Content

This program aims to reduce gaps in content on the Wikimedia projects through events, contests, and partnerships.


Objectives: Over the next 6 months:

  • Raise the awareness of the cultural institutions about their role with respect to free culture and knowledge. Nowadays we can perceive an improvement in the relationship between cultural institutions and free culture and free movement, but we want to survey our partners on the subject, both, before and after the collaboration between Wikimedia España and the GLAM institution, and the staff and also the direction and volunteers (in case there were).
  • Achievement of free materials by involving cultural institutions in the development of quality content, with 4,000 items released by 2 partners, and 200 items used in Wikimedia articles.
  • Increase the participation of editors by involving 70 new editors in content activities.
  • Generate a feeling of trust in Wikimedia among cultural institutions we work with by continuing effective collaborations with four institutions that involve 50 active editors, with three institutions agreeing when surveyed that Wikimedia is an effective partner and three institutions agreeing they are more confident in doing Wikimedia-related work after the collaboration than they were before the collaboration.
  • Increase the quality and quantity of Wikimedia content, with 4,100 media added (820 unique images used) and 1,270 articles improved or created through content activities.

Activities:

  • Organizing three contests both of articles and photography to get quality content.
  • Collaboration with six cultural institutions (GLAM) to get quality content and disseminate the values of Wikimedia movement. Our GLAM collaboration plan with includes the following activities: training sessions, about both Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, and for both the public and staff; donation of content such as images or documents; events as edit-a-thons; talks on the Wikimedia projects and free knowledge.
  • Organizing five edit-a-thons to attract eight new editors and improve content. In addition to Wikipedia and Commons, Wikisource will be edited.
  • Events coverage of about five events, especially sports (both outdoors and indoors), music festivals and other cultural and social events such as film festivals and public presentations. A person attends the event, generally with an official accreditation, takes photos and uploads them to Commons. We also plan create articles on Wikinews for each event.

Community

This program aims to build a decentralized structure, providing local groups with the means to organize Wikimedia activities in different locations throughout Spain. We want to make our local groups able to organize activities with the support of the national organization (Wikimedia Spain), rather than having the latter looking for local helpers for their activities. We also want to reach different language groups.


Objectives:

Over the next 6 months:

  • Develop the internal infrastructure of the chapter in order to increase our capacity to better support local groups.
  • Increase collaboration with local communities by partnering with 25 volunteers on seven different projects in seven different regions throughout Spain. Some events will probably involve additional regions, but we cannot be sure yet.
  • Increase membership from 99 to 130.
  • Increase diffusion and visibility of the chapter in society. Chapter diffusion in society can be measured through statistics: followers on social media like twitter or facebook, number of blog posts and visits to them and number of mentions in the press.

Activities:

  • Three members’ meetings to involve more volunteers in chapter work throughout the year.
  • Annual Assembly, organizing parallel activities.
  • Increasing membership through campaigns on social networks and during other activities.
  • Supporting local communities in the development of activities and programs. WMES experience running different kinds of events will be a great help. We will also assist with the inscription process, metrics, contacting Wikimedia Admins.
  • Communication: improving the visibility of the chapter’s activities through the new blog and website and offer merchandising in the events to facilitate the dissemination of the movement.

    WMES faces two different problems.
    1.- Activity growth. Museums, universities, public institutions of different sorts are demanding our presence and we are interested in going there. There are many advantages in our being involved with them, from liberating content to educating prospective editors. Most people call it GLAM but I think it is more than that as it involves reaching out to the general public in an industrial manner.
    2.- Providing resources to the volunteers. Sometimes we just don’t have the means we need. But even when we do have them, they are often where they are not needed. Matching needs with the existing stock of resources is key to WMES activities’ development. A large country and activities in many places mean that we need to coordinate who is able to go, who can bring the stuff, where the materials are and so on.
    In order to address two different kinds of problems, we need our employee will develope two different roles:
    1.- GLAM-related activities addressed to the demand side of the problem: who wants an activity, who offers an opportunity to liberate stuff, which universities can be interested and so on. So it goes beyond the usual galleries, libraries, archives and museums as it includes other institutions such as municipalities, universities, private companies and others.
    2.- Program coordination activities that facilitate available resources and people wherever they are needed. It is a coordinator that has to make sure that activities and resources are compatible.
  2. How long is this staff person or contractor's planned engagement with your organization, and how many hours will they work over the course of this grant?
    As per Convenio Colectivo del Sector Oficinas y Despachos de la Provincia de Valladolid the yearly number of working hours in 2016 will be 1,765 and there will be 23 working days of vacation which is about a whole month. The duration of the grant being six months, the number of working hours will be 882.5 and there will be 11.5 working days of vacation.
  3. Use a percentage of that person's total hours to show how they will spend their time on different programs and activities.
    30% GLAM, 20% education institutions, 15% events, 22% community, 13% administrative tasks.

CONTENT

  • Raise the awareness of the cultural institutions about their role with respect to free culture and knowledge. Nowadays we can perceive an improvement in the relationship between cultural institutions and free culture and free movement, but we want to survey our partners on the subject, both, before and after the collaboration between Wikimedia España and the GLAM institution, and the staff and also the direction and volunteers (in case there were).
  • In these three months we have maintained a close relationship with various GLAM institutions. GLAMing Madrid project opened the doors to collaboration with the network of state museums and it begins to offer its first results. Those first three museums that collaborated were very satisfied with the experience and have indicated their intention to continue working and carrying out activities; for example, in the National Archaeological Museum is planned to conduct more Wikipedia workshops for staff, as not all workers who were interested could attend the GLAMing workshops; the Museum of Romanticism has continued providing access to classical music concerts to record due to the success of previous experience, and want to organize more editing activities. The three of them also share the desire to upload more images to Wikimedia Commons.
    Apart from those first three museums, others have shown their willingness and interest in collaborating after holding the first meetings with them. Both the Museum of Lázaro Galdiano and González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts are interested in carry out, first, staff training and then organize activities for the public and improve the content on Wikipedia about their collections. Others, like National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, have been favorable to organize activities such Wiki Takes, open to the public, and improve the content and dissemination related to the museum and Cartagena.
    Other institutions, such library of Castile and Leon and Reina Sofía Library were already working with us and have maintained the intention to continue organizing activities, courses, workshops, etc. In fact, thanks to the library of Castile and Leon we have achieved contact with the network of public libraries of Castile and Leon about undertaking courses and activities for librarians. In the case of the Spanish Army, a first approach has shown its interest in disseminating content related to military history, in this case through the network of military museums in Spain.
    In the case of Joaquin Diaz Foundation, after an initial collaboration in 2013 with the upload to Wikimedia Commons of more than 2000 images, in 2015 we proceeded to upload over 21,000 audios. The success of the initiative was huge, with repercussions on the press, and its responsible was very satisfied with the work done by WMES volunteers.
  • Achievement of free materials by involving cultural institutions in the development of quality content, with 4,000 items released by 2 partners, and 200 items used in Wikimedia articles.
  • In these three months has not released any material from institutions. However there have been very important steps to release content from two institutions. On the one hand Joaquín Díaz Foundation; after the release of more than 21,000 audios, a fact which was presented at a press conference in March 22, the responsable is committed to continue the process of releasing content with other 20,000 more audios.
    On the other hand, the Department of Studies and Corporate Image of the Complutense University of Madrid showed its intention to release content to Wikimedia Commons, mainly images. They have a archive of about 80,000 photos of spaces, official events, academic events, schools... in addition to the historical archives of the university. They needed to consult with his superiors, consider what percentage of that archive can release, organizing work, but showed interest in spreading all or part of this material.
  • Increase the participation of editors by involving 70 new editors in content activities.
  • The number of new editors, thanks to content activities is 56; 32 from the Wikipedia courses at University of Valladolid, 1 from Mother Language Day, 8 from Women´s International Day Edit-a-thon, 8 from Open Education Weekipedia Edit-a-thon and 7 from Help us to change de number edit-a-thon.
  • Generate a feeling of trust in Wikimedia among cultural institutions we work with by continuing effective collaborations with four institutions that involve 50 active editors, with three institutions agreeing when surveyed that Wikimedia is an effective partner and three institutions agreeing they are more confident in doing Wikimedia-related work after the collaboration than they were before the collaboration.
  • In these three months several institutions that maintained a previous collaboration with us have developed activities. The edit-a-thon organized by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, on the occasion of Women's International Day, which was held at the National Museum of Science and Technology, involved 7 editors. The University of Valladolid is a collaborating institution since years ago; in these months three new Wikipedia courses were developed: the Reina Sofía Library involved 26 editors in two courses and La Yutera Library involved 6 editors. In total, the number of editors involved in activities with institutions which we collaborated with is 37.
    After accomplishment of GLAMing Madrid project, we have met several times with the three museums, in order to plan new activities in the future; also we offered them feedback on the impact of their images on the Wikimedia projects. The high number of images used in various projects, especially Wikipedia, as well as visits to articles in which are used, has confirmed the effectiveness of the diffusion of their contents through Wikimedia and maintain their intention to continue working in that direction. Regarding confidence in the projects after the collaboration, we think we have managed to increase that confidence; despite initial skepticism about the quality of the articles that would be created or improved, they have proven the high degree of participation of the users and the use of sources from the museums themselves as references, making it a useful and accurate content.

COMMUNITY

  • Develop the internal infrastructure of the chapter in order to increase our capacity to better support local groups.
  • In the last months we have experienced an increase of wikimeetings on a more or less regular basis in different cities of the Spanish geography, especially Madrid, Valencia, Zaragoza, Valladolid and Oviedo. Furthermore on March 21st was started the first wikipod dedicated to photography in Cordoba (OpenShot). Our strategy is also to search for new members from regions that have so far a low representation from a geographic point of view.
  • Increase collaboration with local communities by partnering with 25 volunteers on seven different projects in seven different regions throughout Spain. Some events will probably involve additional regions, but we cannot be sure yet.
  • This term we have been able to hold our largest gathering of Wikimedians, Wikipedia 15, in Valladolid, Zaragoza and Madrid. It has resulted fruitful in terms of membership and also in terms of collaboration among Wikimedians. From our group in Valladolid-Palencia area, we have supported activities in Ávila, Salamanca and the Portugal-Spain borderland.
    From our activities in Seville last December, an active group has appeared in Córdoba, with two others likely in Almería and Granada. A great improvement to our activities in Andalusia, that had been centered in Seville-Cádiz Bay area.
    Our project of pictures of municipalities is leading to an increasing collaboration among editors from Andalusia, Aragon, Castile and Leon and the Land of Valencia. They are stablishing their own ways to keep track of the job. Nine editors are very active, two of them in Aragon but working also in Northern Castile-La Mancha, Eastern Castile and Leon, and Navarre; another three are doing Castile and Leon, and there is are least one active in each the Land of Valencia, Northeastern Andalusia and Extremadura. This event extends well beyond the realm of Commons, as pictures have provided a great number of edits in Wikipedias in fifty languages and in Wikidata.
    The Mother Tongue contest succeded in getting edits in all eight languages in Spain. With this event we also managed to contact an editor in Extremaduran, something that we had been unable to do previously. Edits in Galician and Asturian have been very encouraging, and contributions in Catalan have been many and large, as usual. Editors in different languages helped to have the project pages translated.
    Art&Feminism edit-a-thon in València has allowed as to share the experience with Amical. We also shared with them Poetry Day contest. Both events have also been good chances to reduce gender gap. And both events have also added many new Q-items to Wikidata, as they were themed on very underrepresented groups.
    Poetry Day and Art&Feminism follow two different strategies. Poetry Day is focused on present editors and works by making them edit on line, needing little supervision: most of the time the very contestants are running -efficiently- the contest and asking for more job to do. Editions are big, quality is good and there are no problems with the community. On the other hand A+F is mainly in person, with many editors with little to no experience. They have to be cared and some problems with the community are unavoidable. The advantage of A+F is that it brings new editors and personal contact with people. In this case, we met people from the City Hall and also people related to libraries. We are taking advantage of such contacts to develope more activities, e.g. Wiki Takes Camí de Vera.
    In brief, we have done activities in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and Leon, Galicia, the Land of Valencia, Madrid, and Navarre. The number of people involved in each event goes from 9 to 17.
  • Increase membership from 99 to 130.
  • Data of March 31st: 25 female, 89 male = 114. Net increase: 15.
  • Increase diffusion and visibility of the chapter in society. Chapter diffusion in society can be measured through statistics: followers on social media like twitter or facebook, number of blog posts and visits to them and number of mentions in the press.
  • As of April 15, followers on social networks were 2849 in Twitter and 1235 in Facebook. The number of posts in this three months were 12, both in WMES and WMF blogs, and the number of visits to the blog 183 152. The mentions in the press include events like Wikipedia15, Comunica2 Congress, Women´s International Day and Wiki Loves Folk, counting 29 mentions. We have been interviewed by two main TV chains (La 1 and La Sexta).

OBJECTIVES

Over the next 6 months:

Raise the awareness of the cultural institutions about their role with respect to free culture and knowledge. Nowadays we can perceive an improvement in the relationship between cultural institutions and free culture and free movement, but we want to survey our partners on the subject, both, before and after the collaboration between Wikimedia España and the GLAM institution, and the staff and also the direction and volunteers (in case there were).

In these months the contact and collaboration with GLAM institutions has raised. The success of GLAMing Madrid project opened us the doors to collaboration with the network of state museums and it begins to offer its first results. The first three collaborating museums are very satisfied with the experience, especially with the statistics refered to the use and views of the images uploaded to Commons, and they have indicated their desire to continue carrying out activities; for example the National Archaeological Museum wants to organize more Wikipedia workshops for staff, because not all workers who were interested could attend the GLAMing workshops, and an edit-a-thon; the Museum of Romanticism has continued providing access to classical music concerts to record them, due to the success of previous experience, and wants to upload more images to Wikimedia Commons; and the Museo del Traje (Costume Museum) has a proposal to organize more Wikipedia workshops, focusing in some exhibitions of the Museum.

Others state museums have shown their willingness in collaborating after the first meetings with them. Both the Museum of Lázaro Galdiano and González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts are interested in carrying out staff training and organizing activities for the public and improve the content on Wikipedia about their collections. The second one presented us on June a plan of activities: training session, not only for the Museum but also for other cultural institutions in Valencia, and an edit-a-thon. Others museums, like National Sculpture Museum and National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, are favorable to participation in the Wikipedian in Residence initiative or organization of activities such as Wiki Takes and improvement of the content related to the museum and to Cartagena.

Libraries are the other GLAM institutions we have collaborated intensely with. The public library of Castile and Leon and Reina Sofía Library were already working with us (talks, courses) and have maintained the intention to continue organizing courses or workshops in the coming months. In fact, thanks to the library of Castile and Leon we have achieved contact with the network of public libraries of Castile and Leon about undertaking courses and activities for librarians. Another case of success is the collaboration with the network of public libraries of Asturias; after the Princess of Asturias awards ceremony, the librarians received a first Wikipedia course in Autumn and a second one in February. They were very interested in collaborating, hence in April they organized a weeklong edit-a-thon focused on in local topics and involving people and cultural institutions. After the event, they are satisfied and interested in continuing the collaboration, so they participated in another Wikipedia course in June.

In the case of the Spanish Army, a first approach has shown its interest in disseminating content related to military history, in this case through the network of military museums in Spain. Finally, the Joaquin Diaz Foundation, after an initial collaboration in 2013 with the upload to Wikimedia Commons of more than 2000 images, in 2015 we proceeded to upload over 21,000 audios. The success of the initiative was huge, with repercussions on the press, and its responsible was very satisfied with the work done by WMES volunteers and showed his intention to upload other 20,000 audio files.

Achievement of free materials by involving cultural institutions in the development of quality content, with 4,000 items released by 2 partners, and 200 items used in Wikimedia articles.

In these six months big quantities of material from institutions haven't been release. We must mention though the 24 audio and video files provided by the musicians who performance at the Museum of the Romanticism, collaboration that started thanks to GLAMing Madrid project, and those provided by the duo Tsacianiegas, in Asturian. They are all used in 19 Wikimedia articles, in 5 Wikipedias. The enthusiasm of the musicians from the Museum of Romanticism remains and they will continue recording audios.

However, we are on our way to release more content in the coming months. On the one hand, the responsable of Joaquín Díaz Foundation is committed to continue the process of releasing content with other 20,000 more audios. On the other hand, the Department of Studies and Corporate Image of the Complutense University of Madrid showed its intention to release content to Wikimedia Commons, mainly images, from an archive of about 80,000 photos of spaces, official events, academic events, schools... Also, after the good results obtained, the participating museums of GLAMing Madrid project show its intention to upload more images from their collections in the coming months.

Increase the participation of editors by involving 70 new editors in content activities.

The organization of the content activities has favored the participation of 301 new editors; 32 from the Wikipedia courses at University of Valladolid, 1 from Mother Language Day, 8 from Women´s International Day Edit-a-thon, 8 from Open Education Weekipedia Edit-a-thon, 7 from Help us to change de number edit-a-thon, 16 from Social Sciences and Humanities Edit-a-thon, 2 from Women from Almería and International Book Day 2016 Edit-a-thon, 3 from Design Edit-a-thon, 2 from the Wikimedia Pentathlon, 51 from Book Day Week in Asturias and 11 from the Wikipedia workshop in Salamanca, while 1 from Wiki Loves Folk, 5 from Places of the Spanish Civil War and 154 from Wiki Loves Earth.

Likewise, the collaborations with universities and other centers, where we support different educational projects, have added more new editors: 7 from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, 75 from Jaume I University, 44 from the University of Valencia, 15 from the University of Cádiz and 13 from San Pedro Apóstol School of Puerto de Sagunto.

In these months we have continued working with several cultural institutions. The edit-a-thon organized by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, on the occasion of Women's International Day, which was held at the National Museum of Science and Technology, involved 7 editors. The University of Valladolid has been a collaborating institution for years; in these months three new Wikipedia courses were developed: the Reina Sofía Library involved 26 editors in two courses and La Yutera Library involved 6 editors. The Design Edit-a-thon was coorganized together with the Madrid Designers' Association at the cultural space Matadero Madrid, with whom had already organized the Europeana Fashion Edit-a-thon en 2015. It involved 8 editors. In total, the number of editors involved in activities with institutions which we had collaborated with is 47. If we add the continuing collaborations with several universities, we get 7 editors from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, 75 from Jaume I University and 15 from the University of Cádiz, in total 97 editors.

After finishing the GLAMing Madrid project, we have met several times with the three museums, in order to plan new activities in the coming months. We offered them feedback on the impact of their images on the Wikimedia projects and the high number of images used in various projects, especially Wikipedia, as well as visits to articles in which they are used, has confirmed the effectiveness of the diffusion of their contents through Wikimedia and maintain their intention to continue working in that direction. Regarding confidence in the projects after the collaboration, we think we have managed to increase that confidence; despite initial skepticism about the quality of the articles that would be created or improved, they have proven the high degree of participation of the users and the use of sources from the museums themselves as references, making it a useful and accurate content.

Increase the quality and quantity of Wikimedia content, with 4,100 media added (820 unique images used) and 1,270 articles improved or created through content activities.

The total media uploaded between January and June is 9,571. These files come from events coverage (sports and concerts mainly), from Wiki Takes Camí de Vera, from the Spanish municipalities with no previous picture campaign, from the Ballot papers for the 2016 Spain general election campaign, from Wiki Loves contests, from Places of Spanish Civil War contest and from OpenShot Córdoba group. On July 25th, 1,109 (11.59%) are being used, with 2736 articles using an image. Total statistics can be consulted here. About articles improved or created, a total of 1543 were edited, adding 1,975,153 bytes. Also, we must add 24 audio and video files provided by the musicians of the Museum of Romanticismo.

COMMUNITY

OBJECTIVES Over the next 6 months:

Develop the internal infrastructure of the chapter in order to increase our capacity to better support local groups.

Within our commitment to supporting local groups, we have organize 7 wikimeetings in these six months, three of them as part of the same event (Wikipedia15), in several cities: Madrid, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Valencia and Astorga, with the assistance of members and supporters of the local community and, in some cases, volunteers from free software movement. The total number of participants has been 100 people.

On March 21st started the first wikipod dedicated to photography in Cordoba (OpenShot) and later, on June, started a new photographic group in León. More and more photographers are interested in Wikimedia projects so we think that will emerge more such groups throughout the Spanish geography.

Parallel to the increase in the number of members, we increase our presence in each region of Spain. In these months we have achieved the first member in the Canary Islands, a region where we had barely developed activities; he has initiated contact with other local volunteers and local institutions like museums, so in the coming months we´ll begin to develop activities there.

Increase collaboration with local communities by partnering with 25 volunteers on seven different projects in seven different regions throughout Spain. Some events will probably involve additional regions, but we cannot be sure yet.

For the first time we have an employee dedicated exclusively to coordinate the daily activity of WMES. This allows us, on the one hand, to increase and maintain contact with local communities, facing planning activities, and secondly the organization of activities in different parts of Spain, involving partners and volunteers. This has enabled, for example, holding 7 meetings, including our largest gathering of wikimedians, Wikipedia15, in Valladolid, Zaragoza and Madrid. It resulted fruitful in terms of membership and also in terms of collaboration among wikimedians. From our group in Valladolid-Palencia area, we have supported activities in Ávila and Salamanca.

From the awards ceremony held in Seville last December, an active group has started in Córdoba (OpenShot) and thanks to the edit-a-thons celebrated in Granada and Almería two more groups have appeared and are seeking to organize events or activities. So a great improvement of our presence in Andalusia, that had been centered in Seville-Cádiz Bay area until now. The Mother Tongue contest got editions in all eight languages in Spain. We managed to contact an editor in Extremaduran language, something that we had been unable to do previously; contributions in Galician and Asturian were very encouraging and contributions in Catalan were many and large, as usual. Editors in different languages helped to have the project pages translated.

Art&Feminism edit-a-thon and Poetry Day contest have allowed us to share the experience with Amical. Both events were good chances to reduce gender gap and added many new Q-items to Wikidata, as they were themed on very underrepresented groups. Help us to change the numbers edit-a-thon in La Coruña, focused in reduce gender gap, facilitated the participation of Galician volunteers and two more edit-a-thons were held in Madrid, participating the local commnunity.

Two more events were organized in Valencia, involving the local community, in Spanish and Catalan. The first, the Wiki Takes Camí de Vera, increasing the participation in Wikimedia Commons, and the second, the I Wikimedia Pentathlon, where participants edited in 5 Wikimedia projects in two languages.

The project of pictures of municipalities is leading to an increasing collaboration among editors from Andalusia, Aragon, Castile and Leon and the Land of Valencia. They are establishing their own ways to keep track of the job. Nine editors are very active, two of them in Aragon but working also in Northern Castile-La Mancha, Castile and Leon and Navarre; another three are doing Castile and Leon, and there is are least one active in each the Land of Valencia, Northeastern Andalusia and Extremadura. This event extends well beyond the realm of Commons, as pictures have provided a great number of edits in Wikipedias in fifty languages and in Wikidata.

In brief, we have organized physical events in 7 regions (Galicia, Asturias, Castile and Leon, Madrid, Land of Valencia, Andalusia and Aragon), involving participants in at least 12 different projects (several Wikipedias, Wikidata, Commons, Wikiquote, Wikivoyage), and with an approximate number of 101 volunteers.

Increase membership from 99 to 130.

Increase diffusion and visibility of the chapter in society. Chapter diffusion in society can be measured through statistics: followers on social media like twitter or facebook, number of blog posts and visits to them and number of mentions in the press.

On July 25th followers on social networks were 2947 in Twitter and 1274 in Facebook. The number of posts in this three months were 24, both in WMES and WMF blogs, and the number of visits to the blog were 227,968. The mentions in the press include events like Wikipedia15, Comunica2 Congress, Women´s International Day, Wiki Loves Folk, Wiki Loves Earth and Book Day Week, counting 59 mentions. Also, we did several attentions to press: 7 for TV, 8 for radio and 12 for newspapers.
