1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Due to the absolute dearth of knowledge about Wikipedia and its sister Projects in the university, Gombe State University, the Creating Wikipedia Awareness In Gombe State University is targeted towards laying a solid foundation for the widespread of Wikimedia Foundation projects among the students of the university. This is in addition to revamping and modelling them on numerous digital and offline skills so as enable them contribute massively on contents that have to do with the university in its entirety, alongside deploying the knowledge and skills learnt to contribute contents with original images for Wikipedia.

Gombe State University is a state-owned university in northeastern Nigeria. It is located in Shamaki Ward, Tudun Wada, Gombe. Gombe State University was founded in 2004 under the Mohammed Danjuma Goje administration. The university was established by the government to meet the academic needs of indigenes in the state and further improve the educational sector of the state. Despite the fact that the university has been there for over ten years with many local and international scholars, tourist attraction sites such as the Gombe Zoo, historical and research places, and many more, but there exist zero information about/on the university on Wikipedia. The training hopes to bridge that with the help of experienced editors. Also, unlike in other universities, there has never been any Trainings or Awareness that can train people and notify them about the projects of the Wikimedia Foundation and how they can contribute to it in the university. No doubt, the awareness and creation functions will help a lot to establish the first ever Wikipedia community in the university, including a club specifically meant for group of editors and learners.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The project will deploy the following approaches:

Creating awareness about Wikimedia Foundation projects in Gombe State University.

Mobilizing, training and recruiting new editors for the Wikimedia Community in Gombe State University. Adding or improving local contents about Gombe State University on English Wikipedia and Wikipedia Common.

Creating a community of English Wikimedia Editors in Gombe State University.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The Creating Wikipedia Awareness in Gombe State University will cover three different sessions with the establishment of a Wikimedia community in the university;

The Virtual Forum: This is targeted towards exposing the participants to basic knowledge about Wikimedia Foundation and its landmark projects, including contributing to Wikipedia. This will be actualized via Zoom with some soft copy materials presented to the participants before and after the online session.

The Physical Session: This is a one on one physical event with the participants The medium will also be used to sensitise the community on the projects of Wikimedia Foundation and how they can massively join.

The Physical Training Session and edit-a-thon: This is a hands-on physical training where the new editors will be given the avenue to practice what they have learnt through theoretical and practical engagements. After the training, there will be a three a three Edit-a-thon where winners will be awarded a certificate of excellence.

Developing and creating the first ever Community of Wikipedia in the university.

We hope to engage these participants by working with students' union and writing organisations where the target audience are already actively participating as intellectual members. The call for participation will be done through effective local communication channels such as posters, social media and through students' union leaders.

During the project, I and the team member I will be actively involved in facilitating the training and also making sure that the participants get the act and art of contributing to Wikipedia and sister projects. Also, will be monitoring the three weeks online edit-a-thon for the new editors to make sure that Wikipedia is not vandalised out of ignorance.

At the end, the project will contribute and support wikipedia and wikimedia Commons in knowledge building as well as total development of wikimedia movement through relevant article development, creating more active editors and good quality photo uploading.

To ensure the sustainability of the project, I will Maintain tight contact with the participants involved in the project by creating WhatsApp group titled Gombe State University Wikipedia Editors' Community where issues related to the development of Wikimedia projects will be the subject matter. Also, information on the latest wikipedia events and workshops will be shared on it.
