big list of monuments with coordinates, that we import in Wikidata. Most of them do not have a Wikipedia article, nor an image. This will provide a Wikidata-based map and tables that will help participants find monuments close to them.
- We will have a page where people can report errors in the monuments lists.
- The tables will have direct links to the upload wizard adding the WLM id that we created to every uploaded photo to help match with the Wikidata items
- We will keep enough of the previous jury members and add some more from winners of previous contests.
- An award ceremony will be held as soon as we have local winners. This will create more awareness about the contest and Wikimedia.

The target participants are unregistered readers who happen to be hobbyists or pro photographers or anyone who can take a photo with their cell phone and upload it to Wikimedia Commons. They will be invited to participate via the citenotice and through news and social media posts. We will send messages to users who have participated in the past. After the contest we will also send messages to try to use the photos on Wikipedia, and a questionnaire about their participation.
