P1 - Digitization
DIY scanner was finally purchased and brought to Wikimedia Armenia office. The list of authors, whose works are in public domain was almost completed․ Authors were divided by copyright.
Because of the change of Education program scope and in order to activate Wikisource it was decided to digitize also fiction books. WM AM organizes some events on Facebook, where with the help of Armenian speakers the books which are never digitized are proofread. The quality of Armenian OCR and proofread programs are not of the best and people do not like to proofread scientific ("hard") books, that's why fiction was digitized. Digitized books include:
- Hovnadathan son of Yeremia - Vahan Totovents
- Armenian doctors repressed and massacred in Ottoman Empire, Republic of Turkey and nearby territories. Brief Bibliographical dictionary. Harutyun Minasyan (requested by GLAM)
- Nikolai Gogol, Taras Bulba
- Maxim Gorky, Legends and Poems
- Grigor Zohrap, Novellas
- Artyush Sanosyan, And also white (requested by GLAM)
- Self-defense of Akhltskha and Akhlkalak provinces in 1918, Artyush Sanosyan (requested by GLAM)
- Manuk Abeghyan Collective works, Volume 1-8, (requested by Wiki loves science)
- Textbook of Christian belief in Middle Armenian.
- Georga Abovyants, Short history of Armenian nation, 1869
- Ghevond Alishan, Armenian notable people catalogue, 1855 (requested by Wikipedia Education Program)
- Artsakh history, Vahram Balayan (requested by Wiki Loves Science)
- Praise of Etchmiadzin, Abraham Astapatsi, Istanbul, 1807
- History of Armenia, Agantangeghos (requested by Wiki Loves Science)
- Theory of Bible history, Stepanos Agonts, 1819
- 10 Western Armenian books were digitized in order to provide Western Armenian resources for WikiCamp Lebanon. See more details in Western Armenian project reports.
Since February 32 books were digitized. In 2014, 47 books were digitized in sum and used in different projects.
P2 - Wiki Loves Science
In order to sustain the achievement of Wiki Loves Science, to attract more adults professionals, WLS program was continued. Annual plan was changed, Wiki Loves Earth project budget was used for WLS. As WLS budget was doubled, measures of success was also doubled.
Additional 2 WLS Weekends were organized - 27 February - 1 March, 3-5 April. In the last WLS Weekend a discussion was organized with active project participants and the continuation of the project was discussed. Participants agreed to slightly change the project scope and targets preserving the achieved best.

Stepanakert WikiClub was established as a result of cooperation between Wikimedia Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Government.
- Saturday workshops
Wikimedia Armenia continues organizing open workshops in WM AM office every Saturday. Anyone interested in wiki projects, wiki editing and needing assistance as well as wiki editors who want to edit in pleasant atmosphere can participate in these workshops. About 13 people participate in each workshop. Among them there are also active wiki editors of different hywikiprojects.
- Laptops
As Wikimedia Armenia needed more laptops for Wikicamps and workshops organized in WM AM office where editors come mainly without laptops, we decided to purchase laptops with lower parameters with less cost. As a result we managed to buy 15 laptops instead of 7 which are used during the camps and workshops.
P4 - Educational Programs
Wikimedia Armenia Educational program successfully continues and involves new educational institutions in different regions and cities of Armenia. In 2015 Wikimedia Armenia began cooperating with Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for its "Wikipedia in Western Armenian" program. During this cooperation WM AM organized Wikipedia training week for 12 teachers and journalists of Armenian community of Lebanon, in order to involve them in wiki editing process. The aim of the event was to teach wiki editing tools, to tell about wiki movement and to prepare wiki coordinators, who will spread wiki movement in Lebanon by involving new educational, scientific and other institutions.
After a successful training week the teachers and journalists returned home and conducted a number of workshops in the Armenian schools of Lebanon. The aim of the workshops was to involve students and other professors in Wiki editing process in order they could enrich Western Armenian Wikipedia program with professional articles of their field. During the workshop the editors first of all learned typing in Western Armenian, then how to edit Wikipedia, its rules, editing tools, etc.
The teachers also helped to organize a Wiki camp in Beirut for about 50 high school students. For more details see Western Armenian report.

P5 – GLAM
- Workshop was organized in "Hay Girq Bookstore" where different contemporary Armenian authors, readers and other people gathered together to learn wikiediting tools and enrich Armenian Wikipedia with articles of Armenian cinematography.
- Armenian GLAM team in collaboration with Armenian Medical Museum, and the head of Museum Haroutyun Minassian provided us with huge deal of materials about doctors, which was digitized by Wikimedia Armenia. Now Armenian community works on those texts making them into Wiki articles. Dr. Haroutyun Minassian's book is called "Armenian doctors repressed and massacred in Ottoman Empire". He also has provided images from archive of Armenian Medical Museum. The book was scanned and uploaded in Commons and Wikisource. After making lists in cooperation page, the editors created over 561 articles in Eastern Armenian and 70 in Western Armenian[2].
- WM AM Nagorno Karabakh WikiClub volunteers cooperated with Vahram Balayan, who agreed to provide 2 books under CC 4.0 license. These 2 books are about Nagorno Karabakh, its history, geography, culture etc (Artsakh History & Nagorno Karabakh). Books were digitized and put on Commons. Later on the base of these free sources articles on Nagorno Karabakh will be created and improved.
- Another author - Artush Sanosyan, provided his 2 books, which are about Armenian history and geography. These books are now reliable free sources for Wikipeda Education Program students. Some of them write articles on the base of these materials.
- National Library of Armenia provided Western Armenian books for WikiCamp Lebanon, which were digitized by Wikimedia Armenia. National Library of Armenia expressed its willingness to collaborate with Wikimedia Armenia in other projects as well.
P6 - Expand Wiki Commons
- Photo project called "Famous Armenians photo project" was continued. WM AM volunteers took photos of famous Armenians and uploaded them in Commons. After February WM AM volunteer Armine Aghayan took photos of about 120 famous Armenians and celebrities. 210 photos of famous Armenians were uploaded to Commons in total.
P7 - International Projects
- Wikimedia Conference 2015
Wikimedia Armenia had 2 participants in Wikimedia Conference 2015 annual meeting of all Wikimedia organizations in Berlin, Germany. The conference was an opportunity to exchange ideas with other Wikimedia movement members. We exchanged useful information for our organizations, discussed the grants, fundraising and finances, the movement’s strategy and future.
The conference helped to learn about other Wikimedia chapters' experience and activities, to get acquainted with new people for further cooperation as well as motivated the Armenian participants continue working on WM AM projects with more enthusiasm and new ideas after returning home.
- Wikipedia conference Yerevan 2015
WikiConference Yerevan 2015 was the third international Wikipedia conference in Yerevan. It was held at the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts on 19-20th of June. Its goals were the development and the promotion of wiki projects, free knowledge and open culture in Armenia and the neighboring region, as well as bringing together new and experienced wiki editors and providing an environment for them to share their experience and knowledge with each other.
Though there were 300 people registered online less came to the conference (about 100 people). Among the conference participants, there were experienced Wikipedians, Wikipedia Education Program students, participants from different WM AM projects (Wiki Loves Science, Wikipedia for Teachers, GLAM etc.), representatives from the Ministry of Culture and cultural institutions (including the Deputy Minister of Culture, Arev Samuelyan, museum representatives, etc.), other interested people.
We had guests from Wikimedia Foundation who had speeches in the conference: WMF Chair of the Board of Trustees - Jan-Bart de Vreede, Senior Program Officer, Emerging Wikimedia Communities - Asaf Bartov, WMF Wikipedia Education Program Manager - Anna Koval and GLAMwiki Coordinator, Europeana - Liam Wyatt.[3]
As a part of the conference a four-day seminar was organized in Aghveran for teachers of different regions of Armenia (May 27-31). The aim of the seminar was to spread wikimovement in different regions of Armenia and involve new editors and volunteers in WM AM projects. A month before an announcement was made during which 70 teachers applied to the seminar. After the interview WM AM chose 29 teachers who could participate in the event. During the seminars the teachers learned about wikimovement and wikiprojects, learned editing tools and the principles of editing in Wikipedia as well as improved and created a number of articles.
- WM CEE Spring 2015
Armenian Wikipedia community participated in CEE Spring 2015 project from 21 March - May 31. The goal of the project was to support article creation about every country in region on every Wikipedia in region. Armenian Wikipedia had 32 editors who participated in the project. All in all 779 articles were written, 333 from prepared list. The most written articles are about Albania (115 articles). The winner was Armenuhi Voskanyan who wrote 255 articles. As there are visa issues for Armenian citizens to travel to Macedonia, the Armenian winner participant couldn't apply and travel to CEE Spring Camp.
- Wikipedia Educational Conference
There was no EduWiki conference organized during this period.
P8 - General Wikimedia Office management
Wikimedia Armenia's new chapter office in Yerevan officially opened on 19 June 2015 with a grand ceremony. The President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, the Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosyan, and the Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan all attended. Benefactor and Intellectual Renaissance Foundation founder Artur Janibekyan, with whom WM AM cooperates, attended as well. Also in attendance were representatives from the Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia movement: Jan-Bart de Vreede (Chair of the Board of Trustees), Asaf Bartov (Senior Program Officer, Emerging Wikimedia Communities), Anna Koval (Manager, Wikipedia Education Program), and Liam Wyatt (GLAMwiki Coordinator, Europeana).
The following core issues were discussed in the meeting:
- To include the study of wiki editing tools in the national school curriculum. Similar programs have been successfully implemented in such countries education curriculum as Israel, Serbia and France. The possibility to make a similar program work in Armenia. Options and obstacles. The ways to solve existing problems.
- Discussions concerning possible changes in the Copyright and Related rights law of Armenia, in particular, in terms of protection of economic rights of the author (Article 37).
- Wider cooperation within the GLAMwiki program (cooperation with galleries, libraries, archives, and museums), which aims at digitizing scientific-cultural heritage, its preservation, and expansion and translation into other languages.
All these issues are very important and a possibility was created to raise them at the governmental level, which would enable Wikimedia editors to add more content to the Wikimedia projects, as well as will help involve more editors and volunteers in the wiki movement, and enlarge the scope of Wikimedia Armenia's cooperation with educational, cultural, and scientific institutions nationwide.
This event was widely covered in the Armenian media. 1 2 3 4 It was also covered by Armenian Public Television, Armenia TV, ATV and many other TV channels.
P9 - Activities that lead to the introduction of Western Armenian as a language in Wikipedia
WM AM president Susanna Mkrtchyan had an exploratory visit to Beirut, Lebanon on 7-14 March 2015. As a pre-step of the development of the "Western Armenian Wikipedia" project, she met different educational, social, and media representatives from the Armenian Diaspora.
During her visit, WM AM president introduced Wikimedia Armenia, its goals, projects, and strategy, which are to create contacts with people who will spread the Wiki movement in Lebanon. Susanna Mkrtchyan also introduced the "Western Armenian Wikipedia" project in details, and the important role it has in the development and preservation of Western Armenian as a language.
As a result of a number of meetings, it was decided to organize a training week in Armenia for teachers and journalists who would agree to be the coordinators of the Western Armenian Wikipedia project in Lebanon, to recruit new editors, and to spread the Wiki movement.
In addition, the participants also decided to organize a Summer Wiki camp for schoolchildren in Lebanon, which will also promote the program[4].
On April 3, twelve participants arrived in Armenia from Beirut. During the training week a number of discussions took place such as: where to start from, how to involve more people, how to spread the movement, what problems do we face, and how to solve them, how the Wikipedia Education program works in Armenia, how and when to organize a Wikicamp for students in Lebanon. The participants learned Wiki editing tools after which they created their own articles in Western Armenian. The editors stated that Wikipedia is the best way of preserving Western Armenian, which is considered to be an endangered language in some countries.
A WikiCamp was organized in Lebanon, Beirut in August 3-12. 40 Western Armenian speaker high school student campers from different regions of Lebanon and schools of Wikipedia Education Program joined the camp. Among campers there were also 4 from Armenia, who were chosen to travel to Beirut as an appreciation for their activity in wiki movement and editing process. This camp will be separately reported later this year[5].
For other Western Armenian program activities, please see Western Armenian program reports for January-April and May-July.
Lessons learned
edit- What worked well?
- P1 - Digitization - DIY scanner was finally purchased and brought to Wikimedia Armenia office. We digitize fiction books along with scientific ones. We have organized some events on Facebook, where with the help of Armenian speakers we proofread books which were never digitized. All in all 32 books were digitized.
- P2 - Wiki Loves Science - The project is an ongoing one and can be considered successful because we have involved different specialists who enrich Armenian Wikipedia with high quality articles of their field. The project is a great motivation for them and they continue editing. Since February 20 new participants joined the project. The editors have created 598 articles and improved 185 articles.
- P3 – Support and Increase active WikiClubs: - The project is very successful. We have added the number of clubs which help us to increase reach in different regions of Armenia and involve more people in the movement.
- P4 - Educational Programs - Educational programs are also very successful. More schools and students have joined our program. A number of workshops are being organized to involve more educational institutions.
- P5 – GLAM Since February we began to collaborate with several GLAM institutions. Particularly with the Armenian Medical Museum which provided us books about doctors under free license which were digitized and uploaded to commons. 561 articles in Eastern Armenian and 70 in Western Armenian were written in Armenian Wikipedia based on the provided material. WM AM Nagorno Karabakh WikiClub volunteers cooperated with Vahram Balayan, who agreed to provide 2 books under CC 4.0 license. Another author - Artush Sanosyan, provided his 2 books. National Library of Armenia provided Western Armenian books for WikiCamp Lebanon. All the books are digitized and uploaded to the Commons.
- P6 - Expand Wiki Commons - "Famous Armenians photo project" was continued. After February WM AM volunteer Armine Aghayan took photos of about 120 famous Armenians and celebrities. 210 photos of famous Armenians were uploaded to Commons in total.
- P7 - International Projects - Wikimedia Armenia had 2 participants in Wikimedia Conference 2015 annual meeting of all Wikimedia organizations in Berlin, Germany. The conference was an opportunity to exchange ideas and useful information with other wikimedia movement members. Armenian Wikipedia community participated in CEE Spring 2015 project from 21 March - May 31. Armenian Wikipedia had 32 editors who participated in the project. All in all 779 articles were written. Wikimedia Armenia organized WikiConference Yerevan 2015 which was the third international Wikipedia conference in Yerevan. One of its goals was to bring together new and experienced wiki editors and to provide an environment for them to share their experiences and knowledge with each other.
- P8 - General Wikimedia Office management - Wikimedia Armenia's new office in Yerevan officially opened on 19 June 2015 with a grand ceremony. A number of officials including the President of RA and WMF guests participated in the ceremony.
- P9 - Activities that lead to the introduction of Western Armenian as a language in Wikipedia - A number of activities were performed for the development of the program "Western Armenian in Wikipedia". Particularly, WM AM president Susanna Mkrtchyan introduced WM AM program at Pan-national educational council, after which twelve teachers and journalists of the Armenian community in Lebanon arrived in Armenia from Beirut for wiki training week on April 3. After returning home they conducted a number of workshops in the Armenian schools of Lebanon. As a result Wikimedia Armenia with the help of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation organized a WikiCamp for Western Armenian high school students in Lebanon, Beirut in August 3-12.
- What didn't work?
There were 300 people registered online to the Wikipedia Conference Yerevan 2015 but less came to the conference (about 100 people). The reason is that the conference first day coincided with the WM AM office opening ceremony. The conference was planned to take place in the second half of the day but as the opening ceremony lasted more, the conference began a bit later and there were people who couldn't wait and left before the conference opening.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
The majority of WM AM projects are ongoing projects and we continue their realization and development the same way because we have succeeded in the past. The only thing that we would like to change is connected with the above mentioned, i.e. it is difficult to organize 2 events simultaneously especially when one of the events is promoted more than the other one.
Learning patterns

- Learning question
- Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
WM AM projects has significantly increased our contributors' motivation which is seen by their activity. Many of the new participants as well as experienced editors continue editing in different wikiprojects and help in involving new people in the movement.
- Progress toward goals
Impact
editWhat impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?
Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects?
One of WM AM primary goals is the increasing and sustaining the participation in Armenian Wikimedia projects. That's why WM AM organizes different workshops for different auditorium and in different cities of Armenia. Besides, each Saturday WM AM organizes open workshops for those who want to contribute in wikiprojects but don't know how.
Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects?
Improving the quality of Armenian wikiprojects is one of our essential issues. We organize different inner projects involving experienced editors and specialists for the improvement of the content. For example within Wikipedia Education Program we have improved all the 3000+ (at that time there were only 3000+) Armenian words in Wiktionary. Currently we have 3 ongoing projects in Armenian Wikipedia - Wiki loves Science (which is aimed at improving educational articles by professionals of their field), Unsourced articles improvement and Stub articles improvement․
Option C: How did you increase the reach (readership) of one or more Wikimedia projects?
WM AM intensively works on increasing the reach of wikimovement outside Yerevan. That's why we organize workshops in different regions of Armenia and on base of active participants establish wikiclubs.
