Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Categories/Showing sort keys on category page

Showing sort keys on category page

  • Problem: Because category trees aren't made by one person, things like sort keys may be inconsistent. From the category pages themselves it is often not obvious when the sort keys deviate.
  • Proposed solution: Show the sort key of every page in the category, maybe in brackets after the link to the page. Because most regular readers probably don't care about sort keys, this should be an opt-in (maybe through a gadget).
  • Who would benefit: Wikimedians who categorise.

Discussion

  • This seems like a cool idea, but I think category pages would probably be overwhelming if it were on by default. --Izno (talk) 22:58, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, it certainly should be opt-in. Jochem van Hees (talk) 23:23, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • This could help in maintenance categories populated by templates or modules where the sort key could contain more detailed information about why an article is in the category. --Dipsacus fullonum (talk) 13:30, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • It is not the right place, but for persons sort keys should be given via wikidata to harmonize sorting in all projects in languages--Oursana (talk) 16:10, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • The rules for sorting is different in different languages, so it cannot be harmonized. And person names can even often be spelled or transcribed different in different languages. --Dipsacus fullonum (talk) 22:18, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Looks like an idea for gadget, not a MediaWiki proposal. Facenapalm (talk) 15:06, 11 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
