The only issue I see with allowing it to go through something like Google or Apple Pay is that I think Google might take a percentage of the money for themself. I could be wrong since I don't usually use stuff like this, but it's something I have heard of existing. Blaze Wolf (talk) 14:20, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't it also possible to donate through Amazon Pay, and I suppose Amazon Pay Gift Cards are available in Japanese convenience store, even to those without credit cards? Also, I have noticed that, after donation, in donor survey, there's a question asking which payment method is the more popular one in your country, or methods that you're more willing to donate your money via. I think it is up to WMF to interpret those result and decide which to be implemented? C933103 (talk) 22:27, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sazanamiya, thanks very much for the suggestion. The good news is that you can already donate from the apps. On Android there is a "Donate" option in the More menu on the Home/Explore page. On iOS it is "Support Wikipedia" in the Settings page.
@Peter: In the iOS app, tapping Support Wikipedia links me out to donate.wikimedia.org in Safari, where I could use my credit card. I think this wish is about allowing people to donate via an “in-app purchase”, to donate from funds they already have loaded on their Apple account? ⁓ Pelagic (talk) 23:41, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You might need some market research to determine whether the “In-App Purchases” annotation in the App Store would deter some users from downloading the app. Pelagic (talk) 00:23, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Update: if you have a supported device it is now possible to donate using Apple Pay in most countries (including Japan) through https://donate.wikimedia.org, and we'll also be including Apple Pay in upcoming fundraising banners. Google Pay is hopefully coming later this year as well. In-app payments remain something that we need to assess more. Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 17:37, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
