Ireland will be running the second annual WLM contest in 2015. After a successful inaugural year we will expand the contest this year to encompass more locations and more participants.

  1. Primary Goal: Increase the availability of images of Irish monuments on Wikimedia Commons.
  2. Secondary Goal: Outreach to existing Wikimedians in Ireland and the recruitment of new Wikimedians.




  1. Launch Event-We are holding a launch event on 29 August in conjunction with an archaeology event in Dublin City Centre. We will have the winning images from last year on display and staff there to answer any questions and promote the event. Through a grant from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht we will hire a PR company to ensure media coverage of this event.
  2. Photowalks-We will organise at least 5 photowalks during the competition. There will be at least one in Dublin and 4 more outside of the city. They will be organised by the working group as well as outside participants.
  3. We will organise an upload event sometime during the 3rd week on the contest to assist any users in uploading images to Commons.
  4. Awards Event-We will hold an awards event in early November to hold an exhibition of the winning images and award the prizes.



Target readership


We hope to impact Wikimedia Commons by creating more available images of Ireland monuments for use on Wikipedia and by the wider public. The increased availability of Irish images will also benefit Vicipéid, the Irish language Wikipedia.

  • Increasing Reach
    • We will increase our online promotion of the event to encourage our base to support and promote the contest.
    • We will increase our offline promotion of the event to target other interested groups such as photography groups.
  • Increasing Participation
    • Photowalks and an upload event will help to increase participation.
    • National media coverage will increase awareness and participation in the contest.
  • Increasing Quality
    • We will reach out to photography groups to underline the importance of quality free content images.
    • Possible participation in an exhibition will encourage more experienced photographers to participate.

Measures of success


Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG Program Resources for suggested measures of success. Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some Global Metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

  • We will increase the number of participants by 10% on last year to at least 285 participants.
  • We will increase the number of images uploaded by 20% on last year to at least 2400 images.
  • We will hold at least 5 photowalks and 3 additional live events during the contest period.
  • We will reach out to at least 5 photography clubs/open content groups to increase awareness of the contest and Wikimedia.

  • Low participation-to counter this we are hiring a PR firm to help promote the contest during the launch period. We are holding several live events to generate participation. We will actively promote the contest on Twitter and Facebook.

I would like to endorse this project as proposed by the Wikimedia Community Ireland. The grant would allow the group to build on the success of the 2014 WLM Ireland competition, further raising awareness and building on the collection of images of Irish monuments available under a creative commons license. The 2014 competition was very successful and helped significantly to deepen interest in Wikimedia in Ireland.

By way of example, the most significant contribution to the competition that I made was the organizing of an afternoon-long photowalk. In an immediate sense, the walk produced photographs that could be used by Wikimedia projects. In a more significant sense, however, it opened up Wikimedia to a new cohort of contributors in an exciting and natural way.

None of those taking part were Wikimedia contributors. Their motivation to join the walk was simply as photographers enjoying their craft. They may have used Wikipedia every day - but never thought before of contributing (if they even knew they could). By the end of the afternoon, we had taken lots of great photographs, talked about contributing to Wikimedia and inspired a new cohort of people join in.

That walk was a really enriching and empowering way to bring new contributors on board through a skill they were passionate about. For me, and for those who took part in it, that minuscule part of the 2014 competition as a whole really demonstrated the values of Wikimedia. --Tóraí (talk) 16:08, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

  • The 2014 competition was a great success on numerous fronts for the Irish Wikimedia Community. It started conversations around the nature of monuments, openness of cultural data, and awareness of the monuments and their significance.
