Activities and lessons learned
editActivities
editThis was the first year that Wikimedia España organised Wiki Loves Earth (Amical organised it the previous year for Catalan speaking regions). To get it started we agreed on the type of items that were relevant for the contest and looked for a standard documentation that had already worked on lists of items. We finally used for this purpose the official list of Sites of Community Importance of the Natura 2000 Network. This allowed us to create lists in Wikipedia with encyclopedic value and we didn't have to define object items, there were already provided. One of the additional advantages of this approach is that the used reference is paneuropean and could be adopted by whole Europe.
There were 11 volunteers involved in the project:
- Poco a poco: creation of items lists, web site, Commons campaign, templates and categories, general coordination, creation of items lists, coordination Flickr and award ceremony and preparation of the grant
- Montgomery: jury coordination, creation of items lists
- Pedro J Pacheco: initial review of images, jury and awards ceremony
- Laura Fiorucci: creation of items lists, initial review of images
- Discasto: creation of items lists, initial review of images, technical issues (bot-supported categorization, stats)
- Harpagornis: Flickr and initial review of images
- 19Tarrestnom65: creation of items lists, initial review of images, prizes and certificates
- Millars: initial review of images, spreading
- gaianauta: creation of items lists
- Rodelar: creation of items lists, initial review of images, spreading
- Kadellar: creation of items lists, search for sponsors
Lessons learned
edit- What worked well?
- We had a lot of discussion prior to launch the contest about the type of items we wanted to consider in the contest and found a very good base using the Nature 2000 Network as in this project a lot of information had already been gathered and harmonized including entries for each item that we linked from the template created in Commons. For the first time we also decided to review and improve each single uploaded image, this means that we closed gaps in the description page (misssing id, category or description) and verified that they had been actually captured in the documented site. Wikimedia España also included in the contest with relatively little effort (3 more listings, review and improvement of 40% more images, translation of the website and duplication of the existing framework in Commons) Portugal in order to increase the visibility of the chapter in the neighbouring country
- What didn't work?
- We had some issues with the MediaWiki API as it was changed end of June and we had not finihsed the foreseen tasks for the bot.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- We should start the review process the first day images are uploaded.

editOutcomes and impact
editOutcomes
edit- Provide the original project goal here.
- The overall purpose of this Wiki Loves Earth contest is to increase the amount of freely-licensed material related to Spanish and Portuguese protected natural sites in Wikimedia Commons, and improve the quality and quantity of Wikipedia articles about them, including illustrating the articles with the uploaded pictures. If the project is successful, more people will know not only about Wikipedia, but also about Wikimedia Commons and new users will be engaged in the projects. Additionally, the Wikimedia movement and the local chapters will gain visibility within the involved communities. Within this scope, we are asking for funds to finance the cost of the prizes for the contest winners, as well as the award ceremony (joint with WLM) and the cost of promotion for the contest (web site and others).
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
- Yes. The amount of material related to monuments under free license on Wikimedia Commons was increased by 5,024 images. These images let editors increase the quality of articles; 560 images are already used, there are 56 Quality Images[1] and 2 Featured pictures[2] on Wikimedia Commons. The writing contest helped to give use to the uploaded material and to improve or create articles related to them.

Global Metrics
editWe are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.
- Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
- Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."
For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.
Metric | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
1. # of active editors involved | <154 | 154 is the amount of not new participants, some of them could have not been edited more than 5 times in the last month |
2. # of new editors | 396 | see above |
3. # of individuals involved | 575 | 549 participants (397 in Spain and 152 in Portugal) + 5 jury members + 6 collaborators that didn't upload images + 15 additional participants in writing contest |
4a. # of new images/media added to Wikimedia articles/pages | 1,330 | see above |
4b. # of new images/media uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (Optional) | 6,887 images | see above |
5. # of articles added or improved on Wikimedia projects | 442 | 290 improved + 152 new articles, in 42 different languages. 1 019 008 bytes of content. |
6. Absolute value of bytes added to or deleted from Wikimedia projects | 1 019 008 bytes of content. | see above |
- Learning question
- Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
- We think so. Without Wiki Loves Earth many people will not upload their pictures on Wikimedia Commons, or on Flickr under a free license. We can see that the amount of pictures is high and the amount of participants in the first edition very significant. We realized that users not members of Wikimedia Spain helped us improving lists or using images on Wikipedia, or categorizing images on Wikimedia Commons. There are people who are waiting these contests to help Wikipedia, and they do not care about prizes.
Additional metrics
edit- Another metrics can be the amount of Featured, Quality and Valued images. It is true that many pictures with a good quality were not presented to this process because many users, and of course new or user who only participate in this kind of projects are not interested in that or do not know about it.
- Cost per image and participant. According to Grants:Evaluation/Evaluation reports/2015/Wiki Loves Monuments, "Wiki Loves Monuments implementations generated an average of nearly 4,000 uploads and cost around $25 USD per participant and $0.90 USD per upload." In this case, Wiki Loves Earth 2015 in Spain generated 6,887 uploads and cost around $8.45 USD or 7.44 € per participant and $0.65 USD or 0.57 € per upload. The cost per distinct used image was 6.29 € or $7.14 USD, versus an average of $6.31 USD in 2015 in Wiki Loves Monuments.[12] Note: this figures are influenced by the fact that the award ceremony for both, WLE and WLM, is charged on the WLE budget. The figures per user, upload and distinct image in the WLM are clearly better.[13]
Impact
editWhat impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?
Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects?
- As the contest was held for the first time in the Iberian peninsula we could gain almost 400 new users for the photo contest.
Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects?
- Option B: We did as we created for the first times listings of protected natural places (listings of encyclopedic value) and focus on getting pictures of them. The high image usage rate (9%) also proofs that the material used was useful. Furthermore we rounded up the photo contest with a writing contest: 152 new articles, 290 improved articles over 42 different Wikimedia projects (!!). The high amount of images, their use on many Wikimedia projects like Wikipedias in several languages, and the amount of Featured and Quality images could be a signal of improving the quality of the information provided in Wikimedia projects.
Option C: How did you increase the reach (readership) of one or more Wikimedia projects?
- Option C: Wiki Loves Earth 2015 in Spain and Portugal increased reach of Wikimedia projects, because it had an impact in society thanks to a high amount of press mentions, some of them in important medias. Also the impact in social networks could be kept in mind.
