Activities and lessons learned edit

Activities edit

Wikipedia and Wiki Learning stickers printed up for students

Servicio social students with Ed program certificates of appreciation
  • The time period for this project covered the last month of the Fall 2015 semester and the entirety of the Spring 2016 semester
  • The main event we were planning for, March 2016 Semana i, was postponed by the university to Septemer 2016 (once a year instead of twice) so that larger/more complex activities are planned.
  • Our stats for Spring 2016 are light by our standards because of the loss of Semana i, 81 students (three classes and servicio social), 3 teachers, 81 students, 109 articles created or expanded in eswiki, 6 in enwiki 4,702,517 bytes to Spanish Wikipedia, one tutorial video for translation projects, two videos in collaboration with the Museo de Arte Popular and four video interview with Wikimedians in education.
  • None of these projects required grant funds, with the exception of some administrative costs and the stickers printed during this time period. (We already had sufficient buttons)
  • As per conversations with Kacie Harold and others from Grants, the rest of the funds will be returned. Cost of wire transfer is $60 USD
  • The main two reasons we could not work the project as planned was the postponement of Semana i and that none of the video projects worked out among students and partners required the transport of expensive video equipment.
  • However, the grant was not a complete waste. Preparations for Semana i in September began in January 2016, as we have a total of 6 teachers on two campuses who have registered with administration to run a Wikimedia-based activity for students. These run a wide gamut from writing articles to recording video, recording of Mexican folk music and two Wiki expeditions. Student total for these projects is estimated at over 200.
  • One of the main purposes of this grant was to show administration that grant monies are available for projects. This aspect was successful. Administration just accepted our application to open a "folder" to start the process of making the school a fiscal sponsor. Its the same process use to receive research grant funds. The importance of Semana i is that it provides and timeline and "push" to get these steps done.
  • Our new grant request will be significantly more sophisticated, with the experience we gained here.

Lessons learned edit

What worked well?
Receiving funds
What didn't work?
Getting timely attention from Tec de Monterrey bureaucracy. However, we should not be surprised. Some cultures jump when money is involved, others not so much.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
We are already doing it differently as noted above.

Outcomes and impact edit

Outcomes edit

Provide the original project goal here.
Wikimedia Commons with the addition of video and photos and Spanish Wikipedia (media and text) and lastly English Wikipedia (media primarily). In reality, it is to start working to set up the bureaucracy needed for future activities.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
While we did do what we set out here, the impact of the grant was minimal as the mechanisms to get these things done were already in place. What the grant really did was pay for small items that were paid for previously out of volunteers' pockets or in the case of stickers, done ad hoc when sent or given by the Wikipedia Education Progam. The main outcome was to have the experience both for showing administration of Tec de Monterrey to work out a system for support for Semana i in Fall.

Progress towards targets and goals edit

Project metrics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Video projects 3 significant video projects 1 tutorial on how we do translation at Wiki Learning, 2 informational videos with the Museo de Arte Popular
articles in eswiki 109 new or significantly expanded articles As noted above, grant funds did not make a significant difference here, with the exception that all participating students received stickers and servicio social students received certificates (as they work 160 hours each)
begin process to have a "bank account" for future income, as a research project application for such (called a "folio") accepted by the finance department of the Tec de Monterrey This is the most important in the long run, and the most difficult, as it is a bit different from what the WMF's procedures normally accomodate

Global Metrics edit

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.

  1. Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."

For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.

Metric Achieved outcome Explanation
1. # of active editors involved 81+3 81 students and 3 professors
2. # of new editors 71 Teachers are all repeats, most students are new.
3. # of individuals involved 81+3 Same as the first metric
4a. # of new images/media added to Wikimedia articles/pages 2 two of the videos are on Wikipedia articles on sign language and the Museo de Arte Popular in enwiki and eswiki
4b. # of new images/media uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (Optional) 23 3 videos and 20 photographs. We did not attract many photographers this time around.
5. # of articles added or improved on Wikimedia projects 109 in eswiki, 6 in enwiki I did not include the work done in Fall of 2015 as the grant period falls only on the last few weeks of that semester and could not affect it.
6. Absolute value of bytes added to or deleted from Wikimedia projects 4,702,517 in es.wiki, 312,624 to en.wiki Most are translations as almost all of our students have high levels of English.
Learning question
Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
There are two material motivators for student editors, food, swag and certificates. Although not expensive, just having those tokens readily available gives students something tangible to feel appreciated. Certificates of appreciation are far more valued here in Mexico than in the United States.

Impact edit

What impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?

Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects? Like other educational programs, our activities do not translate into new, long-term volunteers for the projects. This is one reason why we look for quality contributions.

Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects? Our students work primarily on articles in Spanish on academic topics, an area which is deficient, as well as continuing to explore avenues for more technical contributions (video, animation, sound). These are areas that seem to be lacking.

Option C: How did you increase the reach (readership) of one or more Wikimedia projects?

  • It is unfortunate that we are unable to answer any of these because of the loss of the Semana i boost.
