Grants:Project/Rapid/Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon for WHYY's Fresh Air with Terry Gross Archives/Report

Report accepted
This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2016-17 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? WHYY held a successful Wikipedia edit-a-thon on October 6, 2016. Overall our event had about 60 people attend. A total of 18 people (16 in person and 2 remote) edited the Wikipedia pages of culturally notable figures who have appeared on our award-winning, national radio program Fresh Air with Terry Gross. 17 articles were edited and 1 new article was created, meeting our goal of adding and improving content.

Many of the editors were new, meeting our goal to recruit new editors. Given that most were new, the average of 1 article per attendee was quite reasonable. Most new editors made a few edits in their sandbox or possibly tried to edit a single real page. The majority of edits on active Wikipedia pages were made by experienced editors.

Also 3 new photos were uploaded and an item was added to Wikipedia for the new article.

Event photos and details are tracked here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Philadelphia/Fresh_Air_Archive_2016

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
1 event 1 event WHYY held a successful Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon on October 6, 2016.
50 participants 50 participants WHYY had a goal of 50 participants for the entire event which included the edit-a-thon. We had 18 participants participate in the edit-a-thon.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well? The event went very well and was successful at engaging new editors.
  • What did not work so well? We would like to engage more people in the editing of Wikipedia in the future. We had a total of 18 people for this first event and hope to partner with a library in WHYY's service region in order to engage more people in our next event.
  • What would you do differently next time? We would like to extend the time to more than 90 minutes when we plan the next editathon. This will give new editors more time to learn and familiarize with the editing process. In addition, WHYY will partner with one or more libraries and/or a universities to ensure a larger participation in the edit-a-ton. We hope that Wikimedia Foundation will allow us to hold another Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon for Fresh Air in the coming year with the remaining grant funds.

Finances edit

Grant funds spent edit

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on. $438.96 was spent on grant venue costs (engineering $170, security $167.50, cleaning fees $101.46) and $267.97 was spent on event food and beverage costs.

Remaining funds edit

Do you have any remaining grant funds? We currently have $593.07 remaining.

WHYY sees the great value in engaging the community in editing the Wikipedia pages of culturally notable figures who have appeared on our award-winning, national radio program Fresh Air with Terry Gross. We would like to use the remaining funds to hold another Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon for Fresh Air early in 2017. We would like to partner with a library and/or a university on this next event to ensure larger participation numbers in the actual edit-a-thon.

Anything else edit

Anything else you want to share about your project? WHYY would like to thank Wikimedia Foundation for supporting this Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon event. The event helped us to inform WHYY members and supporters and archivists around the region about the Fresh Air Archive initiative during Philadelphia's Archives Month.

Here are examples of media outreach that helped WHYY to promote the event:
