Noting block of 51.9.92.52

/16 range block on North Carolina's entire educational system
User:JamesBWatson at the English Wikipedia has taken it upon himself to block the entire (or gigantic portion of the) educational network in the US State of North Carolina for three months. This is not the first time this range has been blocked; it was previously blocked for six years by the same admin, and for three months by Materialscientist. If this were discovered by the press, this could be used in all sorts of ways to attack the educational system of North Carolina or political leaders in that state, because Wikipedia is essentially saying "your entire state's educational system is nothing but a bunch of thugs with nothing useful to contribute." It could also be used by comedians to make fun of North Carolina or the US South. I find it irresponsible that the blocking administrators didn't notify the communications committee already. Just in case
I blocked a user account going by the name Center for Regulatory Effectiveness ([1]), which according to google is a US Congress organization. I do not have the ability to look at ISP addresses, but just to be safe I want to report this here in the event that the account has an ISP address going back to a US Government group. Spammers
Where / to whom can I report comment spammers on the official Wikimedia blog so as to have them removed? Thanks. DS (talk) 01:41, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
- @DragonflySixtyseven: Sorry for the delay. The blog team usually handles these. Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 14:03, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
Current sensitive IP's list
ComCom - do you have a master list of current "sensitive IP's"? On enwiki we appear to have fragmented to multiple lists (see w:en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#51.171.156.10). — xaosflux Talk 01:14, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
- Is this page being monitored? — xaosflux Talk 18:53, 12 July 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Xaosflux: Thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the delay. I'm Sam from the Communications team at the Foundation, and I also serve as one of the list admins for ComCom. As far as I know, ComCom does not have a master list of current sensitive IP's beyond the information that is presented on this meta page. I'm speaking with a couple other folks to confirm, will get back to you soon once I have more information. Thanks. SLien (WMF) (talk) 00:48, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you, see also w:en:User_talk:Mdennis_(WMF)#Sensitive_IP_Addresses (feel free to continue this conversation there) and w:en:Wikipedia:Blocking_IP_addresses#Sensitive_IP_addresses. My suggestion is that if WMF wants to enforce this notification as a policy for local projects, they should take ownership of the criteria (the list to match). — xaosflux Talk 01:08, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the additional context. I spoke with a couple folks at the Foundation and confirmed we don't currently have a master list. I'm also chatting with a few other folks within my team to determine the best way to structure tracking/notifications of sensitive IP blocks for ComCom moving forward. Will keep you posted on the those conversations and share updates as soon as I have more information. SLien (WMF) (talk) 01:59, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- SLien (WMF) any update? — xaosflux Talk 00:25, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
- Xaosflux, I posted a reply here to consolidate the conversation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Mdennis_(WMF)#Sensitive_IP_Addresses. Thanks. SLien (WMF) (talk) 17:24, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
