Activities and lessons learned

Activities

• Preparations for the contest
  • Created a list of areas to be photographed.
  • Drafted a set of rules for participation to the contest [1]
  • Selected the members of the jury committee. [2] It included a photographer teacher, a scientist and amateur photographer, and three experienced wikimedians.
  • Launched a website at http://wle.wikimedia.gr
  • Communicated the contest through the greek WP village pump, a centralnotice, facebook, twitter, and a press release.
• Images were collected in category c:Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2016 in Greece
• Selection of winners
  • We used the same jury tool that we used in our previous photo contest (Wiki Loves Jurytool) at http://jury.wikimedia.gr/wle-2016)
  • Selected images that were not elligible according the rules of the contest (inelligible subject, low resolution) [3]
  • Part of the jury held a prejury round giving scores to all images.
  • Second round was held with the top 88 of the images from first round. The whole jury scored 88 images [4]. The top 10 images were selected as winners. [5]
• Award ceremony and editathon
  • We sought for a free and appropriate venue for the award ceremony and editathon. We got a space in Estudio Gallery, in Kifisia, Athens.
  • Printed posters and certificates, arranged for catering, and travelling for volunteers and winners.
  • Announced the event through the greek WP village pump, a centralnotice, facebook, twitter, and a press release.
  • The award ceremony and editathon were held on October 1st.[6]. Only 2 winners were present and the representative of the 3d one. The most of whom we had been contacted don't live in Athens and they didn't manage to come.
  • We organized also an online edit-a-thon announced in the el.wp village pump after the event to enrich Wikipedia, Wikispecies and Wikidata pages with images selected during the contest.

Lessons learned

What worked well?

• We had the technical and human capacity to achieve the most of our goals
• A series of good images were contributed to Wikimedia Commons, that covered regions and protected areas of Greece that wouldn't have been represented otherwise
• Many new amateur photographers and outdorsies got involved to contribute high quality pictures in Wikimedia Commons, learning probably more about Wikimedia Projects
• The jury tool

What didn't work?

• First winner didn't show up to receive his prize as he hadn't registered an email address to his account despite our instructions, a series of messages on his user talk page to contact with us and the public announcement of the winners.

What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?

• We would select a venue closer to the centre of Athens for the award ceremony and more accessible by means of public transportation.

The overall purpose of this Wiki Loves Earth contest is to increase the amount of freely-licensed material related to Greek protected natural sites in Wikimedia Commons, and improve the quality and quantity of Wikipedia articles about them, including illustrating the articles with the uploaded pictures. The project's general purpose is more people to know not only about Wikipedia, but also about Wikimedia Commons and new users to be engaged in the projects. Additionally, the Wikimedia movement and the local chapters to gain visibility within the involved communities.

Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.

Most of the project's goals were exceeded, if not met. This also includes improving the quality of the already existing articles related to the pictures. Also many Nature Protected Areas of Greece were covered for first time with photos from the competition. The goal for quality or featured pictures was not met, but we think that it was set high in the first place anyway.

Learning question

Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?

• The motivation of the photographers to contribute with pictures during Wikimedia photo contests is surely increased, as many of them participated to more than one photo contest (we know that from our jury members). People in Greece are now accustomed to this kind of contribution, but they mostly contribute with pictures.
