R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Ghanaian Pidgin is an emerging language which is spoken by the youth in Ghana and the diaspora. The language is spoken by more than 5 million people in Ghana but only few know about its existence on Wikipedia and its sister projects. The Ghanaian Pidgin Wikimedians Community was then established to help preserve the sum of all knowledge in Ghanaian Pidgin. Since its inception, members of the community have being trained on how to localize the Ghanaian Pidgin Wikipedia incubator on Translatewiki and to contribute on the Incubator (https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Ghanaian_Pidgin_Wikimedians_Community/Ghanaian_Pidgin/students/overview). This project will recruit new editors and introduce them to the Ghanaian Pidgin Wikimedians Community (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ghanaian_Pidgin_Wikimedians_Community) to Wikipedia and its sister projects and encourage them to contribute to their local wiki which is the Ghanaian Pidgin Wikipedia Incubator.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

This project aims at capacity building and motivation of the community members through training and contest. The Ghanaian Pidgin language is fast growing in Ghana especially among the youth, It is spoken in most second cycle and tertiary institutions in the country. This approach is chosen to recruit and train new and existing editors while the contest serves as a motivation to help improve the retention rate of new and experienced editors who joined the community.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Having translated all of the "Most Important Messages" into Ghanaian Pidgin, we would focus on organizing 2 workshops and a contest.

We would have one in-person training in Accra targeting persons in Greater Accra Region and an online training session for persons living in other regions. This would be followed by a month long editing contest. Two "office hours" sessions would be held whilst the contest is ongoing to engage participants and also recruit new editors to join the contest.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

1Lib1Ref, Art+Feminism, Wiki Loves Africa, WikiForHumanRights

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

1. Maxwell (User:Xibitgh) : An educator, volunteer and an active contributor to the Ghanaian Pidgin Wikipedia incubator, he would co-facilitate the training sessions

2. Stephen (User:NanaYawBotar) : Experienced Wikimedia Volunteer and event organizer. He would be in charge of logistics and Communication.
6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

There is a huge gap with indigenous languages and translation in most of the local languages and spoken languages in Ghana. Ghanaian Pidgin is spoken by illiterates, semi-literates and literates in Ghana. The Ghanaian Pidgin is popular amongst the youth in Ghana. This would serve as a way to populate the Ghanaian Pidgin on Wikipedia and its sister projects to gain the necessary recognition for its 5 million speakers.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Advocacy

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language, Age

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants are the youth especially in senior high schools, universities and anyone who can contribute in the Ghanaian Pidgin. We would also engage the Ghanaian Pidgin Wikimedians Community.

We have an existing WhatsApp group where we will communicate and also on Twitter where we will share information. After the proposal is implemented we wish to apply the following strategies:

Usernames and contact information of participants would be collected through feedback forms. Send a follow-up evaluation survey to participants and analyze the feedback. We would also identify the most dedicated and motivated contributors and mentor them for future events participation. Newbies would also be added to our existing WhatsApp group for further discussions.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

Adherence to the Wikimedia friendly space policy.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal.
