Description - "Wiki loves SDGs 2020" is a one-week long online edit-a-thon to improve content about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and all their topic articles. The event will take place during Global Goals Week which is a week of action and commitments to achieve the Global Goals in September of each year. We are planning to encourage and tutor new Wikipedians from all over the world, particularly from developing countries, to dive into Wikipedia editing on a topic that they feel passionate about: the Sustainable Development Goals. With this event, we plan to raise awareness of the Goals amongst new audiences, strengthen the overall Global Goals movement and lay the foundations for more in-depth SDG related contents on Wikipedia after this event.

As you can see in the calander there are several English banners planned for September, including a fundraising banner and the global WLM banner. Did you reach out to the other organisers to coordinate the banners? Ciell (talk) 13:14, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ciell, I did look at the calendar but didn't notice an overlapping other banner. Now that you have pointed them out, I can see them though (I had only looked for that particular week; the other two banners are for longer periods that's how I overlooked them). I guess they will automatically take precedence over my proposed banner as those other two are bigger. Is there anything I can do nevertheless? Well, I'll message those two. EMsmile (talk) 13:20, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ciell, I took another look: I could avoid overlap if I go for all the countries that they didn't list. They have the big English speaking countries (for the Fundraiser) and a select list of countries for WLM. I could go for all the remaining countries, would that work? I am anyway interested in people from developing countries, so that might be OK.EMsmile (talk) 13:22, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As you can read here there are a lot of options we have on setting the different banners, number of times they are shown for example. If you do not have any preference, the CN admin will make this decision for you. Ciell (talk) 13:24, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great if an admin could help me out on this. I have never done a central notice request before... I don't even know what I should ask the other organisers (WLM and Fundraiser) - you said I should coordinate with them but what does that mean? I think they would have priority but perhaps this smaller campaign banner can fit in whereever there is space. The online edit-a-thon is taking place the entire week of Global Goals Week.EMsmile (talk) 13:34, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @EMsmile:, as you can see here I asked Romaine somewhat the same question. If they haven't started a conversation with you yet, please contact them. Either through their talkpage or e-mail is easiest I guess. Romaine is a CN admin as well, they should be able to explain the possibilities to you. Ciell (talk) 20:21, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ciell, I have messaged Romaine now. Thanks for the tip. Only 3 weeks to go until the proposed start date of our campaign/banner... EMsmile (talk) 02:58, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @EMsmile:, in the meantime: is the English community okay with yet another global banner? Could you please share a link to a place where this was discussed? The English community sometimes is a bit hesitant to allow another banner, therefore it would be good in inform the community and seek concensus. Ciell (talk) 13:56, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ciell, I'd love to know but I don't know how/where I can discuss it with the English community? Romaine hasn't responded yet (maybe on holidays). Where do you suggest I try to discuss it? I thought the place for discussion was here? (sorry, I am such a complete beginner in this respect). EMsmile (talk) 14:13, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the time these kind of things are discussed in the Village Pump. Are you an editor on the English Wikipedia?
Romaine is not on holiday, but rather very busy organising WLM at the moment, since that started yesterday. Ciell (talk) 14:27, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, Ciell, sorry, I didn't see your reply until now. Yes, I am an editor on the English Wikipedia. OK, I have posted on village pump here (hopefully I chose the right place). Let's see what the community says... EMsmile (talk) 11:16, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Ciell, just an update: we have had a bit of a discussion about the proposal here. What's your feeling, in which direction is it going? I think if we limit the number of countries to developing countries and if we change the title of the banner (Long version plus short version as some people don't like the "Wiki loves" part), then I think there is a certain degree of support, or? EMsmile (talk) 05:07, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's great how you're handling the discussion, thank you for that. You are requesting logged in and anonymous user targetting. The latter we only do if *really* useful, and for joining in the competition you expect people to create an account... Have you read CentralNotice/Usage guidelines?
Also, [1] is unavailable, or is this just because I'm in Europe? Ciell (talk) 21:37, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The link to the Project Everyone website does work today (but I have had cases in the past where it briefly didn't work for me either, it's strange). Sometimes I've had to click on the link twice. This is the website that Project Everyone runs, it's more reliable: Global Goals. I've read the usage guidelines but haven't understood all the nuances (my bad). I am happy to go with whatever is feasible. It's OK if you say "anonymous user targetting" is not valid for this - could we do just "logged in targeting" in that case? And yes, people can only contribute meaningfully if they create an account. We are using the Event Dashboard to log the editors and their outputs here. EMsmile (talk) 06:10, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@EMsmile: So I'll be setting up the banner shortly: you are sure you just want it to be in English, even though you are targetting countries where this is just one of the official languages, right? Could you give me the banner text you agreed upon with the English community? Ciell (talk) 13:38, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Oh, wonderful! I think the banner text would be this: "Join us for "Wiki loves SDGs" during 19-26 September: Wikipedians meet online to improve articles related to the Sustainable Development Goals". And link to here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Online_edit-a-thon_SDGs_September_2020. I've asked again the community on Village Pump if they agree to this new title (short + long version in the banner). Not sure if you want to wait a couple of days for further reactions, or just created the banner now (it's probably easy to change a word here or there if needed later). Romaine sent me a message saying: "If you want to have the WLM (September) countries excluded, you can ask such to be done by the CentralNotice admin. He/she should be able to determine that, otherwise I am happy to provide a list of the countries that have WLM in September". You know how to do the country list / country exclusion list? EMsmile (talk) 08:18, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@EMsmile: Changing the text is easy, so please give suggestions, and I would like you to look at an example before it goes live. It should be okay on all devices, but since I work on a laptop, and people around the world tend to look at Wikipedia on i-Phones, tablets, i-Pads, androids and what have you not, it's good to check as many devices as possible.
I've set the sequence to show the banner 10 times every day for the requested period, logged in only per our discussion.
You requested Dominica to be targetted: you don't want the Dominican Republic as well? Ciell (talk) 18:23, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
How does this look to you? Ciell (talk) 19:26, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell:: What should I be seeing on the link that you sent? Should there be a banner? If so, it doesn't show up. Maybe that's because I am located in Australia? About the countries, yes, Dominican Republic as well. Any country where it doesn't clash with an existing banner; and in particular as many developing countries as possible. Thanks a lot. EMsmile (talk) 04:20, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Let me ask @Martin Urbanec: This happened to me before: the requester should be able to see the planned banner through the preview-link, right? Am I doing something wrong here? Ciell (talk) 07:44, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @Ciell, thanks for the ping! It's really nothing strange (but it may look so!). The issue is there are two types of a preview here:
  • Live preview
  • Preview
The first one is available in the live preview section, right above the place for editing (and under settings). Its purpose is to facilitate banner development: You can easily make changes, and see that instantly in an existing page. This relies at the (unsaved) content in the textfield in your own computer - and that's why it doesn't work for outsiders. From an URL, you can spot that easily: it has preview=1 in it.
The second one previews whatever is currently saved in the banner's page. It allows for sanity checks, and it is the link you should send to requestors. You can see that at the top of the admin interface, called "Preview last saved version".
Hope this helps, Martin Urbanec (talk) 01:05, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thank you Martin! Ciell (talk) 09:56, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Very strange... while I file a bug report, does this one work for you? Ciell (talk) 18:48, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, that's the correct one :-). Martin Urbanec (talk) 01:06, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Now I can see it. Looks good to me, thanks! I have asked again in Village Pump and also in the Telegram group "Wikimedians for Sustainable Development" for quick feedback. If comments come back, I'll pass them on. From my side, the only suggestion I'd have is to increase the vertical distance a bit between the first row and second row of text. EMsmile (talk) 04:18, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The distances we have by default should fit all different browsers and devices. I am reluctant to change these settings, because of the chance that the banner will not display correctly, or even disturb the whole display of the Wikipedia-page. I'd rather leave that as is, if you don't mind. I can simple change the wording, picture and landing page. Ciell (talk) 09:56, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, sure, I hadn't thought about that, sorry. So far everyone that I have shown it to likes it! EMsmile (talk) 11:11, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I switched it on: first banners will be on display midnight UTC. Ciell (talk) 11:21, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wonderful, thank you for all your help! If someone asks me on which countries exactly it's displayed, where do I find the final list? Here in the calendar it still says "global" which is not quite right: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CentralNotice/Calendar EMsmile (talk) 13:57, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@EMsmile: You're welcome. I've taken the list you composed on the English Wikipedia, + the Dominican Republic. Ciell (talk) 16:31, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

While the banner is up edit

@Ciell:, sorry to bother you again. My co-workers in Kenya and Nigeria did see the banner on Sunday but today my co-workers are telling me that the banner is no longer visible in either Kenya or Nigeria anymore. Could you please check as we had agreed that it would be up for a week, until 26 September. Thanks. EMsmile (talk) 13:52, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @EMsmile:, I've set the campaign with a diet (as this season is always very full with CN banners). After the user has seen it, it will disappear for one day, and pop back up again. Ciell (talk) 17:59, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks for this clarification. EMsmile (talk) 04:57, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure if this "diet" thing works properly, Ciell. Several volunteers from various countries told me they saw it only once and then never again. Could you maybe remove that diet thing now? It's only up until 26 September anyhow that the banner will be up. And those countries that we chose don't have a competing banner displayed. Thanks in advance. EMsmile (talk) 14:26, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@EMsmile: Strange! I've switched it off now, and the banner should be on all the time in all requested countries (but please allow a few hours for the cache to clear, and have people that don't see the banner do a hard refresh of their browser first.)
