Grants:IdeaLab/Health rating radio button template on talk pages
Project idea
editWhat Wikimedia project(s) and specific areas will you be evaluating?
editIs this project measuring a specific space on a project (e.g. deletion discussions), or the project as a whole?
English Wikipedia and occasionally CN wiki
Describe your idea. How might it be implemented?
editProvide details about the method or process of how you will evaluate your community or collect data. Does your idea involve private or personally identifying information? Take a look at the Privacy Policy for Wikimedia’s guidelines in this area.
Provide a “page health” template which can be placed at the top of an en wiki talk page. The template adds five radio buttons to the top of a talk page corresponding to a 1-5 rating. Any user can then click one of the buttons. Their choice will be anonymous but retrievable by the server which will calculate an average health rating. A user can change their choice as and when it becomes applicable to do so. The health rating of the page will not be revealed to editors but can serve to alert admins to unhealthy pages. The data can also be used to rank pages by health, as well as identify unattended pages.
Are there experienced Wikimedians who can help implement this project?
editIf applicable, please list groups or usernames of individuals who you can work with on this project, and what kind of work they will do.
I can’t think of any individuals. It’s a sys admin job
How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?
editIt may be feasible to announce health ratings of pages, or positive changes in page health. However, the idea will be deemed successful if the data leads to increased page health through mediation and general attention being given to pages which need it. A group of “doctors” could be created which could grant user rights to view page health and/or be alerted to pages in need of mediation services. Page health could be viewable in chart form to assess change over time. One important aspect would be to assess whether or not mediation has a positive effect.
How would your measurement idea help your community make better decisions?
editAfter you are finished measuring or evaluating your Wikimedia project, how do you expect that information to be used to benefit the project?
I’ve sort of already answered this, but i’ll try to expand here. A numerical value for the general health of a page could be used to measure a number of different things. Pages with seemingly average health could be the result of lots of people giving 1 and 5 ratings, indicating contention. Care would need to be given in tabulating using bar charts etc to asses the number of people who deem the page to have poor health.
Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?
editDo you need people with specific skills to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? If you can’t implement this project, can you scale down your project so it is doable?
No, there’s no way I could implement this. I would be inretested to help develop the idea further with people who can though.

edit- I don't see any drawbacks, provided people understand what the "health" metric is for. It could be a really useful tool for organizers. 2ReinreB2 (talk) 01:13, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose I am at a loss to see how this would benefit wikipedia or any article within it. Probably would serve as a new source for conflict. MargaretRDonald (talk) 01:06, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose You are misunderstanding what is meant by WP Community health. --~~
- Support I think it is a nice way to measure the healthiness in discussion pages and to develop triggers when a talk page is getting many bad ratings. --~~
