Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
WHYY will hold one edit-a-thon for WHYY's Fresh Air with Terry Gross Archives on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 4:00-5:30 pm at the WHYY studios in Philadelphia, PA where Fresh Air with Terry Gross is produced.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
We have set up a Wikipedia sign-up page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Philadelphia/Fresh_Air_Archive_2016#Participants_-_Sign_Up_Here.21

We will be sending out an email blast to WHYY donors as well as targeted lists including Drexel University library science department contacts, PASCAL contacts, and Archives Month Philly contacts.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
Yes, Alex Stinson of Wikimedia connected us with local Wikipedia editors in Philadelphia. Mary Ockerbloom, Doreva Belfiore, Pete Edman and Mark Mandel will be helping us with the event. They are all experienced Wikipedia editors.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
The participants will bring their own laptops to the event. Mary Ockerbloom, Doreva Belfiore, Pete Edman and Mark Mandel are experienced Wikipedia editors and they will be coaching and training the participants to contribute high quality content. We have also included training modules from wiki education foundation in our Wiki meetup page. We have also identified the existing biographies of notable figures whose wikipedia pages can be enhanced or created.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
After the event WHYY will continue to provide opportunities for participants to assist in editing the Wikipedia pages of culturally notable figures who have appeared on our award-winning, national radio program Fresh Air with Terry Gross.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
Background on the Fresh Air archive project:

For more than 30 years, Fresh Air with Terry Gross has consistently been one of public radio's most popular programs. Each week, millions of people listen to the show's insightful conversations with the leading voices in contemporary arts and issues. The program reaches a global audience, with over 620 public radio stations broadcasting Fresh Air, and 3 million podcast downloads each week.

In 2015 January, WHYY received a grant from the Council of Library and Information Resources (CLIR) to enhance the metadata of 8,000 Fresh Air shows that aired between 1976 through 2015, and to make those shows available for research and scholarship through Worldcat.

The FA archives project team, in collaboration with partners at Drexel University and TelVue Corporation, has created a metadata application profile based on PBcore 2.0 schema and designed an asset management system that will store the entire Fresh Air collection in a single location with a logical structure. We are currently exporting the database records to WorldCat for public access, with direct links to the audio files.

The Fresh Air CLIR project lays the groundwork for creating new tools and opportunities for the public to explore and interact with the entirety of the Fresh Air archives. We not only envision our audience listening to the end results, but actively helping us enhance the way the archive can be discovered and shared with new audiences. Enhancing the archive through metadata ensures it will be preserved, accessible, and listened to for decades to come

Impact edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

Our aim for the event is to:

  • Empower community members and the general public to learn how to edit Wikipedia.
  • Create or enhance existing biographies of culturally notable figures who have appeared as a guest on Fresh Air with Terry Gross. The pages will be created or enhanced based on both published material and original primary source materials.
  • Increase access to the Fresh Air archives .
  • Add authoritative references, citations, and images to improve the quality of existing articles of all types.

The experienced editors of wikipedia will be helping us to make sure that we meet our goal and the participants contribute high quality content to Wikipedia.

Our numeric target for this October 6th event is 50 people for the entire event which includes the Edit-a-Thon and informational program about the Fresh Air archives.

Resources edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

WHYY has the event speakers, the experienced edit-a-thon leader and equipment for this event.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount. WHYY needs:

  • $600 to cover event venue costs of security, cleaning and engineering. WHYY wants to hold the event at the WHYY studios in Philadelphia where Fresh Air with Terry Gross is produced. The cost of the venue is of course in-kind. These costs of security, cleaning, and engineering represent out-of-pocket costs that WHYY must pay to outside vendors for the event.
  • $700 to cover food and beverage costs for event participants
