1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

I want to change the perception of my faculty towards Wikipedia articles by training and engaging them in Wikipedia editing. The common knowledge in my faculty is that Wikipedia articles are not useful for research because they are written by volunteers who may not be subject experts in the particular field. My experiences participating in Wikipedia training and edit-a-thons have shown that the perception of my faculty towards Wikipedia articles is false, though Wikipedia articles cannot be cited in academic research, the articles can direct researchers to the original source materials. Moreover, I will like to prove to my department that contributing to Wikipedia can help to deepen our students' knowledge in our specific subject areas as well as in doing literature reviews. During my training in Wikipedia edit-a-thon, I discovered how to identify reliable articles and use boolean operators to search for articles for academic writing.

Moreover, we will like to equip women in our faculty with the skill to contribute to open knowledge. When female faculty acquire the skill to contribute to Wikipedia, they can write on areas that interest them which no other person can do for them. Digital knowledge gained from contributing to Wikipedia can be transferred to other digital environments. Contributing to Wikipedia will help female faculty to gain more knowledge on digital and research skills. Research output is a requirement for promotion in Nigerian Universities, the skills gained from this program if approved will help female faculty to publish more research papers, which will help them to gain promotion, climb the academic ladder and become visible in the global academic world.

Furthermore, the main mission of our organization is to promote excellent practices among youth. It is therefore our desire to join other Wikimedians to contribute reliable and verifiable information to ensure that the knowledge people gain from Wikipedia articles will lead to excellence.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I will use an experimental and peer learning approach to show my faculty members that many Wikipedia articles are reliable and important for academic writing. In this approach, through a hands on method, I will teach faculty members how to use links and citations in Wikipedia articles to locate the source materials.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Training, edit-a-thon and meetup will be used. I will develop a train the trainer schedule in which I will train some members of the faculty who in turn will train others. After the training, there will be an edit-a-thon in which participants will put their learning into practice. About two weeks after the edit-a-thon, I will organise a meet-up for participants to discuss their experiences during the training and edit-a-thon.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Art+Feminism, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Women, WikiForHumanRights, WikiGap

However, interested people of other sexual identities are welcomed. To attract the underrepresented groups (women and people with disabilities), the program will be publicized at the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), University Women Association (UWA), and Association of Students with Disabilities, UNN WhatsApp platform. The program will also be publicized on the Faculty of Social Sciences and UNN Wikipedia Community WhatsApp groups A dashboard will be created through which participants will join the program. Selected articles to edit, improve, or introduced into Wikipedia will be made available on the dashboard. Participants will be requested to assign themselves articles from the dashboard.

Physical, face-to-face meetings will be used for the training, edit-a-thon, and meet-up. After the training, we will create a WhatsApp group where participants will be sharing ideas on our Wikipedia project.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We will study the Wikipedia-friendly Space Policy Guidelines carefully with the participants before the commencement of the program. To create a sense of community and equality among participants, participants will be advised to lessen the use of titles during the event. This is to ensure that no participant feels intimidated. We will ensure that the environment is inviting by certifying beforehand the availability of neat working space, steady electric power supply, and internet connectivity.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

This program has been advertised in the Wikipedia Nigeria User Group (item 190), and the University of Nigeria Wikipedia Community WhatsApp group. The link to the Wikipedia Nigerian User Group page is https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria#Consolation_City_Organisation_A_%2B_F_English_Wikipedia_EDIT-A-THON

I have discussed this project with the Wikipedia program coordinator at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Dr. Ngozi Osadebe, User: Ngozi osadebe. She felt that it is a worthwhile project because there are few groups engaged in Art and Feminism Wikipedia projects in Nigeria. Moreover, she opined that editing Wikipedia is a viable means of teaching the university female staff digital and research writing skills.
