Gender gap India work plan

This is a draft work plan-cum-policy document for 2013-14 for the Gender gap project in India. It is open for discussion, expansion, revision, and improvement. Please place your comments and suggestions on the Discussion page. This page will be updated as the discussion progresses. This plan is common to English and Indic languages. If additional requirements for Indic languages come up, a separate section for them will be added. - Rohini (talk) 14:48, 22 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have used "women" as an umbrella term for all the genders included in Gender gap in order to maintain brevity. -- Rohini (talk) 06:34, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed outreach activities edit

Beginners’ workshop: For women who have a little or no experience in editing Wikipedia.

Targeted workshops (students of a particular institution, bloggers etc): According to research and my own experience and observations, some groups will yield better editor recruitment and retention than others. Women bloggers have the best known conversion rate to Wikipedia editors. Targeting women technologists, IT professionals and IT students, and women in social media can also be tried.

Workshop targetting students of Women's Studies: To be hosted at WS Centres at select educational institutions such as Advanced Centre for Women's Studies at TISS Mumbai, Women's Studies Centre at University of Pune, JNU Women's Studies Centre, and School of Women's Studies at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. - Tniranjana (talk) 09:14, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Tniranjana[reply]

Advanced workshops: From our own experience of the Workshop for Women held in Mumbai (November 2012), a basic workshop is inadequate. It is essential to sustain outreach efforts while there is still interest in attending a follow-up activity in order to ensure editor quality and retention.

Syllabus for advanced workshops for women edit

  • One or more edit-a-thons are conducted every year in March for Women's History Month and International Women's Day.
  • The 'Lilavati's Daughters' edit-a-thon is already underway in a few Indian languages. One needs to be scheduled for English Wikipedia. Further discussion here.
  • Rope in libraries, archives, and other institutions and organisations that could provide content for running online or offline edit-a-thons on topics of interest or importance to women. (Intersection of GLAM and Gender gap)

Institutional partnerships edit

Collaborate with women's colleges and departments of gender studies to hold outreach events, edit-a-thons, and editing contests. Suggest that they use their resources to expand, create, or translate women's biographies.

Evaluation edit

In order to gauge the impact and success of outreach activities, participants will be surveyed 2 to 3 months from the day(s) of the workshop. A questionnaire is available here. The questionnaire can be modified or expanded to include a gendered perspective.

How else would you suggest we evaluate the success and impact of our Gender gap activities?

Here is a program evaluation case study from two WikiWomen's edit-a-thons, one of which was held in the WikiWomen's History Month: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluations/WWHM

Women and gender issues task force edit

The aim of this task force of WikiProject India is to standardise and improve articles related to women and gender issues in India, as well as to create new articles. The task force lacks a volunteer coordinator and only 7 members have signed up since February 2012. Further discussion on the task force's Discussion page.

Gender gap strategy 2013: It has ideas and insights we could use to revise parts of this work plan. It recognises and addresses some of the challenges this plan is aimed at. E.g., "One-time events, edit-a-thons to recruit new editors...generally only 5-30 people come, they don't scale very well and few new women are retained after the event."
