Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photography competition dedicated to collecting photographs of protected monuments, organized by the global Wikimedia community. In Serbia, this competition has been organized 5 times: 3 times by the local Wikimedia chapter, once by an independent external organization, and once by a group of individuals - local Wikipedia editors, last year (2022). The return of WLM to Serbia last year after a long hiatus demonstrated the desire to continue this project, both from Wikipedia users and participants. Despite the fact that the project was organized on an individual basis, it brought together a group of volunteers and partners who supported the project, which ultimately made fantastic results. As there are still monuments without photographs and Wiki articles, as well as a multitude that need updating, and considering the ongoing enthusiasm and positive spirit surrounding this project, I am willing to take on the organization of WLM 2023 in Serbia.

Although this is a project whose primary goal is to collect photographs of protected cultural assets, there are actually a few other secondary goals that are important for Wikimedia's mission and vision in Serbia. The key strategies for achieving the goals are:

  1. Content enrichment of Wikipedia & its sister projects
  • Collecting media content by organizing WLM competitions
  • Filling the gap in textual and visual content through the organization of an edit-a-thon
  • Improving the quality of content by using new photos
  1. Increasing participation in Wikimedia projects and the volunteers’ diversity
  • Attract new editors and participants to Wikimedia projects
  • Increase the diversity of the community
  1. Supporting and developing the community of Wikimedia volunteers
  • Support for individuals, informal groups and informal communities and their projects
  • Cooperation between groups (users from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons)
  • Increase the community's motivation and awareness
  1. Boosting awareness about WLM, Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and free knowledges
  • Media promotion and support in traditional and new media and platforms
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
  • Review and revise the entire database of existing monuments and compare them with new lists.
  • Updating lists and adding new monuments
  • Make statistics on the coverage of monuments on Wikipedia in the Serbian language. This can be useful for tracking the metrics of how many new monuments have received articles. Also, this information may be useful for one of the next CEE Spring projects, where articles would be translated into other languages.
  • Creating and updating a website and entering all relevant information.
  • Creating guides and instructions with tips on how to take quality photos and how to upload them.
  • Looking for a local GLAM partner.
  • Editing and creating templates
  • Attracting the community
  • Organizing between 3 and 5 photo tours. (making lists and maps, finding sites, organizing tours, etc.)
  • Organization of taming during September and monitoring.
  • Providing technical support during sending.
  • View and select all submitted photos.
  • Selection and selection of jury members
  • Prepare tools for the jury
  • Selection of photos for the jury
  • Selection of top 10 photos.
  • Organizing one or two exhibitions.
  • Send a photo to an international selection.
  • Creating promotional material.
  • Running a PR campaign and cooperating with the media.
  • Regularly sending press clippings and running pages on social networks.
  • Organization of an edit-a-thon (creation of pages and events, monitoring, providing support, etc.)
  • Other ad hoc jobs.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
  • Nikola Terzic - username: Nter25 MSc in Social work, and main coordinator; co-organizer of previous WLM 2022 with organizational experience
  • Username: Sadko (volunteering in photo preselection), WP admin
  • Other volunteers.
9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Bearing in mind that this project has several main goals and layers, the target groups differ. To collect photos: Target users are photography lovers and admirers of cultural heritage. They don't have to be Wikimedians. It is enough that they like the idea of WLM and that they want to participate in the competition. They can be professionals or amateurs who come from different spheres. The target group for the edit-a-thon are existing and new users of Wikipedia in the Serbian language who are willing to write about monuments. For capacity development and strengthening of the movement: Target participants are members of the existing local chapter and other Wikimedians who are not members of chapter but participate in some of the projects and are interested for better connection. The way we will get in touch with all of them is direct communication; sending an email or leaving a message on a talk page, writing on wiki lists: running a media campaign; running a campaign on social media.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

No

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

The idea has been shared with last year's organizing team. Additionally, the local Wiki community has been informed via the mailing list, and the idea has been shared on the Wikipedia Village Pump. The local Wikimedia organization (WMRS) has also been informed. The idea has been well received from all sides, and people who are interested in actively participating in the implementation are gradually coming forward.

Learning and metrics edit

17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

The goal of monitoring the implementation of the project is to continuously evaluate activities, collect data and use resources to improve Wikimedia projects, but also volunteer commitment and involvement. Some of the issues to be addressed are:

  1. Can the project still be organized on an individual basis, as was the case last year, and as is the case in several other WLM organizations around the world?
  2. Is this project effective for encouraging Wikipedia volunteers to update and improve existing articles which do not fall into the most popular topics?
  3. Is this project effective to identify and attract others or members in collecting photos?
18. What are your Wikimedia project targets in numbers (metrics)? (required)

Last year, I worked on localizing the Wiki-Loves-Jurytool, which proved to be very effective and user-friendly. The plan is to continue using this tool, as its interface has been translated into Serbian, creating a smoother working environment for the jury. Additionally, I will utilize other tools such as GLAMours for category monitoring and tracking image usage.
