Support: Superlative campaign for Excellence Grant Proposal edit

Students and Faculties at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) are increasingly interested in contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects. Raising a group of volunteers to teach students and faculty how to contribute high-quality content is a way of sustaining the interest of the people in the Wikipedia movement. The aim of this proposal is to organise a train-the-trainer workshop for the faculty of social sciences. Though Wikipedia training and edit-a-thon have been taking place yearly in the university (The University Library (2017 - 2021) and Surplus People in the Universities Research Group (SPURG) (2021 and 2022), it is important that more organizations in the University join in the training because of the number of faculties and students at the university.

Many of our programs such as this are targeted at women faculty, female postgraduate students and people with disabilities. Many people in these categories lack digital skills which are needed in the present world. When equipped with digital skills, the people acquire the capability to contribute information to Wikipedia on the areas that interest them, thereby closing the information gap that exists in Wikipedia in those areas.

Moreover, experience from our past training on Wikipedia editing showed that female students benefit a lot from the training programs. From the training, many of our students learned how to write in a collaborative online environment, learnt digital information search skills and how to evaluate research articles which helped them to publish quality articles needed for promotion.

I have looked at the objectives of this proposal and the strategies mapped out to achieve them, I am convinced that they will lead to the desired result.

I therefore strongly support the proposal. Ngozi osadebe (talk) 14:28, 20 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ngozi Stella Udechukwu,

Thank you for submitting your grant application. We appreciate your interest in contributing to the mission of the Wikimedia Movement. We are continuously strengthening our grants review process, ensuring that grant funding is being invested towards impactful projects and efforts geared towards contributing to the mission of Wikimedia Movement in the most efficient and effective manner.

After a thorough review of your application, we have decided to not fund your Rapid Fund request. Here are the main reasons for our decision:

  • We think that the team does not have sufficient experience on target Wikimedia projects. Additionally, the main applicant has some warnings for creating copyvios.
  • We think that the requested budget is not aligned with the proposed impact. We recommend the team to seek funding through Wikimedia Nigeria UG microgrants.

Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 12:09, 11 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
