Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Reading/Document symbols in external links

Document symbols in external links

  • Problem: External links that do not link to https pages currently show the same icon as links to e.g. pdf's, either in the reference section or in the external links section. The reader should be aware that clicking on the link will result in downloading a document or open a reader or other program, rather than evoke a webpage. Especially PDF's may be large files.
  • Proposed solution: implement CSS resembling the en-wiki. May include docs like Word and Excell.
  • Who would benefit: All readers

Discussion

  • @Wickey: Are you asking to have this implemented on nl.wikipedia? You need only to speak with one of the users at nl:Speciaal:Gebruikerslijst/interface-admin. It should be possible to make icons for Word and Excel docs, too, but only your local interface admins can implement this. Unless you are proposing this be changed on all wikis? The problem is valid for everyone on each wiki and the right icons do harm no one, so this simple solution should be implemented for all. I only see a benefit, so why would every wiki do the work that can be done once in Wikimedia? --Wickey (talk) 16:51, 12 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • phab:T298433 seems highly relevant. --Izno (talk) 20:43, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
